Nice looking collection of Cobra baddies! The mods you've made on your figures are subtle, but make them look so much better, even just repainting the details on some has really improved them. Favorites include your Scrap-Iron, Dr. Mindbender and the dark blue Hooded Cobra Commander! Also, the photography is superb, showing the brilliant colors and details in each of your figures. Keep up the great work, which is always fun to look through.

Mindbender rocks that new cape! It’s certainly more majestic than the previous. Way to hold out sharing until he was right. I like the details with the Cobra emblems and chain at the top of the cape to make it really tie in with the webgear. And you did right to add the purple gauntlets too. Nice work!

Really dig that baroness head. Been wanting to get one. Did I understand right that this head was from a first batch and the second batch was a bit different? I noticed it went out of stock or something and then relisted so the current ones might be a third batch. I wonder what differences there may from the one you have pictured.

HHFF?s Cobra Shelf, Top Set 2021 Final Update:
First, flashback to Thansgiving 2017: group shot, in the archival style that I started with that year (my HissTank freshman year), and still use generally for 9-13 figure sets. The Cobra Characters/Agents, 1982-1984 were my thing as a kid, with the Twins and the Doctor rounding out for a 13-figure set/display. Below was taken back then on a Samsung S5 phone, waiting for the right daylight hit the room: gCobra_25th_86-84_HighCommand_2017-1119a by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr Now, to Christmas 2021, four phone generations later (yep, still too stubborn to buy a dedicated fancy camera), with a few updates to some figures--not too many overhauls, but enough to replace the shot above for my group photo archives. Note: Figure positions were all flipped to accommodate Mindbender's new fancy cloak. 20211110_020238 (1) by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr Below is a little summary of changes to the final set over the years: SCRAP-IRON - Jan 2018: repainted darker red and blue, added gold accents and gold decals (MORE INFO) FIREFLY - Swapped knees (seriously), new hands--his original hands, which are technically bare (look closely for fingernails) donated to other figure customs in need of ungloved ball-hinge hands. TOMAX/XAMOT - No changes since 2017 for now, though I was considering switching heads for casts of FSS Twins, but found them too large in the end--waiting for verified shrunken casts off the FSS casts or enlarged casts of the 25th casts, and then maybe chrome up the silver bits and update lower arms and hands. ZARTAN - Changed the torso--first used a modified Ripper in 2018 , now using a ROC Snake Eyes torso for a better leg-to-torso fit (gaps were to big with Ripper torso). Flesh on all parts had to be repainted with the torso switch. The belt also went through changes in the last few years, from a Lady Jaye belt, to a Techno Viper belt, finally to a Marvel Gamerverse Civil Warrior belt. That Civil Warrior belt is so useful, wish I had more... STORM SHADOW - really minor tweaks to one of the best figures of the modern 1/18 line: raised the head, carved out the back torso some behind the arms for wider range of arm movement, swapped the knees, and narrowed the thighs closer at the pelvis by removing torso mold flash and sanding down the inner thighs. Also cut a little off the upper torso left side so that his bandolier wouldn't obstruct is cobra emblem. Cleaned up the flesh paint around the head mask edges, and adjusted eyeball paints. Yet, I still haven't found the best way to store the longbow though. Seems too long to go in the backpack pocket, and seems like I'm missing some other obvious location? WILD WEASEL - From Mar 2019 , swapped head for a cast, added extra pouches over his stomach (using the front torso of a green ToysRus 3-pack Ace (same torso as WW), replaced lower arms and hands with those from an ROC Arctic Snake Eyes, added "aviator scarf" from 2-pack Resolute Pilot Destro, and repainted in Vallejo Red. MAJOR BLUDD - No changes since 2017. I?m slowly working on 50th inspired rebuild using a 50th Firefly, the WM Retro Hiss Driver chest armor, and a head cast of the 2018 JoCon Bludd--but the work as a whole at this time doesn't surpass my original in my eyes for a variety of reasons. This version here may not be the most accurate/ultimate possible, but it remains my favorite take to this day. DESTRO - switched out my modified 50th version for the newer WM Retro version. I like the cartoon colors for this set/group, but I still need to cut down the red disco collar a little as per my previous 50th version. And for this version, I've kept the original silver paint instead of using Liquid Chrome. I've always had problems getting a nice clean non-streaky finish, and always seem to dull the head up when posing a moving the head. Plus the chrome doesn't photograph well (or I can't shoot it well). As done with many other figures, I?ve narrowed legs at the pelvis joint for this guy, explained HERE. HOODED COCO - Updated Aug 2019 , adding military boots (via Major Bludd), chest strap, and lapels, and special gold battle mask/helmet. Though both painted dark blue, the figures in 2017 and 2021 shots above are different, where 2017 is the light blue 2012 Retaliation figure, while 2021 is the black 2015 50th Anniversary. Having a spare blue CC felt more useful than having one black one. BARONESS - updated Mar 2021 , with 2020 Retro Baroness body. I had hoped this newer release would have excellent facial paint apps, but that wasn?t the case. Luckily, I found a shrunken cast of the SDCC Baroness that's just about perfect. Repainted the gloves and belt in dark silver in tribute to the Sunbow style, matching Retro Destro's style in this set. DR MINDBENDER - updated recently in Sep 2021 , with plastic cape, new gauntlets (and hands), and new legs (for new boots). Had been wanting to update him for many years with a better cape, and finally came together this early fall. COPPERHEAD - No updates since 2017 for now. I considered updated the upper body and arms with Retaliation Roadblock parts (as done by Ian and Vitruvianpro), but ended up feeling that the torso is just too big--he's already tall with this smaller early 25th torso. I really don't mind the 25th version, once you reshape those deltoids. The hands could use some updated ball-hinge joints though? PhotoGrid_Plus_1636877332948 by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr Along with the GI Joe O13, assembling this particular Cobra 13 set in modern figure build form from 2007-2009 was what got me back into Joes after a long period of time. Learning ways to tweak, paint, and customize them to a higher quality--with lots of help from subsequent improved Hasbro builds over the years as well as research of custom work from others here and from other Joe sites--drove me to levels of Joe fandom I don't ever think I could have imagined. With 2022, I suspect 6" figures and classic o-ring releases will dominate Hasbro?s production for the next few years, while the modern super 3.75" super-articulated and sculpted build will fade out, being the odd middle child of those two other lines and having really run its course. I suspect that I myself will move in that direction as well, in terms of collecting and eventually tweaking and customizing. But it will be very difficult for those lines to surpass the passion and enjoyment that this 3.75" modern line has provided for me over the last several years. I hope my figures and photos have passed that along to others as well. 20211110_020238~3 (2) by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr

I’ve been wanting to get that baroness head but I had asked him about doing the shrink/reduction on the bombstrike head and misha. He seemed open to the idea and I kept thinking he might do it so I kept waiting for that to order the baroness.

Did you just invent the gold face-plate for CC? I don't think I've seen that before.

I'd post the HT link here, but all his linked photos are gone. Luckily, this one was a front pager, and hisstank stored the photos in their article HERE. I like COCO both hooded and helmeted, wanted a figure that could swap heads for both looks, but didn't like the hood look on light blue. At the same time I remembered the gold OB build, and had wanted to try gold via clear yellow paint over chrome. I liked the result, and made it more acceptable for the vipers to steal his old silver mask look. gCobra_25th_82-CobraCommander_2019-0722ec by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr If you aren't familiar with Oreobuilder, you are in for a treat (sort of). He was an excellent and prolific customizer for many years up to 2019, maybe my own favorite besides Stronox, and one who's entry style I used as a basis when I started posting. Unfortunately his blog site is now gone, as is his photo account (thus stripping his posts here of pics). Still, I'd recommend searching the threads here for comments, and use joecustoms.com to see photos of the work. Also check out phx customs for epic group projects. OreoBuilder (OB) probably has customs and repaints in modern 25th 3.75" from all figure eras and countries, and it's a real treat going thru his catalog of work. |
