Hello Hisstankers. Been lurking around here forever, and will be jumping into the customizing game very shortly. This seems to be one of the most active forums I can find, and there is some amazing customizers here.
With that said, when you're trying to make a unique custom, how important is it that you disguise the original parts? Do you think it detracts from a custom when you can easily see what parts are used in it? Is it difficult to see a new, creative, original, unique character as a new character when you can clearly see it's a "Duke" head, or Snake Eyes mask? Or is it easy to look past those things, and see the character as something new, and unique? Just curious as to how you all view things like this. |

As long as the part looks good and fits well with the new sculpt, don't worry about it. If you are going to get into customizing remember this, ANYTHING GOES! There is no rules. Every customizer puts their own unique take on the figure. Look up custom Zandar, Zarana and Thrasher and you will find numerous variations.

I try and use Star Wars or non-Joe heads if at all possible to avoid the 'same-guy-in-different-clothes' look.

Is it difficult to see a new, creative, original, unique character as a new character when you can clearly see it's a "Duke" head, or Snake Eyes mask? Or is it easy to look past those things, and see the character as something new, and unique? But it depends. For example, we have a lot of different charcters (ARAH and 25th) with the same parts, yet you don't see them as the same guy. But i must admit some parts are too particular; while SE goggle-mask is quite generic, the knight-visor isn't. Some heads are better than others; while most people hate the O-Face Duke, it's actually very good, and with a change of colour or even a helmet, can be many charcters. Overall, i thin that the most difficult to recognize parts, the more custom it is. Check GI Guppy's customs...he did a Stalker, which we already have, but he resculpted almost everything. Tho it uses the base body, it is a new figure, a real custom. personally, i like to mix a lot of parts. I resculpt faces to make them look different, cut pieces from different figures, but always kept the articulation style, that's very characteristic of Joes

Maybe I'll just set my custom universe in the 70's and just sculpt mustaches on everyone. That'll make 'em different! I'm also finding, a lil sculpty goes a long way. Building up some cheekbones, resculpting a jaw, adding on a lil tech device or grenades to an arm. Soft, Rubbery goods certainly help with that. |

Most of the time, I just try to make the parts look like the custom I'm making. I'll use multiple parts and not even worry too much. Case in point, both my Cutter and Breaker customs use a Duke head:
Here's another one, Both Clutch and Breaker in Diving Suits using the exact same head |

See! Just gotta adda mustache to everyone. lol jk. But I definitely agree. That's a great creative use. And to me, quite honestly, when you can creatively use the parts available, those are some of the best customs.
And are you seriously so crazy that you painted not one, but TWO figures in that much yellow? That's gotta be a few billion coats right there. Looks awesome though! |

Just curious as to how you all view things like this. 10 years ago customs consisted of simple repaints, but nowadays there are so many talented people doing it. There are guys on he-man.org sculpting figures from scratch and then casting them. It's amazing how much the hobby has evolved, or perhaps just attracted more talented people. I myself am pretty creative at using existing parts to repaint and create a new character or one that didn't have a figure made, but my sculpting skills are quite limited. Mathius |
