Wow! Very nice.
As for working holster, I did something similar. All I did was cut off the fixed one and glued on a functional holster. I do love the boot holster he used better as it's slimmer profile. Here's mine but honestly, I love what hisshissfangfang did for his OG13 way better.

Another great custom knocked out of the park! I think you picked some great parts for this custom. I'm torn between Desert Steeler and Comic Steeler as my favorites (maybe it's the facial hair).
However, I REALLY like the fact that you added a working holster to your main custom Steeler. Did you use a boot holster? Can you give us some info into how you did this? A working web gear holster is one of the main things I plan to do to update my custom. And finally, so glad you used the vintage ARAH visor/binoculars! I think they look way better than the skinny versions. Great job! Jason Quote:

Here's mine but honestly, I love what hisshissfangfang did for his OG13 way better. It is a Zap//Dollar general right boot holster, cut short at the top to allow the smallest pistol I could live with, and sanded down in thickness a bit in the back and front to reduce bulk. I wanted it as thin and small as possible--I just to have that collar and undershirt as visible (I end up taking out the pistol for a some pictures for that reason). The webgear's original holster was cut out, and the working holster was glued in using gel superglue. The edges of each part to be glued was scored with an exacto knife in a fine shallow criss-cross pattern to let the glue seep into each piece a little for more durable hold. The right shoulder strap and was also cut to taper and tuck under the holster, repositioned for the new height of the figure and webgear, and show off that collar/undershirt. Workable chest holders are tricky, when considering the size of holster needed fit the available pistol molds. I've considered it for Clutch, but I have a feeling it would be too bulky. I like the way Clutch's vest looks as provided.

Regarding the red lense on the visor, I believe it was Mandingo Rex's custom that I took it from. I can't find his original thread, but found this http://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-jo...ankcase-6.html when I was image googling. It was a great idea, and a great custom.

COOL! Thanks for the how-to on the web gear holster. Your customs make me want to go back and tweak most if not all of my O13 custom figures. Definitely gonna upgrade my Steele with a working holster.
I did a working holster for my custom Clutch. I think I used the ankle holster from Ace. Jason |

(11) CLUTCH
Clutch is probably my favorite O13 character whose figure I never had as kid. Hats off to Larry Hama, who used the heck out of him is the early years in the comic, bringing a bit of levity to those early missions, and making Clutch the last to make my Essential 7 of the O13 based on those comics. His toy figure was poised for success as well, given that he had a unique torso vest piece and was packed with the ever-popular VAMP. The 25th VAMP with Clutch release in hindsight seems like a no-brainer, and was a solid buy. The VAMP was slightly retooled with some nice subtle updates, though unfortunately small for the larger 25th figures (solved, by removable feet!). And the Clutch figure was a nice release, trending upward in improvements, rather than stagnating like O13 figures just before. We get the O13 taller lower legs with the accurate sculpted O13 boots (also used for Steeler, which shipped simultuaneously), and the awesome and accurate Clutch vest. The lower arms would be a problem with early releases, but would be corrected later in production. In the worst possible situation, we could have gotten a Clutch made from the Armadillo Steeler figure and webgear, with a bearded head, based on the way later O13 figures were trending. My disappointment in the figure would be in the head. The full bearded look jives with the original figure and box art as well as the cartoon. But I was really hoping that Hasbro would try to bridge the gap between his Herb Trimpe comic look and the original figure’s look—similar to what they did with the Breaker release. And if they went with the full beard, at least give a bit of a smirk or smile for the head sculpt. Additionally, though the head size was an improvement over the smaller heads of early 25th figures, they needed to provide a larger helmet. GiJoe_O13-Clutch-Classic25th_2017-1028b by J Perez, on Flickr Build: •Body, arms, upper legs: 25th Clutch •Lower legs : 25th Duke •Hands: 25th Tiger Force Flint •Head: 25th Lift-Ticket •Helmet and Gun holster: 25th Breaker •Belt: 25th Zap Paints: •Gloves, boots, trim: Tamiya Flat Brown •Uniform: Testors Medium Green Notes: I give myself some grief about this figure, as I went off-model (outside my usual parameters) with the added gloves and googles, but there is form and function related to those items. As a big fan of the early comics, I really needed a Clutch to have a smile or a smirk, and a five o’clock shadow instead of a beard. The Lift-Ticket head ends up as the best option for this, and was immediately swapped as soon as I had it in hand. This larger head, however, needed to the larger Breaker helmet. The googles were added to hopefully mask the large nature of the helmet, and made sense for the driver (no windshield on that VAMP, right?). A few weeks ago, though, I tried the medium size Zap helmet on the head, and it worked out okay—so going forward I think I’ll forgo the googles and use this medium size helmet (but I’ll have to live with those big ears exposed). The gloved hand sculpts were just long enough hand pieces to replace those dreaded slit wrist Duke arms—as I was trying to going for a bit more unique arm look from my previous Breaker and Rock ‘n Roll. My limited supply of the improved bare arms could then all go to the Breaker figures set. The gloves also seemed somewhat natural for a driver (cold steering wheel on that VAMP, right?). The lower legs were switched to make him stand a little bit shorter, as he stands a bit taller than I’d hoped when next to Breaker, Stalker, and Snake Eyes. And, in the end, five of the figures end up with the Zap type boots, and five end up with the Snake Eyes type boots—for a nice balance of mold types. There was a little x-acto knife work involved with the vest at the shoulders and the waist, to better accommodate the new head and belt. I l believe that I lowered the head recently, and more than what’s shown in the pics here. The belt was added since now all my O13 had belts. The canteen in the back certainly doesn’t help him fit into the VAMP—but even without the canteen, this figure is a bad fit in there. The gun holster on the Zap belt was cut off because he originally had too many holsters (counting the ones on the vest and original lower leg). But once I switched the lower legs and lost that holster, I wanted yet another holster and used the Breaker/Duke upper right leg one (short supply of Zap belts at the time). GiJoe_O13-7Clutch_2018-0418b by J Perez, on Flickr On my classic o-ring version, I went back and reduced the beard to retroactively match my 25th Classic version. I also painted the belt, as I did with the rest of my o-ring O13 figures. It started with the o-ring desert versions, and spread to my o-ring classic versions one boring weekend. A bottle of 93% alcohol stands ready if I ever regret this decision in the future. The o-ring and comic versions (desert and comic) are basically as released by Hasbro. The desert 25th is a straight repaint of the original release, with swapped gloved hands, helmet from 25th Breaker, and swapped head from wrestler figure CM Punk (an idea stolen straight from Pugsley, and no one else http://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-jo...need-ride.html). This probably shows the large helmet size look I was trying to hide with googles on my classic 25th. I almost went with this head for my classic 25th, but it is still too serious looking for my taste. For the comic version, I went with the Tunnel Rat/Flint arms as a test look for Clutch in those more rolled up sleeves look similar to the original, and tried sanding them down a little. He had a belt, but it was removed and will be replaced with some others I’m testing. I also used the o-ring Comic pack Clutch head for this version, repainting it to tone down the beard to match the comics, and repainting the eyebrows to make him look a lot less angry. This head was another close candidate for the final head of my 25th Classic. Pouring through hundreds of Clutch images and Clutch customs available on the web, it seems that the fully bearded look is the generally acceptable staple look for Clutch in most people’s minds. But personally, I can’t shake the image of Clutch in my own mind as shaped by those early comics. So for my bonus pic, something simple to evoke that image: GiJoe_O13-Clutch-BonusPic1_2018-0601b by J Perez, on Flickr

Man seeing the 25th version in line next to all of your customs is painful! Who at Hasbro thought those little helmets were a good idea? Ugh!
I like the darker green and the bigger helmet w/goggles on your main custom. However, I prefer either your tan Clutch or comic book Clutch head sculpt. The smirk face makes more sense to me to be on the actual comic book custom rather than the main custom, but that's just my opinion. For some strange reason, I am REALLY liking the fact that you gave Clutch that "Thumper" grenade launcher. I've always liked that gun, but with the M203s and now M320s (my Army son had to "school" me that the 203s are kind of obsolete now), Infantry troops don't use the M79s anymore. So, giving it to a vehicle driver actually makes pretty good sense! It's like having a shotgun hanging from the rear windshield of a pick-up truck. Great work! Jason |

Over all a nice looking figure, the only thing is the head...it just screams Tony Shalob's Jeeb's from MIB....of all the 25th customs the "comic pack" head is the best one IMO.

Thanks for the comments guys--I look for any excuse to continue tweaking these guys (short of starting over and switching to the OB-13 torso...maybe someday, a new set...) |

The original file cards were edited versions of Larry's dossiers he made for the comics. So, yeah, I'm sure he's the one that came up with the idea of the M79 for Clutch. I had to go take another look at Clutch's file card because I totally missed it. Plus he has listed an M60, which makes sense because as a vehicle driver he would need to be qualified in a mounted machine gun. Jason |
