These are amazing! I'm REALLY curious how you applied the Cobra Sigil to the characters? Are they hand painted? They look flawless!

I’ve fallen behind on some figures and photos this month due to job work overload. I’ve got so much work to do in the next week. But I’ve gotten a little obsessed with doing some studies with Joe figures using that classic explosion background. Here are some more of these I did this weekend, looking to recreate the 1982 Cobra pics and poses as the next step.
gCobra_25th_82-3p1_2018-1229ab by J Perez, on Flickr • Previous photos was taken using the background image physically displayed on my Samsung Tab S tablet. The background image and colors came out great, but had trouble controlling glare and reflection off the screen (used higher contrast post-processing to minimize reflections) • For these newer pics, I used a color copy print of the image. Glare was still a bit of a problem because the high bond paper had some sheen to it (as well as some ink streaking). Also the orange-red wasn’t as deep as previous pics. Finally I had less instant control on the size of the explosion (the pictures work better when the white area of the backgrounds can be minimized). • The biggest thing tested with this setup was trying to get more dynamic posing matching the vintage—without having to CG mask anything out or have any visible stands. PhotoGrid_1546201160828 by J Perez, on Flickr • Lighting and shadowing was different from the originals—I did not try to match with this photo set. I opted for side and top white lighting, with minor reflected lighting in the front to reduce shadowing in the front. Original card art had major lighting up front, and warm backlighting of the “explosion”. Future final photos may try to mimic the original art’s lighting to complete the recreation. • For the Officer, the original idea was to take the photo as shown and mirror it to match original’s orientation. Instead, I decided to flip keep the photo unflipped, and flip the original image to match. • The image of the Officer original art used was from this blog: http://medusawolf.blogspot.com/2013/...r-garrido.html. Strangely, the cobra chest logo is red instead of silver, matching my version. • I couldn’t fully recreate the sinister head haunched look of the original art for these bad boys as much as I really wanted to, without double jointed necks (which are included in Mafex figures and starting to show up more in the Star Wars Black Series, so these may be standard if/when the 6” G.I. Joe figures start to roll in). gCobra_25th_82-3p1_2018-1229e by J Perez, on Flickr • The third picture uses a “cartoon” fliter and hue adjustment to the original photo versions. I was going for an illustrated graphic inked version of the shot, with some accurate but slightly off coloring. Attempts with some apps to recreate the Hector Garrido style weren’t working out, so I went with a different illustration style. • The more dynamic poses where achieved by using a Medicom Mafex figure stand with clip. A small slot was cut into the background image and board. The stand’s peg to the clip pokes through the background image a board, with the clip attached to the front side, directly hidden behind figure. (see attached thumbnail for back and front of backboard setup). • The figure is further stabilized by use of small earth magnets in the figure’s foot peg hole, and magnetic mat strips used on the stage. The base grip was pretty weak but just enough to get the pose. • To avoid clipping the bottom of the explosion image, the image page was rolled from the backboard to the stage floor over the magnetic mat. gCobra_25th_82-xTrooper1_2018-1229a by J Perez, on Flickr gCobra_25th_82-xOfficer1_2018-1229a by J Perez, on Flickr gCobra_25th_82-xCommander1_2018-1229a by J Perez, on Flickr Yah it’s helped me with my own work.

Kidding. All here are original factory tampo placements, as they came when bought. If they have a left arm sigil, that's POC/30th Trooper, not a Dollar General figure. The pictures from 2017 had the 2 normal troopers initially from Dollar General figures. At some point, I got a few more cheaper (~$10 POC/30th versions), and switched up figures so the normal troopers would have the arm sigils (and have the earthier blue without repaint). I added a Bad Mother Customs waterslide, gold, to Baroness, which might not be seen in photos of this thread. For the hooded Commander, I painted around the chest symbol and in the space straight down the middle--not too noticeable unless you're looking for it, and zooming in super close. I kept my officer with the red chest logo, a depature from the Hasbro figures. This was my own design choice, as I liked the consisent red logo for all figures of this set--including the highest officer being the Commander. I figured I'd make up the silver in the webbing, mask, and kneepads so that the silver logo would not be missed too much. Regarding custom applications of Cobra sigils, I see you've started a separate thread, so I'll respond in that thread. And regarding the blueshirt figure build, there are about 10 tweaks I always check/do before using them for the various figures of my Cobra sets, ranging from easy to not so easy, for better display of this figure build. I'll be posting that in the next few weeks in the general customizing section. Welcome to the forum threads, Blueshirt! |

Thank you. I really enjoy the process as much as the finished products--hence all the write-ups and occasional behind the scenes. I hope I don't annoy others too much with all the extra info.
So for all the O13 figures of this set and thread, all were carefully hand-painted. Kidding. All here are original factory tampo placements, as they came when bought. Seeing these threads resurfacing [http://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-jo...-officers.html, http://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-jo...a-troops.html]] reminded me of an update I wanted to try to my “Cobra Guards” from post #24. Instead of toning down the yellow webgear to a leather tan as I had done, maybe a more appropriate realistic translation of the color would be…gold? This figure was meant to represent a cleaner, showier outfit appropriate as parade and rally togs. I was afraid it might be too garish, but here it is on the right next to my original tan repaint:
gCobra_25th_82-CobraGuard_2019-0714aa by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr Webgear and other accessories first painted with Citadel Bathasar Gold (a very deep orange bronze hue), then layered with Citadel Burnished Gold (a very yellow but still metallic gold). The originally idea was to stay with the darker initial base alone, but seemed too deviant at this time. The final product? Not much change when viewed through photos, though more apparent in real life. I was worried that the homage to the Marvel Comic color scheme would be lost. But it actually works better given that weird shade of blue used for the Dollar General figures. It’s got more pop than the other set figures, but I think I will acclimate. In the end, not really a big change—but I liked how the photo came out. No post-processing with this one: I think I found my Golden Hour and time of year. I should mention that, like on all my CT’s, head socket and redrilled and refilled closer to the face so the head sits better on the torso and that lurching neck. Other small tweaks made to help this figure build’s standing pose. |

I like that you swapped weapons and have the AK to the trooper and the SVD to the officer. Even as a kid that bothered me and seemed like it should have been the other way around.

The rifle switch "revisionist history" has to rankle some, and I understand that. For me, it's like when painter Alex Ross jams Plastic Man and Shazam (Captain Marvel to old-timers) into his 80's Satellite Justice League pictures. It makes sense, and those two probably should have been in the League at that time, but seeing it just makes me cringe. I didn't have Cobra Troopers or Officers as a kid, so it doesn't bother me in the slightest. |

Thanks man. You should know that I am a really big fan of your Flickr photo stream as well. I'm a non-completist collector of Marvel Legends. I no longer get Star Wars Vintage collection but your pics otherwise tempt me otherwise. I never got any MOTUC, but I love Four Horsemen. Your albums of these are my virtual collection, your pics rival those of the Fwoosh.
Yes, this may have been discussed previously (but maybe on Flickr?). I'm impressed that it bothered you as a kid. For me, it was only with time that switching the rifles made absolute sense, and my collection would reflect this. I maintain that someone at Hasbro knew which rifle should belong to who, but someone else thought that the bigger and cooler looking one should belong the officer. Note that I use a bigger SVD mold from Winter Soldier (but may be too too big). The rifle switch "revisionist history" has to rankle some, and I understand that. For me, it's like when painter Alex Ross jams Plastic Man and Shazam (Captain Marvel to old-timers) into his 80's Satellite Justice League pictures.
