I really hated how the 5 POA one couldn't even hold his weapon properly. I had a damaged bootleg Walmart Stormtrooper that was broken so I used him for donor parts. His arms are from that figure to allow him to hold his flamethrower. I wasn't going to do his legs as it didn't really add much, but when I looked at my 6" one and realized his lower legs are just basically standard Stormtrooper legs under the knee armor, I decided to give it a shot.
This was why I wasn't going to bother with the knees, as even with the extra articulation, he can't do much cause he has no waist swivel and the hip joints limit what I can do, but still glad I did it. Group shot: The officer with backpack just has the backpack added to the webgear and put onto a Walmart Stormtrooper and the heavy gunner is just a Walmart Stormtrooper with the heavy gunner gear. Compared to the 6" one. If you look at the knees, you'll know what I mean about the normal knees underneath.

How do you replace the arms and legs on a 5poa figure? I was just going to kit bash a normal trooper, but this is way better. I would like to do this for a snow trooper as well....

Basically, I just cut off the limb I want to replace and drill a hole to fit the new articulated limb on. The Snowtrooper is a lot harder cause there isn't any comparable part to use as a replacement and he has the skirt piece molded onto the leg.
I finally went and did this because one of my knockoff Walmart Stormtrooper's belt fell off and his torso was loose so I figured that I might as well use him as a donor for my Flametrooper.

Yeah, I saw that Re the snow trooper. I might just pop a FO head on a black series snow trooper. It's close enough... |

Same process as the arms, but a bigger drill bit.
For this particular one, I had to cut the leg below the knee armor. Then I drilled a hole straight up the leg and then cut off the material behind the knee pad so that the new lower leg will plug into the hole just behind the knee pad, if you konw what I mean. You also have to use an exacto knife or bigger drill bit to counter sink the hole so that the limb goes into the hole and the upper limb portion will conform to the shape of the joint. There are knock offs available on Ebay from China. They look just like the real deal, but if you put them side by side with the legit one, you can feel the difference in the way the joints are. Also, the bootleg/knock offs have no paint gap between the visor and the black line (the way it should be). They are more likely unlicensed figures being made by the factory. You can see them all over Ebay from sellers in HK and China and they are like $5 each figure. The two Stormtroopers behind the Heavy Gunner are knockoffs. You wouldn't be able to tell unless you really scrutinize it. I believe the two on the other side behind Hux are bootlegs as well. If I look at them in person, I will know which were legit and which were the bootleg. I bought basically a set of 5 and one was damaged, which is why I only have 4. The rest are legit ones bought at Walmart. The joints are little stiffer but the torso varies. I have one that ratchets, and one that is so loose that it always wants to just flop. This custom is made using a legit Stormtrooper. The easiest way to tell is to look at the helmet just above the eye pieces. If you look, you'll see that the lens and the black stripe above are two distinct paint masks as you can see the white strip separating the two black parts of the helmet. On the bootlegs, the black lens goes right up to the black strip so there is no white in between. I think the bootlegs also don't have that date stamp on the leg.

I've seen those ebay lots and assumed they were more legit. Even considered buying them.
My experience with sellers in China is that they will replace or refund a figure if you contact them. The figures I've gotten from China before all seemed legit, but a couple were factory errors (two left calves or something). I recall buying some on ebay from Indonesia or someplace and receiving a package with green "Inspected by Department of Homeland Security" label on it. |
