Very impressive collection of customs. I love the original team, and to see them these figures treated with such devoted care and attention, it's just so awesome.

6) ROCK N ROLL
Rock ‘n Roll was and interesting character and figure, and had the potential to be one of the greats. But in hindsight, I guess I’d grade him somewhere between low A-lister or high B-lister. Hama didn’t use him as much early on as seem to remember (but makes up for it years later). Disappointingly underused in the cartoon, but at least he appeared and was voiced. A solid figure with an all-purpose MOS and great weapon accessory, he was quickly overshadowed by Roadblock early on. Still, as a kid I think I should have got him or Breaker, instead of Flash. And I would have even gotten his 88 version despite having stopped collecting in general (the dual weapons were just too over the top—may if he’d been given a steady-cam or an M249…) The 25th version was an undeniable failure when released—an early wake up call to how the 25th figures could actually worsen rather than improve. Nevertheless, I was set on finally having a complete O13 set, so he was a must-have as much as he was a terrible figure. But, I would say that because of this figure, I got fully immersed into customizing (fodder research and gathering, cast shopping, painting, torso-splitting, x-acto knife work, hot-glue work), and a lot of the work to get him right paid off for all other customs I’ve shown. GiJoe_O13-RockNRoll-Classic25th_2017-1028b by J Perez, on Flickr Build: • Upper body, arms: 25th Comic 2-Pack Rock’n’Roll • Head, helmet: FSS Topside, head shaved, repainted • Helmet: 2th Zap or Resolute Comic 2Pack Shockblast, painted • Lower Torso: 25th Copperhead, modded, shaved • Lower legs: 25th Zap • Weapon: M-60 from 2004 Comic 3-Pack Classified Snake Eyes • Belt: 25th Box set Snake Eyes, harness cut • Ammo belts: ?? 25th figure, shortened and repainted. • Backpack harness: 30th 7-Pack Falcon • Backpack: 25th 5-Pack Flint Paints: • Body: Testors Dark Green • Belt, boots: Testors Leather Notes: Using the Comic pack RnR would adequately solve the arms issues, so my biggest issue for many years was that the figure was too short, and the Duke legs used were too skinny. Switching to Zap legs when they became available helped (expensive fodder at the time), but the figure was still short next to Breaker and Grunt, and nowhere near as tall as slender Flash. Using the original 25th Clutch head would have also helped the height, but made his body look undersized (a smaller head makes his body appear more bulky—a trick used to great effect by comic artist Arthur Adams). Granted, the original head was TINY, but was sculpted really well. So I stayed with this head and body build for many years—until the OCD finally got to me. Using the Copperhead lower torso (cheap fodder at the time!) gave the figure the height needed, and generally had the right sculpting, but a lot of shaving down had to happen where upper and lower torso meet, and at the crotch. Also, the holes in the upper legs for the ball bar need to be re-drilled and reset (by building up super-glue) to close the gaps in the hip cavities. Likely, there may better parts options available today, but I did want to retain an early 2007-2008 look/build, along with the rest of my O13 gang. The gloves are a bit off-model from the bare-handed vintage figure, but work well enough with the figure and with the group (I was adding lots more gloves). Last year I got a Club Topside head off an ebay seller for relatively cheap--better than trying to get the original club figure or an unpainted cast. It’s a bigger head than the puny original, and his hair had to be cut down to fit into a medium Zap sided helmet, but looks good—not too big, not too small—and a nice neutral expression (finally with painted eyelids). Finally, he would be the tallest of the group, without having to push the neck length too far, and not use the larger head and helmets. With the taller torso, the 25th figure’s original ammo belts were too short, but I was able to modify one of the machine gun ammo belts from other figures and get it close to a reasonable scale/size for replacement. Note: there are slight difference in some the belts available that have a nice indent near the ends of the shells—providing a nice line to cut all the shells shorter in a uniform matter. The belt, from the standard Snake Eyes harness, helps to bulk up the character overall, hide the lower torso to upper leg joints, and tie in with common parts to the rest of the smaller/skinny figure builds. To cap off the figure, I feel that the M-60 from the 2004 Comic Pack Classified/Snake Eyes, is most appropriate and classic weapon for RnR, given the time period. Yo Joe’s database says the original’s figure is a M-60, but as other pointed out, looks more like a German MG-74—it looks nice, but I wanted the more authentic-looking M-60 that I’d seen in movies (I’ll admit I’m not a big weapons expert--except when it comes to the O13). GiJoe_O13-7RockNroll_2018-0415b by J Perez, on Flickr The desert and comic 25th figures generally follow the same pattern as my classic 25th described above, with a few tweaks. Both keep the original ammo belts, which were cut below the arms to rest lower for more chest coverage. The comic version gets painted 50th Gung-ho hands (breaking my self-imposed silly rules, but I ran out of usable older gloved hands) and a repainted repurposed 2004 Classic o-ring head. I love using those 2004 heads for the 25th comic figures whenever possible! The desert 25th gets my leftover head and helmet, used for my classic 25th for many years, with hair shaved down to better fit the helmet. The helmet (from a cast seller) is a little bit bigger than the tiny original and softer. It helped to make the head look bigger and was a better fit with that original head. He also gets that beautiful M249 LMG sculpt—historically developed way after 82 and not appropriate for my classic (details!), but okay for the desert set which I envision as an early 90s set. Finally, the desert version uses a 2007 Cobra trooper lower torso instead of the Copperhead piece, which works just as well with less whittling/shaving—if anyone wants to try. Both o-ring and 25th desert figures were painted with Testors Dark Tan, for a darker shade similar the darker shades of the classics. For the comic o-ring, the arms were replaced with 2004 comic o-ring Clutch arms. Arms and face then had to be repainted to match. For the classic o-ring, I’m thinking that the original ’82 crotch piece would work better. I bought him only a few years ago and didn’t release the torso above is wider than the others. No quick last-minute updates for the Rock ‘n Roll 7-set. Usually something comes up when I do these write-ups and really study the photos, but nothing here. But doing the bonus photos has been fun, and the 25th Comic figures have resonated well. So here’s Rock’n’Roll’n’RAM: GiJoe_O13-RockNroll-BonusPic1_2018-0515a by J Perez, on Flickr

Good call on using that Topside head for Rock N Roll, it really makes him better.

Your Rock-N-Roll is miles ahead of what Hasbro gave us! This is what R-N-R should have looked like...

Another great set of customs. I really like the fact that with your ME custom you went with the ammo belts rather than the bandoliers. I think this makes the custom look 100% better. For this reason, I like your ME version better than the comic pack custom.
The Top Side head is an interesting choice that works really well. I never could figure RnR out because, to me, he either looked like a blonde Grizzly Adams or some kind of Hippy. I don't think the comic artists ever communicated that "beach bum" look. Also great choice using the Copperhead lower torso. Your custom looks like a beast next to the shorter 25th version! Jason |

Jason OG13 beards and beard length (Clutch, Breaker, RnR) seem to be a point of division among the OG13 diehards. At least for RnR, there's no debate that this boy is bearded--no 5 o'clock shadow here! My general default source for heads usually starts from the Herb Trimpe style from the comics, then the toys themselves (followed by the cartoon if I'm looking for a little something extra). Based on the comic, RnR should probably have more growth to it--as done on the 2004 Comic O-ring version. The 25th head's beard was acceptable, but the head was the size of a knee piece. I broke my style pattern with RnR, due to my own personal bias to the figure's look. I blame it on the Sideshows RnR figure https://www.sideshowtoy.com/collecti...tibles-100040/ which sported the short beard. I really liked the look, and it seemed more in line with military standards. A year later, when I saw GeneralJoe's reviews and pictures for the FSS Topside head G.I. Joe: Figure Subscription Service - Topside , I knew what I wanted to do. For later or modernized takes, I do like the longer hair and longer beard looks, especially when people mix that up with the V2 and/or spec ops look. I love your RogueRescue to it to the ultimate extreme here: http://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-jo...-s-team-2.html |

That Top Side Head is a brilliant idea... Lack of a head I liked is the main thing that has kept me from being happy with my custom (he’s got an Avengers Thor head on right now) and eventually completing my OG13. I was going to break down and get one of the bearded
Marauder heads even though I don’t care for it, but I’m stealing your idea now. Good work on the ammo belts as well! Nobody has yet made links in a realistic enough style for me. The 25th RnR belts are the size of shotgun shells and the Marauder belts are at least .50 caliber. The Marauder WWII belts look much closer to a proper 30 cal size, I’ll probably adapt some of those when they are released.

Based on OB's version (http://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-jo...ct-thread.html), I think the MTF head looks REALLY good, although a little bigger than my style preference. If I did go that direction, I'd repaint or scrape down the eyes a bit smaller and squintier. Regarding the ammo belts, I'd love to see photos of size comparisons or get some tight dimension specs on the new MTF WWII belts when they come out. My belts are adequate, but I'd still like something a bit smaller even. |
