I like the red and black redeco of this figure, but the ruby slippers are too "over the top". I can't imagine any iteration of the character- in comics, cartoon or otherwise who would wear the red shoes. I wanted to change out the factory red shoes for black ones which other people could easily do themselves and I decided on two options.
The first- and easiest was to swap the lower legs and feet with the lower legs and feet of ROC Cobra Commander. This made the figure shorter (he fits in scale better with other figures)and no painting was necessary to match the parts. Just for variety, I added the ROC CC's coat to this figure (after stripping the blue paint from the interior of the coat). The second option was to remove the factory red paint from the shoes, then dye them (to add back color and finish)and the red ankle swivel and peg with black Rit dye. Both options were quick and easy. |

Nice!!! Can you dye the entire lower leg to get the ankle black too? I've never worked with dye before.

Yes, since the lower leg is already black the color isn't effected by the dye. I took apart the shoes and lower legs and placed them into a ladel which I then lowered into a pan of hot water and Rit dye. I use a ladel to keep the parts together (so I'm fishing through the pan trying to find them) and also to keep them from resting on the bottom of the pan which can get hot. I let these dye for over an hour (replacing the water periodically as it evaporated) and rotated the red swivel peg so that all sides of it were exposed to the dye.

That's my favorite too. The trench coat sets him apart and gives him some style IMO.
