Rare daytime and no lights photo at that--thanks. Or sorry... 2 outta 3 on the main components, you have identified. Good eye on the vest (from the back even)! Retro Stalker legs replace those awkward Retro CT legs. My fodder bin is piling up on those legs, along with the leg style used for Retro Roadblock and Retro Lady Jaye. Final figure design is coming//likely (pending final majority showcase approval by my multi-selves). Honestly it's not up to par with the rest of the OG13 new builds, but is passable I think. |

Your Clutch figure is what I would consider one of the best of the character that I have seen! The parts and the paints come together very nicely, and they definitely make for a memorable Clutch. Great work as usual!

STEELER [2022 RETRO REDUX]
20220618_083138 by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr BUILD: Legs, Lower & Mid Torso: 2021 Walmart Retro Collection Stalker Upper Torso, Upper and Lower arms: 2021 Walmart Retro Collection Cobra Trooper Head: 2009 V30 Resolute Duke Helmet: 2021 Walmart Retro Collection Grunt Visor: vintage 1983 Accessories Battle Pack Vest: 2011 V9 7-pack Low-Light Holster and Strap: 2009 V23 ROC Destro Hands: ??? (black, ball-jointed, padless sculpt, fodder bin Paints: Tamiya XF-07 NATO Green, XF-1 Flat Black, X-12 Gold Leaf, XF-15 Flat Flesh NOTES: I may have said last year that I didn?t really plan to do a Retro New Build Steeler due to lack new and real new build parts that worked. But I was willing to at least try some things with the available new bodies with some of the previous released vests. Of many vests tried, the Low-Light one seemed to get promising results, so I tried to take it to a final concept version?paints, parts, bits. PhotoGrid_Plus_1655558205011 by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr Without modding, the vest was a decent fit when placed on the Cobra Trooper torso. For a better look, I cut down a lot of the interior molding (both vest and torso) and cut off the right-side snap closure mold. Also cut away at the interior of the color to expose as much neck and shirt collar as possible. Cut off the mold folds of the CT mask on the neck and sculpted on a tall turtleneck. It was very important for me to have a prominent gold shirt and collar for Steeler (to hopefully offset other things that weren?t so on-model). Not much modding was needed for the holster and strap. I might have thinned the strap from the underside for a little less bulk, and thinned the interior a bit to fit the larger handgun from the WM Retro Stalker. On the vest, the upper left pockets were sliced off to accommodate the holster (which conviently conceals most of the cut area). The holster and strap are still loose at this point, not glued down, as I haven?t settled on that final perfect setting spot. The bigger handgun was used to hopefully make the holster look less mold bulky?an issue I have with workable holsters. 2022-06-28_09-47-13 by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr The head came from my previous version of Grunt redo back in July 2021, needing a new host with the official Grunt release. The visor needed slight tweaking to fit on the new style helmets, with a little carving out of the upper inner arc at rim helmet. After working it to fit (and slight rounding out of the sides), I?ve found that I really like this whole head-helmet-visor combo?best look out of all my Steelers (not all shown above). For the color, and for the new build set, I decided NOT to go with the more vintage figure?s lighter green (Vallejo 70.882 Middlestone used for 5th figure above). The NATO Green used is lighter and more vivid shade of green I used for the others?except for Zap who does match Steeler), but I wanted all set figures to not vary so much in hue this time. Below was a WIP paint test shot in the Middlestone application before stripping and repainting. Though not used in my final, it was an important step in that it helped keep me going with this figure that had me on the fence the whole time (and even now). 2022-06-28_09-49-54 by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr Using the Cobra Trooper arms is a little suspect I?ll admit. I?ve got a bunch of these piling up in the fodder bin, and thought I?d run with them on this figure, where the vest is so overwhelming anyway. The biggest reason though for using the CT arms is that I loved finally incorporating that gold band paint around the upper arms, found on the original vintage figure. I wanted to get more gold on the figure but putting that gold on the vest didn?t work?the vest is too busy looking as it is and adding the gold only made it worse. 20220618_112045 by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr Above is an arm check compare?one big concern I had about using the CT arms, as I knew they were noticeably shorter than the Grunt/Stalker arms, and that the Marauder lower arms were longer than both Retro arms. To help even things out I used some longer hands on Steeler, which balanced things out with the Grunt arms. For the Clutch arms (also used for Breaker, RnR), I am going to experiment with shortening them by cutting off the wrist band length and using the shorter of the Grunt and MTF hands. In the meantime, we?ll just have to keep all the figure?s arms bent a bit forward? 20220618_112045 by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr So that?s really it on the notes. I should say that a big rule for me was to stay with all new new type body parts (except head, hands). I may try different arms, including MTF and JT when I?ve gotten over my fixation on the gold arm bands. Also, the torso on the Joy Toy Mech Maintenance Team figures have a lot of promise (an expensive GAMBLE though). But right now I?m quite happy with this figure, and he blends well enough with the other Retro Redos, despite the busy vest. Look for more group pics (and updated finals for the rest) in the near future). 20220618_171555 by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr For my 25th Steeler showcase back in June 2018, I did the ?bonus? photo below (https://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-j...#post5136171): GiJoe_O13-Steeler-BonusPic1_2018-0528b by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr At first I didn?t want to do it again, as these newer figures are even bigger and more oversized for the venerable tank. Instead, I though may doing a shot with the smaller RAM and recently finished Clutch (with a nod to Flash of Two Worlds)? 20220625_201348 (1) by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr In the end I did do a shot redo on the tank, so? 20220625_205617 by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr 20220625_211053 by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr 20220625_211053~2 by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr 20220618_121947 by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr 20220618_112045 (1) by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr 20220618_090749 by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr 20220618_112045 (1) by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr PhotoGrid_Plus_1655591565396 by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr 20220605_144216 by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr 20220618_210044 by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr 20220619_164844 by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr PhotoGrid_Plus_1656197031509 by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr 20220625_190202 (1) by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr 20220625_180028 by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr 2022-06-25_10-50-22 by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr 2022-06-25_10-22-03 by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr 2022-06-28_10-35-47 by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr

I've been waiting for this one! Love the detail you provide on your process and techniques. Much appreciated. Another great custom and, as always, the photos are fantastic. (Though I kind of wish I had never seen that one with Clutch's exposed lower half.)

Cool! I never would have thought the low-light vest would work for Steeler, but it does, especially with how you have cut it down a bit and added the requisite holster. I?m also surprised how well the Resolute Duke head?s has a similar expression to ARAH Steeler. Maybe it?s how you painted it. Also impressive to see how well you?ve turned the short-lived retro lineup into 75% of O13. (85% if you count your Scarlett not pictured here ? maybe she doesn?t count since she is lacking a new body. Either way, just two or three left now?
Really enjoying your photos with the MOBAT and RAM there. Nice posing and perspective. |
