Went to my backup walmart to get a baby bottle of acetone for some additional testing.
Also found some additional test subjects in the clearance aisle: 2021-11-21_05-44-36 by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr Left four Officers. Savings somewhat offset by cost of new underwear. Not sure what to do with these yet... |

Ended going back tonight to get the rest of the $9 officers. I might need the torsos in the future for Flash and Grand Slam...
Retested the lip paint removal with the new bottle of acetone. This 4 Oz bottle is $0.96 and is still probably more than you will ever need for your figures: https://www.walmart.com/ip/Onyx-Prof...fl-oz/11047146 Dipped a qtip in, dabbed excess off (onto my free palm)--tip on needs to wet, best not to have excess that dips and stays on the figure. Then stroked over the lips as if painting--antipainting if you will. I actually did his hair first as a pre-test since there was some green helmet paint that needed to be removed (see the ear grooves). PhotoGrid_Plus_1637547982026 by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr Again no problems with the paint removal. There is still some paint left in the deep groove, visible in the photo but not real noticeable in person and with my large hobby magnifying glass. It is disguised by natural shadowing, and actually helps to keep the lips and mouth line distinct. In the macro photo, you can see issue near the left side. That is caused by mold imperfection. There are some hairline grooves throughout the face, maybe hair in the mold when cast? Below I've traced the lines in a light purple. I first noticed these when I totally repainted the face (coming soon). PhotoGrid_Plus_1637548314945 by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr The lines and the deep groove are really noticeable at normal eye view. Remember that these photos are UHD (click to go to flickr and zoom in real close to really explore the mold especially the skin pore texture)-- for a better idea of in hand look, move away from your viewing screen until the photo head size matches the figures true head size. Alternatively, have the actual figure in hand, pull it close enough to you to match the screen size head, and try to focus you eyes. Best is somewhere between... Last note on this: the eyebrows were not removable by this acetone, not sure exactly why, maybe the digital dot matrix application (but I thought the lips were applied similarly?)? At least they are applied on the mold at the right location (not too high like on older figs). If the shininess bothers you enough, you'll need to repaint over the application--which is actually easier than doing it without a trace where it's hard see the lay of the sculpt at the brow ridge. Micron pen maybe work, but mine are shiny as well. Best may be using a toothpick to dab paint on point style. Ask any questions for stuff up to this point. Tomorrow night we'll get to Days 3 and 4 (the repaints), I hope. |

Hmmm, I wonder what I did wrong to melt my lips off. Maybe I was scrubbing too hard to get the lipstick off. The lips deteriorated so much that I had to use an exacto knife to carve the mouth line back in.

Grunt: 2021 Retro Tweaks ? Act II
Last session I did some basic tweaks to Grunt in removing the lip paint, painting over the eyebrows to be less glossy, and started reshaping the helmet for a more vintage figure look. Photos were snapped, lips were melted by some but not by all, and a certain level of ?improvement? was hopefully established that could be implemented by many. At the end of all that, alluded to smaller issues I had with the pale flesh tone and the darker than vintage green hue. And so? Day 3: Flesh Repaint 2021-10-17_10-18-04 by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr Far left is still the unmodified Grunt, far right is now the previous modded Grunt with lip and eyebrow fix, and start of helmet mod. For the center figure, the flesh (hands, neck head) was painted with Tamiya XF-15 Flat Flesh, much less pale than the original. The eyebrows were repainted with more attitude and the pupils made a bit smaller to better match with other older or MTF heads use for the rest of my OG09 Retro Rebuilds. The helmet was sanded down more than previous try for more roundness?but I think closeup on the photo shows that even more can be sanded down at the bottom edges. As a test I also switched out the webgear with my June 2021 Grunt webgear taken from a Stalker and painted Tamiya Flat Brown. It?s darker and a bit reddish and I felt wasn?t the best mesh with that earlier Grunt custom?s lighter green. However I think it works great with the darker green of the Hasbro Grunt, and in the end, all tones are darker and richer (if not vintage accurate), marking for me another stopping point to take comparison photos and decide if this was good enough for final. 2021-10-17_10-18-04 by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr I should clarify that I don?t think there is anything necessarily unappealing or abnormal with the pale skin. For me, it was first how it clashed with the dark lip paint, and second how it clashed with the rest of my OG09, who are all painted the same Tamiya flesh to incorporate use of other heads as well as MTF arms with rolled up sleeves. I knew in the end that I was going to have to do it, but others might not really need to take this it to this level. But if you have the skills, I recommend going for it, and also maybe the next step. Day 4: Body Repaint 2021-10-20_10-48-30 by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr Back in October, I considered this to be my final stopping point. I really liked the lighter green Tamiya Green paint (Tamiya XF-65 Field Grey) I used on my first Retro Grunt from June 2021, as it was a really decent match to the standard vintage OG13 green. I also thought that the Hasbro Grunt?s lighter brown webgear worked better with this green paint than my darker reddish Green. The brown webgear was modified?whittled thinner at the straps around the shoulders to look a little less bulky and be more flexible. 20211017_233406 by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr My 25th Classic, new Retro, and vintage classic. I will always love my 25th Classic set?which purposely stays true to the early 25th builds for all their warts?but the new builds with proper tweaks at pretty much on another level in terms of sculpting, proportions, and adherence to the vintage 82 figures. PhotoGrid_Plus_1634538602214 by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr Another head closeup: original, repainted, vintage. Pointed out in an early post (here and/or elsewhere), the head sculpt is really good?repainted or not?and has been noted for similarities to the original vintage sculpt?s facial features?tough and hardnosed. The Resolute Duke head I previously used from June 2021 really had no chance of making it final after I got a ?real? Grunt in hand. 2021-10-20_11-01-52 by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr Crops of Day 1 thru 4. At the end of the day, the tweaks are subtle at the intermediate steps I?ll have to admit. Usually, you all don?t get to see these minor steps (the reason some other figure updates lag or delay for me), but here I thought others might appreciate the steps?especially if they don?t want to or aren?t able go with the full on repainted. Also, sometimes for other cases, I roll back a step (but not here). 20211022_001018 by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr Above: Five Grunts, vintage with 4 Retro variations on the classic (before the extras get turned into other repaints or other OGs). I never have that many copies of a single figure all at once (except for that Stalker). If the modern Retro line is truly done, this may be the last time as well. Got distracted by Omnicrons, O-rings, Turkey and Dart Guns?
Besides zeroing in o a final template for my updated OG09 for 2022, the end goal for this figure was to recreate that classic Grunt card art. I don?t think I can give myself another shot at this until a 6? Classic figure is made, so I took several tries at it, and sat on the last one for awhile for releasing here. I just popped one of my Grunts out of the package last weekend. I tried using the same nail polish remover you suggested, and maybe I'm not pressing hard enough but I'm having a tough time with removing the lip stick.
First thing I thought of after opening the figure was, "I wonder how he'll look with a vintage helmet on" and dadgummit, I didn't even try it. Jason |
