TO: Gen. Abernathy
FROM: LT O'Hara Hawk- I've been trying to compile as much background info as possible on our new assignment, COBRA. Unfortunately, I've been hitting brick walls at every turn. Langley has been less than helpful, and insists that the information I've requested is "Not Relevant" to our current assignment. Here's the limited info I've been able to gather: -The original COBRA Command was formed in the early 1970's and is believed to be an splinter group of the SECRET EMPIRE. -The leader of the group went by the nomme de guerre "General Zadar". his second in command was a woman known as "Colonel Varna". The rest of the leadership was a body known as the COBRA Council. - The group had stockpiled an impressive amount of military hardware, including tanks, fighter jets, and an impressive air defense network, on South Ataria Island, an island in international waters, just south of the Bonin islands. - The groups only known terrorist action was the destruction of a KH series spy satellite. - The groups entire compound on S. Ataria was destroyed, under mysterious circumstances, immediately following the satellite's shoot down. - Only two members are believed to have survived. Intelligence believes them to be the founders of the current COBRA organization known as "Cobra Commander" and "Scrap Iron". That's all the info I could gather from official channels. The info on the South Ataria incident was so heavily redacted as to be almost unreadable. Most of that info comes from the crew of the oceanographic research vessel "Calico". Further digging on the "Calico" seemed to imply some connection to the agency's old "Adventure Team" program, and you know how tight those files are locked up. Thing I could turn up besides the ship's name was a blurry photo of the ship's crew on the deck of the ship with what seems like some sort of large lizard. COBRA Trooper Colonel Varna General Zadar

I like this, where is this story from? Is it like some alternate universe? I really like it.

It's from the old '70s Godzilla animated series. It featured a group of blue-clad terrorists called "COBRA".

Nice work! Cobra first appeared in the Godzilla cartoon and they were destroyed by the Radioactive Megabeast! I only found one image on youtube of this cartoon episode but was a remix video. Those customs are perfect and I love how you worked them into the storyline. Wonder if Hasbro used the Godzilla Cobra organization as their inspiration for GI Joe Cobra organization.

This is awesome. I like the creativity with these. Did you paint the faces? I'm no good at that

Except for touching up Zadar's beard, I did not paint the faces. His head is from a Star Wars Bail Organa figure, and it had to sand down his Van Dyke into a Fu Manchu. I will paint a face if I have to, but I try to avoid it.

I think I want to watch this show now. I'm not a Joe comic expert but I thought cobra was inspired by Marvel's hydra organization, being them that published the book back in the 80's and all that
They certainly look like a cross between hydra and A.I.M. |

It's a tough one to find. I had to torrent this episode, as it's not on the DVD set they put out nor among the episodes on Hulu. If I have some time, maybe I'll post some screencaps.

I'm not sure there was any direct influence from this on GI Joe. Given the lines original Nick Fury/SHIELD inspiration, HYDRA is the more likely model for COBRA than the godzilla episode. But my joes always existed in the Marvel Universe anyway (I had all the Mego pocket heroes and secret wars figures as a child), which is why I included that Secret Empire reference.
