You got the gold bands on Steeler's arms, using the natural sculpt! That's fantastic! I want to switch the upper arms on my version now, just to get that detail, if I can find the fodder.
Your MOBAT is an excellent upgrade, while still feeling like an early precursor to the Mauler. I wondering if you see this version of the MOBAT with a 3-man crew rather than a single. If a 3-man crew, which early Joes make up the crew? The MTF figure makes a nice Clutch, especially with your holster rig. And the head is better than the 25th one for the full bear look. A lot less pissed off looking. |

My Armor Division/Tank Crew is as follows: Tank Commander: STEELER Tank Driver: RAMPAGE (I like the Rampage code name better than Heavy Metal) Tank Gunner: THUNDER Tank Loader: TOLLBOOTH I have all four of these customs completed, just need to take the time to photo and upload the rest. And with these four customs, I wanted a little consistency to my "Armor Division" so each character utilizes the same Resolute-style legs. If Elite Force ever releases that "split-turret" tank in green, then I'll replace this World Peacekeepers tank with the "split-turret" version. Thanks also on Clutch. Yeah, I like the MTF "Trooper" head the best except for the lighter skin tone. Jason |

I love your MOBAT and agree it really feels like a generation one mauler. Clutch and Steeler are fantastic.

Next up for my "Class of 1984" and the next member of my Armor Division/Tank Crew is THUNDER (cue the AC/DC music - "You've been Thunderstruck!"
Thunder is another one of those figures I never had as a kid. So, whereas I think he is an important part of the team -- in my Joeverse, he serves primarily as the tank gunner -- he's not a character I am really invested in. Also, like Steeler, I think what really makes a "Thunder" custom is having the vintage-style helmet/headset. The closest I had in my bag of goodies was the "tanker" helmet from Avac's Lab. However, as soon as Coby restocks his resin cast Thunder helmet set, I'm going to swap this out. This custom is a simple parts swap and paint. Each of my Armor Division/Tank Crew utilizes the Resolute-style pants. These legs are from a Duke figure. I painted them black and added the large, black pockets from MTF. This last picture shows a couple of examples of what might have inspired the design for the Slugger. I own an Encyclopedia of Military Weapons which was printed in the early 1980s. The body and wheel design looks similar to a Cadillac Gage V-300 Commando armoured personnel carrier, while the cannon and rear rake resemble an M110 203mm Self-Propelled Howitzer. There is an entire thread on the real-life inspiration of GIJoe vehicles. I bought the Slugger from a local collector and it came with the vintage Canadian sticker applied. So, now I'm kind of torn between keeping the vintage Canadian stickers or applying repro (U.S.) stickers. Thanks for looking, again, I greatly appreciate any and all comments, critiques and questions. Jason |

Adding pics from my "Blue Shirt Legion" Project to my main thread:
I love the "Viper" code names but prefer the "blue shirt" style troopers. I think "Viper" is a much better code name than "the enemy." I think Hama was having writer's block on these. I wanted to make a more accurate POC/50th style version of the 1983/84 "Cobra" action figure. I toyed around with the idea of making a removable pistol/holster on the web gear but decided against it. This is basically a Dollar General blue Cobra with the pocket and knife relocated to mimic the 1983/84 ARAH Cobra figure. I also added a custom resin cast garrote and the two bullets to the figure's arms. The next figure has also previously been displayed but now has a slight update. So, I present the "Viper Officer." I used a DG blue Cobra figure as the base with a POC Cobra head. Then removed the holster & pocket and relocated the knife sheath to the left leg. Using some nail polish remover, I erased the red Cobra logo and replaced it with a white Cobra logo sticker from TFKingdom. The main update from my previous presentation is the helmet. I had tried to customize a helmet with raised "officer's" chevron and it just did not look that great. This helmet is a custom from fellow Tanker (paraviper). It is basically the POC/50th/DG helmet with a raised chevron. The blue dye he uses is an almost perfect match to the /DG blue Cobras. I bought about 6 or 7 of these helmets from him. So, I highly recommend them. Next up is a spin on the Cobra Officer - the "Comic Book" Viper Officer. I like to call this one "Marvel-esque" since the color scheme reflects a more "comic book-like" style of action figure. Of course, Hasbro has released some "Comic" book 25th version "blue shirts." I think a modern POC/50th "comic" book figure would be easy to produce. And then, the last one is the "Cartoon" or "Sun Bow-esque" Viper Officer based on the Cobra Officer's appearance in the Sun Bow cartoons. Another easy parts/accessory swap and some repainting. The next update to my "Blue Shirt Legion" is the HEAT-Viper (High Explosive Anti-Tank). This guy represents the "Zap" of the Cobra Legion. I love the 25th Cobra Bazooka Trooper helmet and web gear and really wanted a POC/50th update to this figure.
I prefer the "Bazooka Trooper" look much more than the yellow HEAT-Viper with that funky helmet. But again, being a fan since 1982, I fall into the "blue shirt" fan club over all other Cobra troops. The three main customs with this figure are (1) repainting the mask red (Citadel Evil Sunz Scarlet), (2) heating and gluing the web gear in place, and (3) making the netted helmet. In hindsight, I wish I would have cut the net shorter to hide the seam, but I'm OK with how the helmet turned out. I purchased this cool RPG backpack from Daremos Dojo that I'll be putting with this figure. This is probably my favorite of all my "Blue Shirt Legion" Customs. First on the list is the FLAK-VIPER!! This guy represents the "Anti-Grand Slam" of the Cobra Legion. Since Grand Slam saw double-duty as an action figure, first as a Laser Artillery Soldier then as a Laser Jet Pack Soldier, I decided our little Flak-Viper would also pull some double-duty! The Flak-Viper's primary function is as an Anti-Aircraft trooper, firing missiles at any incoming enemy aircraft. The Flak-Viper's secondary function is more of an aerial attack anti-aircraft trooper. Instead of giving him the blue JUMP pack, I decided to go with Cobra's other, much cooler, individual aerial device - THE CLAW! (cue the Toy Story soundbite). This custom is a basic parts swap and some repainting to the upper body. The upper body is a Skydive v. 3 figure with the legs and hands from a Dollar General blue Cobra. I painted the blue parts of the upper body with Citadel Kantor Blue to better match the DG blue Cobra legs. The Skydive torso is the same as the Data-Viper from whom I borrowed the chest rig and rocket launchers. This also gives the figure kind of a "flight suit" look that works with piloting the CLAW. The figure is topped off with a 25th Cobra Air Trooper head and masked helmet with an Invasion Trooper parachute rig - you know, for those Sun Bow explosions where he has to parachute to safety. Next on the list is the Flak-Viper's little brother FRAG-VIPER!! The original ARAH Frag-Viper was released in 1989. I don't know if it's just a coincidence or was Hasbro's marketing scheme, but to me, the original Frag-Viper bears a remarkable resemblance to the Predator from the 1987 film Predator. Given that in 1988 (just one year after Predator's release) Hasbro also produced a grenadier (Hard Ball) and heavy-cam (Repeater) troopers, I just can't help but think that Hasbro was riding on the coattails of the success of Predator. For my Frag-Viper, I got completely away from the Predator-looking head and yellow-brown tights with that goofy looking "Scoop Ball" weapon. Yes, I've taken the Frag-Viper back to the basics; back to the most popular Cobra design of all -- the "blue shirt!" Again, this is another simple parts swap and repaint. I used a POC/50th Viper upper body with the head, helmet, and hands of a POC/50th Cobra trooper standing with the legs from the 50th 3pk female Cobra Officer (the ones with the snazzy explosive attachment). So, between a multi-shot grenade launcher, a couple of grenades on the web gear, and some explosives attached to the leg; this Frag-Viper has got your indirect artillery and demolitions covered!! And then, last but not least (Yo! Eazy's no sell-out! wait what?) let's throw a little mix into the color palette with the addition of the Cobra Shock-Viper. The Shock-Viper may not be as familiar to Joe Fans as other "Viper" specialties because the figure was only released in 2002. Using the "anti-Joe" mentality to this custom, this is very much the "Anti-Blowtorch" of the Cobra Legion. Instead of an actual "blue shirt," I thought the "red shirt" Retaliation Invasion Trooper represents the perfect base for a Flamethrower Trooper. To match the Red & Grey color scheme I swapped out the web gear with the grey Arctic Viper vest. I removed the grenades because I'm not sure how well grenades would hold up while shooting a flamethrower! Replaced the grenades with an MTF knife & sheath. For the head and helmet, I went with a 25th Cobra Air Trooper breathing mask helmet. I painted the helmet and backpack red (Citadel Evil Sunz Scarlet) to better match the red Invasion Trooper body. Then gave each the helmet, vest and backpack a wash in dark grey to tone the brightness down to better match the figure. On a humorous side, YES! I realize the "flamethrower" is actually a water gun (which is kind of ironic), but I like the way it looks over the Charbroil/Blowtorch flamethrower. Plus the stubby design makes it easier for the figure to hold. I've noticed the Destro's spell checker wasn't working the day he typed this file card! D'oh! So "Assault" is a little discombobulated! LOL! Jason |

This post is really an update to three figures which have previously been posted in my main thread.
My custom Sand-Viper is a POC/50th update to the Cobra Desert Specialist Officer (Cobra Officer v. 8) that was released in the "Extreme Conditions: Desert Assualt Squad" in 2008. This is a Retaliation Mouse upper body with Retaliation Dojo (3pk) Beach Head legs. I gave the figure a wash to dirty him up and help blend the upper body with the legs. The helmet is a paraviper custom that I painted to match the web gear. This is an update to my Motor-Viper (Stinger Driver). I wasn't happy with the Vortious Custom resin cast Shocktrooper legs/knees. I changed out the legs with those from Retaliation Firefly v. 27 (like what I did for the Motor-Viper Officer -- see below). Whenever Hasbro gets back on board producing figures the Stinger Driver is definitely a character that needs a POC/50th style update. ARAH 1984 Stinger Drivers are listed as Officers [Grade: O4 (or equivalent)], but I just didn't see Officers actually driving the Stingers. So, I decided to rank down the original Stinger Driver uniform to an NCO and create a variant for a Motor-Viper Officer. The two updates to the original custom are: (1) changed the head from a Red Fang Ninja (with dark red mask) to a POC Cobra head (with black mask) and (2) changed the web gear from the Shocktrooper vest to a Bazooka Trooper web gear (one of my favorites). Like with the HEAT-Viper, I heated the web gear and glued it to the chest piece to keep it from riding up high on the collar. Then heated the rest of the web gear, stretched it into place on the back and glued the back straps in place. Jason |
