In the process of looking for reference images of the MRZR, I ran across tons of related images for Technicals, so I figured I'd give it a shot.
Big Red Big Red is a Remco pickup truck my youngest brother got back in the 80's, during his and every other little kid's obsession with Monster Trucks. All three of us held onto most of our toys and when my son was born, I ended with a lot of their old toys and Big Red was among them. The roof disappeared decades ago, so I used screen and wire mesh to replace the windshield. I drilled two holes into the wench spool, so I could wrap wire around it for a more realistic cable. The hook is a jewelry clasp. Added detail to the grill with a silver Sharpie. I took it apart and cut out the plastic floor board to allow space for figs to sit. The remaining stickers were removed and the 30+ years of gooey-grimy-glue was stubbornly cleaned off. I went over the bright yellow shocks with Silver and black Sharpies. Then I went over the entire truck with a couple of acrylic washes, to give it a dusty look. After it dried, I went back and painted in spots of heavier, built up dirt in some of the crevices and low areas. I was going for something like a Bofors or recoilless rifle for Big Red's cannon. I hate those giant missile launchers Hasbro seemed to love including with figures in the 90's, but they can be extremely useful in customs. Bullet-Proof's missile launcher was used for this cannon. The top barrel and arm bar were cut off, then it was flipped upside down. A dried out Sharpie and Crayola marker were cut into pieces and used to extend the barrel, make the back blast funnel, the post, base and pintle. The weapon bracket and truck bed adapter are made out of Sintra and the weapon can rotate 360 degrees. Unfortunately my measurement was off and the ability to depress/elevate is not even noticeable. But I'm fine with it. The whole thing can be removed so Big Red can haul troops or supplies. 4" figs can fit in the cab but it's a bit of a fuss getting them in and out due to their longer legs. 3.75" figs slide in pretty well but they seem close together as the truck is a bit narrow. There is space in the bed to realistically carry two figs when the weapon is installed and probably 6, maybe 8 with an empty bed. 1986 REMCO Blown Away 4x4 Pickup 1992 Bullet-Proof missile launcher Swiss Cheese This Schleich truck was a find at Tractor Supply. I had never heard of the company until I saw the display in the store. Originally I was only going to paint the interior because I didn't like the green color, but it looks so similar to a Toyota Land Cruiser which runs neck-and-neck with the Hilux as a base vic for technicals, I couldn't resist. Took it apart and drilled holes to stick transparent Legos in to make headlights. The turn signals and taillights were just cut/sanded into shape and glued on. Openings were cut into the kick panels to make room for figs with legs longer than the figure that came with the set. Using a pin drill, I decorated the body with bullet holes and dents and used a box cutter to cut deep scratches into the body and cut away chips. I painted parts of the engine to break up the solid grey mass and add detail. Then a light black wash was applied over the entire truck to add depth to the crevices, holes, dents and scratches. Using a Molotow chrome pen, I added "mirrors" to the side views and in some of the larger holes, deeper dents, and scratches added exposed metal details. Using different brown paint mixes, I went over the truck with a few washes to layer the dirt into the crevices and build up the dust, across the truck. The wheels and tires were touched up with thicker paint, removed with a damp brush after drying, to give them a mud-stained look. I liked the idea of the FLAK cannon in the Swiss Cheese as it has great details that give it the look of an older weapon, similar to the images of worn anti-aircraft guns in the backs of Technicals that I saw. I got one dirt cheap from a parts lot that was missing the base, chair and one control handle. I cut the other handle off to match the other side and using the hand-hold bar off of the Razor, I made control sticks. Holes were drilled into the control arm, the new handles were pushed through and glued in. I soaked a strip of gauze in a mix of blue and grey acrylic, then glued it on as a cushion to cover the plate where the original seat would have mounted. Since the base was missing, I made the truck bed adapter with a track on it that the FLAK wrests on, balanced by the guns locking pegs. The bed adapter was scarred and painted black and both it and the FLAK were covered in sand washes. Even with the openings cut into the kick panels, it is still a bit of a snug fit for a lot of figs in the cab... 4" figs ain't happening. The headroom is tight so figs with thicker plastic will sit taller and have issue with the ceiling. But it is pretty wide so the figs will not be on top off each other. There is only room for the weapon, the fig manning it and small accessories when the FLAK is in the bed. It could probably seat about 8 figs empty. I love both of these. Swiss cheese is both cool and hilarious.
