Ironically, you used a true Grunt head for your updated Grunt! Yes, it was Kickstart...but Grunt v14 also uses that head, which was originally Airborne's.

Yep. Said that in my notes. It was a good choice, and hard to tell it was also Airborne's also released later that year due to hair color and skin tone. And the helmet that came from the FSS tan Grnt just fits, barely.

My Kickstart hangs out in the back of the green hiss with 50th Grunt, with a Resolute Stalker at the turret. The weird green sub-collection.

Airborne, yes...but I didn't see the part where you realized it had been actually used for a Grunt figure, too. Anyway, I just wasn't sure if you knew that fact, as it was an SDCC exclusive. Those can be easy to miss!

I have to agree with everything you said about the action figure, and even the character of Grunt. Really basic, generic character, but he is an essential O13 character. Great choice of parts on each of these. I, too, used the Kickstart head for my custom Grunt. Seeing that SDCC Grunt has given me some inspiration to do a classic green-shirt O13 Grunt custom.
My favorite Grunt will always be the Falcon Glider Grunt. I guess because he was the first tan shirt G.I. Joe, and it made him really stand out from the rest. Jason Last edited by jlw515; 06-04-2018 at 08:58 AM.. |

(10) STEELER
The original Steeler is likely a popular figure due to his being packed in with the popular and iconic MOBAT. And the figure was nice, given that it had wholly unique pieces for the arms and torso, and had that special visor. Personally, I never owned the tank until its 25th re-release—so can only imagine its full potential nostalgia goodness as an original owner. Still, after purchasing the MOBAT and getting it running, I thought it was surprisingly cool—though a bit undersized (as is typical with all vehicles for this line, even to this day). Unfortunately the initial Hasbro 25th Steeler release was the second most disappointing O13 figure produced, a poorly kitbashed figure that only got the webgear right. And I would probably have been satisfied with the Target Battlepack version, but for some strange reason they had to go with a TAN version. The tan version would’ve been more acceptable if the first version wasn’t so terrible and if there actually had been a tan version back in the day. For years, I used my own simply kit-bashed Steeler using the Comic Pack Hawk body then later the Zap body, while constantly scouring this site for better recipes and ideas. In 2013, I had my breakthrough with a satisfying build—one that was closer to the original, yet blend in seamlessly with the other O13 25th builds. The final version pictured includes small refinements through the years. GiJoe_O13-Steeler-Classic25th_2017-1028b by J Perez, on Flickr Build: •Legs, hands, belt: 25th Zap •Arms and lower torso: 25th Cobra Trooper •Upper Torso: 25th Wild Bill, with 25th Recondo neck •Head: POC Hawk •Head: Hands (final): POC Beachhead •Webgear: 25th Steeler •Visor: vintage Steeler Paints: •Gloves, boots, trim: Testors Flat Black •Uniform: Vallejo Panzer Series Middlestone Notes: The first task was to provide a new torso that at least had the collared look of the original. The Wild Bill upper torso was a good start, but its neck was undersized in length, offset by the unusually tall lower torso. So the neck was carefully cut out and replaced with a longer neck with glue and Aves Apoxie sculpt. The basic Snake Eyes torso was shorter that I wanted for my Steeler. The Cobra trooper lower torso had a better height fit to the figure, but had to be worked down at the connection to the upper torso, and at the hip sockets. The Zap legs also had the right beef and height. Though these legs would more accurate for use on all figures, I saved them for figures that needed added height. The final figure ended up one of the taller figures of the set, but he doesn’t grossly tower over the other figures. The head was replaced with the POC Hawk—too good a sculpt not to use, but I had other more preferable head choices for my Hawk. It seems to work well here, and also fits the small helmet. Holes were drilled into the helmet for the vintage visor. A bit of red colored plastic was added to a dash of red/orange to the group wherever I could sneak it in to the group. I believe the red visor idea came from someone else’s custom picture that I came across when researching. The original art had it red as well, but more likely due to reflections from the background explosion. Regardless, the red here adds a little something different. The Vallejo Middlestone was a great match to the original figure’s color—I’ve even used to color correct the elbow pieces of the vintage Zap and Steeler (with a little bit of semigloss finish). For this figure, a Vallejo Satin Varnish was used to match the finish of the rest of the classic 25 set. He could likely use a repaint though: I didn’t use a Primer on the figure when it was first painted, and Vallejo color coats sorely need that primer for longevity. GiJoe_O13-7Steeler_2018-0420b by J Perez, on Flickr When I set on the task of building the addition comic and deserts O13 sets, the o-ring versions would be a breeze but the idea rebuilding a bunch of Steelers was the most daunting and dreaded—it was very hard and I didn’t remember clearly remember all the pieces and steps required. So on the comic 25th I called it a day, and skipped the torso mod—going for that standard red-collar look from the comic Oktober Guard Two-parter (as well as his Order of Battle pin-up). For the desert 25th, I experimented with using a 25th 5-pack Duke lower torso, which actually fit better to the upper torso and lower legs—but makes him tower over ALL my other O13 figures. The 5 o’clock shadow is included on some of the heads but not all. It’s a feature used only in the comics, and was drawn in a lot—but not always. It may have been included on my 25th classic as well before I recently swapped heads from one that had painted flesh to one that was cast flesh. To this day I’m on the fence about the stubble for Steeler—hence, the different versions. I truly regret not being able to find a way to sneak in a homage or even a nod the he different version of Steeler used in the cartoon, but that version just doesn’t seem to sync visually with the versions from the comics, card art, or figure. Cartoon Steeler’s role in the “Worlds Without End” episodes was the Tank Commander’s most noteworthy and memorable thing in any media that he’s appeared. I was tempted to homage the cartoon version with my bonus pic, but my figures as built don’t really evoke that cartoon version’s look or personality (and I think the picture ideas were a bit morbid). Instead, here’s a shot with his tank buddies from the comic, issue #5: GiJoe_O13-Steeler-BonusPic1_2018-0528b by J Perez, on Flickr

Another great custom knocked out of the park! I think you picked some great parts for this custom. I'm torn between Desert Steeler and Comic Steeler as my favorites (maybe it's the facial hair).
However, I REALLY like the fact that you added a working holster to your main custom Steeler. Did you use a boot holster? Can you give us some info into how you did this? A working web gear holster is one of the main things I plan to do to update my custom. And finally, so glad you used the vintage ARAH visor/binoculars! I think they look way better than the skinny versions. Great job! Jason |
