I definitely agree with this. I get skittish about showing my work, because there are some great customizers here. Lots of good work, and I feel like mine won't measure up. But when I'm done with one, I'll display it next to either the original ARAH or the character that I'm making a custom of, and if it looks pretty good next to the "store bought" ones, then I'm pretty happy.

I love "patrolling" the tank as well as ebay to look at ideas for customs. Even if you don't like the custom that someone else does, it doesn't mean that you can't learn from it also.

You know I learned a LOT from Jin Saotome back in the day. I was really jealous at first, but I decided that was really childish and worked on improving instead of being a dick. I am by no means as good as some folks but I try to better myself and learn from my mistakes. I have been making customs for around 6 years now and I can actually see a difference from when I started to now.

Personally, I like to hear from BOTH sides of the fence - the people who like my work and the ones who don't. I like to hear from people who think I should have done something differently, or that think I could have done better. It makes me work harder next time. Sure all of the "Wow that looks awesome" and "Great work" posts are cool but I would rather read 2 posts from people who ask questions or tell me how I could make a better figure than 4 pages of "Awesome!!" comments. But maybe that's just me.
As for the silent treatment... yeah, I subscribe to that one too, unless it's someone that I "know" (and I put " " around that because I don't know anybody here, really, but you can get a feel for people and how they will respond to criticisms), and then I might make a comment that's posed in a constructive way to suggest how I might have made something differently. Or ask why something was done the way it was. I would never just come right out and say "Wow, that sucks"... those are the figures I don't comment on (j/k before anybody get's their panties in a wad). That said, you can't please everyone all the time. Recently I made a Marvel Universe Venom that I thought came out OK but got pretty bad responses where I posted it. Did that bother me? Nope. People are entitled to their opinions, even if they are wrong :P My challenge to anyone that bad mouths my figures is simple - do it better. Put up, or shut up. That's not to say that I think anything I make is the ultimate custom piece or anything like that. There are a TON of people that do amazing work here that I don't think my work can stand next to.

I pretty much agree with Starwarsgeek.
I feel that criticism is the only way to get better. Having done artwork for the larger part of my life and professionally for some time now, I got used to it. I learned early on not to mind it and try to see how it can help me get better. I definitely like to have one person who gives me an honest opinion and some criticism in addition to the ones who leave praise. Don't get me wrong, the praise is nice, but criticism helps me grow. Having said all that, things like: "That sucks" and such are not helpful. If you think it sucks, tell me why. SWG: Where did you post that Venom? I'd like to see it. ~Eric |
