The classic Firefly required the least amount of cutting down and sanding (need only work down the two mask seams), and has a nice width to fill out the helmet—but might also be a little squat vertically. Also the mask was sculpted fairly smooth without wrinkles and folds.

I like all these Viper variants.
I used to think that all the basic Vipers in a given unit should look exactly the same, but now I'm leaning toward there being some room for each of them to have a sort of individual look in the field, kind of like real soldiers usually do. |

When I was putting together the previous 5 figure Viper photo together, I also wanted to get 5 pack figure photos for all my black and grey uniformed figures as well (each color representing my Jungle and Desert variants respectively). Though some early pictures had been taken weeks ago, additional repaints were made, previous figures were tweaked, arm logo details added, and updated pictures taken—all finally finished this weekend with pictures below:
FINAL SETS: (Officer, Trooper, Viper, Stinger Driver, Heavy Weapons) gCobra_25th_86-Pack-Jungle_2019-0222ab by J Perez, on Flickr gCobra_25th_86-Pack-Desert_2019-0223bf by J Perez, on Flickr I always had the idea that some of the figure ideas from my Cobra O13 (http://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-jo...sfangfang.html) and 1983 set (http://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-jo...angfang-2.html) would naturally have Jungle and Desert variants a short time after my 1984 Trooper and Driver variants were introduced (http://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-jo...angfang-2.html). I envisioned later variants to be introduced at the same time other figures released in 1985 through 1987, may as mail-aways (I guess my fan-fiction extends to fan-nonfiction). The officer variants were done first, being the most obvious and easiest. The officer variants are fairly new (made last month) as I wanted to get five figures for each set photo, and I had two full spare Dollar General Troopers for use. In additional to a few similar colored BATs, the first iteration of the 5-packs was set at that time (see early sets below). Some head and webgear swaps were needed on my original Troopers and Drivers, which were using Officer parts. EARLY SETS: (Viper, Stinger Driver, BAT, Trooper, Officer) gCobra_25th_86-Pack-Jungle_2019-0128ab by J Perez, on Flickr gCobra_25th_86-Pack-Desert_2019-0126ab by J Perez, on Flickr Hasbro’s green Jungle BAT and grey v23 BAT made decent lazy stand-ins for these subgroups in this last year on my shelf. But from last month’s pictures, I wasn’t fully satisfied, and looked for ideas for replacement repaints. I didn’t have any more spare POC/30th/DG Cobra Troopers, but was able to cobble similar parts from other fodder to build the color variants of my Heavy Weapons (Bazooka or Machine Gunner) O13 Cobra Trooper (capped off by head and helmet casts from castor Paraviper//Cobra1678). In the early set, the grey Viper was originally the Hasbro 50th Viper Officer with its original grey unpainted, which was not a match for the grey mix of the others, but close enough. In the end, though, he got a matching coat paint. In the later set, the black Viper has the chrome head replaced with one painted dark silver--that head is one of two that had a developing crack through the head (seen near the left eye). So parapviper's additional head casts were most welcome (but I'm waiting for one pcast in dark silver if he can make it happen). Final Notes: Yesterday I realized I should have kept these subsets at 4 figures, matching the capacity of the Stinger—which was the whole inspiration for this color variant foolishness. Since I’ve exceeded that capacity, I’ll need to make more in the future—probably flamethrowers and TeleVipers (which succeed my original O13 Comm officer)—when the time and parts are available. Also both Jungle and Desert Sets are complemented nicely with Copperhead & MoccasinDriver, and WildWeasel & RattlerPilot respectively from 1984. If I ever get to more variants, I want to do photos with these figures and vehicles with environment backgrounds, for the complete environment theater//play experience envisioned.

I really like what you've done with all of these. The jungle Squad the colors are just fantastic! I really like your color combinations the Stinger Squad looks great as well. I'm going to do some customs here soon. I just normally don't have time between working and making parts and other things in life but I always enjoy looking at what you guys create.

You would think Hasbro would print money making five packs like this using these molds, and different environmental decos. Five packs for say $30 or so would rule.
And these figures are amazing customs. |

Reading this actual gave me ideas of of a "Vipers" comic miniseries, giving each of these guys a call sign and personality, and having them go "rogue". The Vipers going rogue would be the teaser blurb--what does going rogue actually mean for members of a terrorist organization built on ruling the the world? Also, what does an "elite" infantry trooper mean when your ranks are basically canon fodder?

I plan on doing some photos of some other 5-pack enviroment ideas but those will get finished in 3 or 4 weeks while I play with some ideas here and with some updates on other groups.
In the meantime, I wanted to switch off the blinker and reset this thread's cover thumbnail with its original cover, but done with some rendering effect (it's a phase I'm going through right now). Also, below are some photos of the group taken from my archives. The formation goes way back, but I didn't know what I was doing with a camera. From 2009, when I was buying figures selectively and not from ebay, and seemed resigned to the fact that I wouldn't be getting a proper Mindbender: gCobra_25th_Shelf-2HighCommand_2009-1112a by J Perez, on Flickr From 2010, with loose Mindbender finally secured from KC JoeCon, last picture of completely 25th style: gCobra_25th_Shelf-2HighCommand_2010-0731b by J Perez, on Flickr From 2015, with later Retaliation and 50th updates, and the good sense to eliminate camera flash finally: gCobra_25th_Shelf-2HighCommand_2015-0628 by J Perez, on Flickr From 2017, first post of this thread, "remastered" for a rendered look to feel a little like production//promotion//package art: gCobra_25th_Shelf-2HighCommand_2017-1120c by J Perez, on Flickr

I haven't touched this thread or Cobras beyond 1984 for about 2-1/2 years!
For about 1-1/2 years, I've been itching to update the photo below, the first photo of this thread from four years ago. gCobra_25th_Shelf-2HighCommand_2017-1122a by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr It's one of my personal favorite photos because these guys are my favorite figures from the vintage era, and the setup mimics the central top tier of my Cobra Collection display shelf. I would only allow myself to recreate this photo if enough figures had good enough updates since taking this photo was taken, and if I could upgrade Dr Mindbender. 2021-09-25_04-21-12 by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr Over the last year and a half, a decent number of the figures got updated or repainted, and I'd been working on the good docto--but never got good enough results on him to warrant the reshoot. I'd have the occassional breakthrough in certain areas and parts, but he never got where I thought I could take him. He'd get shelved for other figures during this time until I could find new parts that get me going and testing again. During a recent trip to St Louis two weekends ago, I think I found the part I needed. Last weekend I think I got it to work. Things got rolling from there with some final bits, and he's almost ready to show. Hopefully the results are worth the wait... |
