So here's shelf #2, upper right (sans Serpentor, only 12 fit well on this shelf), set up in my "photobox":
Troop Builders--from 1985 and 1986 with some 1987 sprinkled in--representing a decided break from the nameless blueshirts from years before. I took a few weeks to try to clean them up for a good photo shoot. Nothing too significant I'll admit--a few part swaps, medium repainting. A lot of time trying to fix a lot of restricted movement in knees. Almost all these figures had knee problems I didn't really notice before, and didn't encounter in many of my previous sets. Also, a lot of skinny legs in these figures--may switch out down the road... A few unobstructed closeups, mostly taken for height checking and photo-archiving my collection: 1985 pt1: Ice Viper: switched out for POC Firefly head (cuz cloth masks are so pre-1985); shaved helmet brow a bit for better google fit; Tomax feet repainted to shorten him up a bit. Snow Serpent: Whiter paint on furry bits and goggles. Still feels like his suit should be darker (something for the future). Crimson Guard: Left knee still looks messed up, but leg can stand straight; Retaliation version head, helmet brow trimmed to help it look less squashed down (a leap of faith right there); belt from Gen. Hawk (helps to cover up that skinny torso); repainted Citadel Khorne Red to smooth out discoloration. Also--sword! 1985 pt2: Lamprey: Upper body and arms from Dollar General Cobra Trooper (original too short); lower legs from Shockblast for ankle knife (why didn't Hasbro do this in the 1st place?); painted inside of face visor; repainted Citadel Leadbelcher for shininess. Eel: softer 50th shoulder armor, glued down down for more compact fit; repainted grey areas Citadel Leadbelcher to match his better match his ride. Televiper: lower arms from ebay (?? get 'em while they're hot); lower legs from POC Beachhead (better match to vintage); upper legs from Shockblast (POC Beachhead upper legs too short, unfortunately-but kept the radio thingee). Citadel Kantor Blue and Tamiya Purple. May try a ROC Pit Trooper vest in the future... 1986 portion coming soon...Thanks for viewing! |

The rest of shelf #2: 1986 Contingency
Strato-Viper (Air-Viper): lower arms from 50th Cobra Eel Air-Viper (A.V.A.C): upper arms & hands from ROC ToysRUs Firefly, parachute back from DVD Cobra Paratrooper (painted black) Motor-Viper (Nitro-Viper): upper arms & hands from ROC ToysRUs Firefly, upper legs from Wild Weasel Cobra Viper, Cobra B.A.T., Techno-Viper: no changes, except touch-up paint (sorry!) Serpentor: v1 (carded version) with v3 (DVD version) helmet and chest accessory, body and helmet painted Citadel Balthasar Gold, ironed folds into cape for better drape down, necks snakes glued down Obligatory Group Shot: SOME NOTES: -The only vintage version of these figures I had was Serpentor, which I never really liked. But I couldn't pass up on these modern versions of the classic Cobra Troopers. -Yeah, Techno-Viper and Ice-Viper were post '85, '86--but I need my 13, and these two not only fit the color schemes and M.O. of the group--they were well done in the later years of the modern era. -one more shelf to go, but Dreadnoks still not photo ready (mainly Gnaw needs a new necklace and new jeans) -Happy 10th anniversary of the 25th Anniversary line! (?) -Happy new year to all!

Once again, these are just incredible! I love the subtle fixes/customs that you've done to each figure.
The lower arms on the Tele-Viper look like they came from Kwinn. Jason |

Also, your Serpentor is exactly what Serpentor should look like! Matter of fact, I lucked out some months back and bought a custom Serpentor off ebay that was this same recipe! Planning on doing a little touch up paint to mine as soon as vortiouscustoms ever ships my order - he's got this cool Serpentor helmet that is flared out.

My Dreadnok shelf figures are still being worked on. But I think my cleanups on the first half are good enough for now.
So below are my latest "Cobra Yearbook Group Shots", before they all get reshuffled to their final shelves: Cobra 1985 (w/ Bonus Copperhead, Moray Pilot): Notes: -Ripper's lower arms and hands are from Bazooka. Need to switch out the hands for a smaller pair in the future, when I've got the patience and time to find the right match, and do a complete uniform skin repaint on the whole figure. -Torch entire body minus feet are from Slaughter's Marauder's Spirit, repainted, head reset with gun glue trick. Brings him closer in height to his mates. -Snow Serpent got a darker shade of grey (to get some more color separation from the furry bits) -Televiper's visor repainted with the awesome Molotow Liquid Chrome Paint Marker. Gonna repaint all my Cobra silver visors with this thing! Cobra 1986: Notes: -MotorViper and StratoViper's visors got all chromed out (skipped on BAT, waiting for a smaller tip marker) -Zandar and Zarana get matching pink repaints, which ended up being close to Zarana's original shade. -Monkeywrench: original GungHo body with sculpted thicker neck, Serpentor lower arms, head from a Men in Black figure. Honestly, this guy still needs rework: I hope to have an update when the whole Dreadnok shelf set is complete. -Thrasher: belt from Copperhead (swiped from Mandingo Rex's custom from way back), reworked eyebrows -Potential Bonus figures: the lost Air Viper (tweak of 50th AVAC), Cobra Viper Officer (tweak of 50th Anniv 3 pack release) |

So the lower arms, I got from ebay, from a China seller. The item was titled "Falcon torso with arms BROKEN FIGURE", but did some research on youjoe and they look like they are from the FSS Pathfinder. I bought a bunch a few months ago as cheap replacement arms//upgraded hands on some early bare armed 25th figures (Wetsuit, Buzzer, Televiper, RockNRoll, etc). The seller has 6 left at this time, at a much higher BIN markup than was previously available.

Whoa! Don't know where I was the last two months that I missed these, but wow! I love seeing these takes on the original Cobra characters! The fixes make the figures so much better! Some of my favorites are (in no particular order) Scrap-Iron, Dr. Mindbender, Serpentor, and Torch... They all look great though, even with the minor tweaks, like Tomax and Xamot's flesh being repainted (it brings out detail in the sculpts!). Thanks for sharing these, bro!

nice job on the painting touch-ups. What color/paint are you using for the flesh tone? I'm having a terrible time with my paint matching. Thanks!
