Cobra Driver (Abandoned Concept):
Thought I'd photo and share this before he becomes fodder for something else. I was kinda struggling with the whole driver//Stinger driver thing, and was playing with 3 different colors, before settling on the blue for 83 generic driver and grey for 84 desert driver. Usually I have years for things to settle before finalizing, photgraphing then posting. With the red version, I was associating the Stinger Driver more with the HISS and FANG operators--assuming red uniforms and that classic helmet would be for vehicle operators in general at the time (red figures looking good against the black vehicles, too). The figure below used the 3-pack Retaliation shock trooper, repainted a different shade of red to match HISS and FANG drivers. The figure is kind a cool, and almost reminded me of the 25th viper style CLAW operator. But in the end, he didn't pass the group shot squint test. He was too different from any other figure from 82 to 84, and not something I could see retconned back into those early years, in any medium. gCobra_25th_CobraDriver_2015-0805b One thing that did influence all 3 version was the idea of a racecar driver suit, but hoping to not be too obvious or direct with it. That lead to painting up all the pockets and adding a racing stripe to the pant seams (forgot to add on the desert version). And below is a test shot of the blue version with the blue troopers. Testing out his levels of blending in and standing out in the generic set. This shot pretty much sold me on blue as the winner (for now!). gCobra_25th_CobraDriver_2015-0806a |

Man I LOVE that HISS Tank driver! I have a similar custom by simply using the HISS tank driver head and the Night-Viper body, but the shades of red are different. May need to borrow your idea an paint the helmet black!!

So, while thinking of the "Anti-Ace" (Yes, I know Wild Weasel), I was thinking more along the lines of generic "Viper" pilots (because I like the consistency of the "Viper" moniker. Well, if you check out the FILE CARD for the Strato-Viper (Night Raven Pilot), it says that Strato-Vipers are the best of the "Air-Vipers" which make up Air Wing of the Cobra Legion. So, in reality, in 1986 Hasbro created the character of Air-Viper, but it wasn't until 2003 that they actually made an action figure of one! Unless of course the Strato-Viper and Air-Viper share the same uniform, which the 2009 Night Raven pilot IS called an Air-Viper. Just something else to wrap your head around! Jason |

When I was trying to put together a generic rattler pilot, i put this together for myself, shots from the comic and cartoons
I ended up with the red and black wild weasel as the rattler pilot, and put him in my 1984 set. And I was going to designate him as the lost "Air Viper", but didn't since the whole Viper thing was suppose to happen later, around 1986 and later. I like to think as the AVAC as just being a repaint of the Air Viper, based on what was on the avac's file card, with the black uniform of the 50th set being the standard Air Viper. Or switching them. I never got that 50th full set, the 1986 set already has two pilots, so AVAC in my set is simply The Air Viper (no advanced corp) to bring it all together. Also, Jason, I really like you Hiss driver rebuild. At the time of this thread, I was working on similar updates using red night vipers. The problem was the legs were too tall standing next to the other troops, and in cockpits, so i never went thru with the builds. Seeing yours is great!

Some newer group shots, while this thread has been resurfaced
gCobra_25th_83-ZZ_2018-0226c by J Perez, on Flickr This is a condensed 82-83 group shot, using my top shelf Bludd and Destro. Cobra guard instead of Cobra Trooper, to show the new bare hands, and help tie in with the other comic inspired figures. We end up with 3 from 82, 3 from 83, and 3 from the comics. gCobra_25th_86-83_2018-0303a by J Perez, on Flickr This expands my original 9 for 1983 to 13, to fill out the shelf, with a few tweak studies of previous troopers. My original arctic trooper's lighter blue was based on the 7pack artic set, but I wanted test one closer to the cartoon colors. The extra diver may eventually get repainted to a two-tone red to also get closer to the cartoon version. One of each will be assigned as a squad leader (or "officer", to stay Hasbro consistent). The extra blueshirts have the same webgear as my 1984 jungle and desert troopers, tie into those later figures. This set I thought I had figured out when I first posted, but was happy to find tweaks along the way, especially tying it in to 82 before and 84 later.

So, you're probably correct that the A.V.A.C. uniform represents the standard Air-Viper, which makes better sense with the parachute rig. Thanks for that pic, I'll be studying it for a while! Jason |
