Did the Japanese actually fight with katanas, or were they worn primarily for social distinction purposes (and used for beheading civilians and prisoners)?
I was thinking that a katana isn't really practical for clearing brush, while a golok (like the Brits are issued), a kukri, or heck - a Brazilian jaguar-pommeled knife (https://pt.slideshare.net/douglasrbs...uerra-na-selva - though that seems more like something Claymore would have), would be good for that practical task. And while they wouldn't be quite as deadly as a katana, in SE's hands they'd still be a nasty close quarters weapon. But it was just an idle musing. I look forward to seeing the companion pieces! |

Ooh, a subject I can actually give a reasonably well-educated and in depth reply to. A bit busy right now, I found a killer dollhouse at the thrift store. Cleaning it up, and getting it ready for primer, etc. Gonna be time to build a cobra castle. (I think it's the same one as another HT'er made into a castle destro 7 or 8 years back.) Anyhow, for a quick answer, LT... The Japanese did use swords in combat throughout antiquity, and well into the 20th century. Eventually having them as side arms or just symbolic representation of Bushido spirit. If I can get the time for it today, I'll lay some info down for a lesson. |
