Jedi_Master_Ben: As far as the 3D printing process I was talking about using Shapeways to make a copy. This would be if you wanted one copy or if you wanted a prototype.
As far as the 3D software there are plugins for Blender that can output any 3D file you need for whatever stage. I totally agree on the skill to use the software though, I've tried, it really is a skill that not anyone can just learn without a ton of determination. The 3D scanning however only needs to be done once by one person, edited into a 'blank', and put online for whoever wants to alter. Anyone here have the skill to do that for the rest of us? I knew about cutting the mold from metal, every year in White Dwarf they have an article about how their molds are made, but usually companies that do this need the digital file and the prototype, hence the need for shapeways. It seems silly to have a physical prototype because most things are done on computer now a days. Logically you need the mold to make the physical part, but to get that part you still need a prototype. The question is like you said do you want to make 1 or 5000, there is really nothing in between. If you only want one then Shapeways would be the way to go, but if you want to sell them you need to plan on selling 5000 to pay for the mold. It does seem impractical to go the 5000 rout, but digital files for others to make a personal copy would be great. I'm reading more up on it, talking about it in forums helps a lot. This is like using Linux, I ask a question and I get suggestions, terminology to search with, and links to places. Technology is also changing all the time, so methods have to be updated and re-evaluated. |
