My word those are sweet! I love the color scheme. I also love how you incorporated the TRU packaging. Great work as always.

Thanks. Weird thing is that I don't know if I love customizing troopers per se myself, when I really think about it. Mostly has to do with my display shelves being beyond full capacity. But I can't help taking an idea (a concept, a fix, and alternative) and going the full distance on it (including the photos).

Shoulders and elbows only, not had knee problems so far. I can't seem to find a happy medium of either under trimming/sanding and having rub, or over trimming/dremeling and making it look awful/hacked up. I mean they are all find till they are moved, then they chip. All tips are appreciated, yours look amazing.
To start, personally I never use my dremel for any type of figure surface work--only for head peg drill out (which I do quite a lot). First, I might do a test of arm performance against rub. I'll slap a coat of light coat of paint on the joint, wait less than a minute, then start moving the arm back and forth--to see the extent of the problem. Sometimes, the test is being lazy and painting the figure without joint paint rub paint, and paying a penalty for it soon after (but waiting to fix when I've got the time and the right mindset). Second, I'll remove the lower arms from the upper arms by heating up the arms (for me blow dryer, 20-30 secs at high), then pull out while twisting and slightly bending. At the shoulder, I rotate and bend the upper arm back down, so that the underside of the arms is exposed. In this position, we have better access to the bit of the joint that is most vunerable to rub, where the joint usually tucks under and into the lower arm piece. I will take my exacto knife and start whittling that joint down, by carving very thin layers trying to follow the curvature of the round joint piece. I know I won't get full arcs, so I work in medium arcs, then try to blend separate arcs where they meet for a better but rough circular shape. The cutting doesn't have to be perfect--can finish out with the sanding. Also, don't be too afraid about slicing down the arm piece next to the joint piece at this position, since it is the bottom side of the arm, typically unexposed. Sanding is done with sanding sticks, similar to these: https://www.amazon.com/Squadron-Prod...s%2C169&sr=8-3, but I get my Fine 240 grit from my local hobby store. I'll take the 240 grit and sand down, working it 6 different angles (up, diagonal, sideways, opposites) for better uniformity. Then I'll take an extra fine grit (in my case an extra fine sanding block) and repeat for a smooth round finish. Rotate the arm around, and flip, and repeat at above for the other side of the arm. For this side of the arm, more attention is given at the top of the joint, where it slides into and under the torso. After the cutting and shaving, need to intensely wash the pieces under soap and water. Rotate that arm joint back and forth under the running water to get rid of any crud inside, which might accumulate later and cause rub. After washing, let dry or wipe dry. Then test again with light layer of paint (emphasis light thin layer, don't try to get it all in one coating, and don't let any paint run inside joint where it could accumulate and dry up and cause rub later). If rub occurs, repeat steps above (hopefully only needed at smaller concentrated areas). If no rub, rotate the arm and repeat for the opposite side of the joint. If good so fare, then apply another light layer, wait a few seconds then test. Repeat until you've got just enough layers that look good. The process is similar for the elbows. Extend joint to farthest point one way, do the work, then extend the other. Flipping between extents of the joint is also a good test of the paint rub each time, to save time overall. I hope this is helpful. Good luck! |

COBRA COMMANDER V1
gCobra_25th_82-CobraCommander_2019-1113ai by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr This one was on a to do list for a few months, completed a few weeks ago. I had the parts for quite a while, but was holding off due to concerns I had with trying to paint match (or completely repaint) the light blue, likely in paint brands vunerable to paint wear/rub . In the end the blue was in fact repainted all over, but with a blended blue that matches very closely to the figure’s original plastic (blend of Vallejo Dark Blue & Andrea Blue). This figure basically follows the same build and bits as my previous hooded commander, both inspired by Hisstanker's Azrael13's Atkins Design CC custom (but without holster or paint wash). Lower legs from 2005 DVD Battles Pack Major Blood. Lapels and ceremonial cords for Dollar General CC. Chest strap also from DG CC, glued to upper torso only. gCobra_25th_82-CobraCommander_2019-1115da by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr Below is a study and check with other versions in my collection (before final tweaks were added). Left to Right: 2007 25th, 2012 Ultimate, 1983 V1.5 (bad silver sharpie repainted mask from when I was young), 2019 (lastest custom version), 2008 DVD Battles Pack (v36). I repainted the necks from the light blue to black to match the original figures and to get more black apps onto the figures. Unfortunately for this pic, I don't own the Vala version from the 2017 Missile Command set for side-by-side comparison, which would be interesting to see. gCobra_25th_82-CobraCommander_2019-1108ab by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr Below are composites with the 2012 release (longtime stand-in for this Cobra O13 set), and with my 2019 Hooded Commander (as well as with that version's alternate battle mask head). Can't pick a favorite between the two--I'm glad I have two different 13-figure sets which accommodate both. gCobra_25th_82-CobraCommander_2019-1115ea by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr Finally, I wanted to take as shot showing how this new figure looks in my overall Cobra shelf display, but lighting for photos is really bad in that room. Below is a small recreation of the setup in my photobox. gCobra_25th_82-CobraCommander_2019-1113ab by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr With the better lighting control for shades and highlights, I am allowed to run the photo above through various photo app filters for the final picture below (similar to first picture, uncropped): gCobra_25th_82-CobraCommander_2019-1113ag by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr

Love the boots.
Could you do the 50th black version with tall red boots?

The black with red gloves and shoes/boots may have sounded slick on paper, but didn't work in practice. Maybe a gun metal grey or silver instead of red, but that wouldn't pop. But...invert the black and red? That could be slick. Like militarily awesomely slick... |

As you know, I am a huge fan of your work.
Looking at those Cobra Commanders side by side made me realize though, we have yet, though, to get a true modern adaptation of the ARAH figure. The 50th figure is great, but it took seeing it next to the vintage ARAH figure to see the difference. I seriously doubt Hasbro would put the effort to go beyond the quality of the 50th sculpt, but even the paint job is more "Sunbow" Cobra Commander. I love the addition of the chest sling/belt to match your previous custom. This has more of a Marvel comics Cobra Commander feel to it. Great work Jason |

Would still love to see you make the unnamed bald Cobra Officer from Issue 1.
