I'll be honest with all of you. Sometimes its make me said when my customs had a few response on the forum. Because the first thought I have - like IIIzoeIII said - that I did a shit. On the otherhand I'm guilty, cause I usually sayas how awsome a custom when I really like it as hell. I don't wanna mean with that the others are not - they are...I just can't explain the difference.
Anyway the main thing is - even if these things "hit" you somehow - they should not. We have to realize that the customs we make, in first place, we make them for ourselfs. We are here just to present what we can do and what we have. Sure its a good thing that somebody who making great customs comment on yours saying some good words. But its more like a bonus and not the main goal. My 2 cents) P.S.: Other option why we here - is to share our knowledge and skills with others, so they can do better customs. So..do it just for doing it. This is our hobby, this is how we like to spend our free time. And not for comments or responses. =)

As a newcomer to this,I have been looking around a lot to try and familiarise myself with the site and how it works.
The works I've seen so far in the short time I've been here is definitely skill laden and talented as work. I shall endeavour to always comment and offer support as I believe creativity is one of our most important ways to exercise our minds and entertain ourselves and others. Bravo to all those who take the time to post their work here, you are cool!! |

I agree with what has been said. I know that the most important thing is to have fun with the hobby and to be happy with what you create. As they say in Facebook terms, getting "likes" and comments is secondary. With that said however I think all of us as artists do want feedback, discussion and of course praise for anything positive we do. We spend time, thoughts and money making customs and it's natural to want acknowledgement for it.
Let's talk about that for a second. This is just my opinion and it's not directed towards anybody in particular, it's just an observation. I think there is a trend when it comes to customs that get more feedback. Like in any visual medium I have noticed that the artists that take the time to present their work in a more visually appealing manner do get more comments than artists who don't. It doesn't have to be elaborate or expensive. It's just the way it's presented. One picture posts often times get less comments than posts with more pictures. You also see that pictures that have a complimentary backdrop usually get more feedback versus the ones that don't. To paraphrase megamind: "presentation is important". The second thing I think that influences feedback is also subject matter and materials. I have noticed that most customs that are not done with modern era parts or that are not related to G.I. Joe usually get less feedback. There is nothing wrong with having a preference. It's just that I think one must also keep the audience in mind and be aware that some customs might not get much feedback due to them being different to what is the mainstream and not due to bad quality. I guess what I'm saying is that your demographic audience will probably give more feedback to customs that are military fantasy than other genres. Finally there is involvement. I think that inevitably in any community there is the social interaction aspect. As people we are prone to make friends and we should. But let's not forget also about brother tankers who probably would appreciate feedback even if they are not regular commentators on your work. Who knows? It might encourage them to post more feedback on your customs if you do the same. Let's keep the discussion going guys, what are your thoughts? What would you like to see happen? With social media taking up a piece of the customizing scene, sometimes it's good to have a venue like this one. Forums have a bit of a slower pace that also showcase the work longer and is easier to find online. There is always room for improvement Last edited by phantro; 03-23-2015 at 08:12 AM.. |

Yeah, I think for anyone who posts their customs that they worked their asses off on, getting only a handful of replies can be heartbreaking. Most people can appreciate the creativity and hard work that goes into these things, but some members appear to have a very narrow focus like Phantro said...if it isn't specifically Joe-related, or if it covers a character from something they're not familiar with (or even if it's an original creation), some folks seem to just tune it out, which is unfortunate.
And I'm one of the people who welcome ANY feedback, even if it's constructive in nature. Hell, I appreciate it if someone took the time and interest in my custom that they would actually see something that they think might improve it and voice their opinion. Some people might get bent out of shape if someone does that to them, but to me it's fostering a sense of community here and, honestly, it's a big compliment...certainly bigger than just saying "wow, nice one" and leaving it at that. And if you do like a custom, take a second to point out exactly what about it you liked...the paintjob, the sculpt, the parts selection, whatever. It will encourage people to share more and even improve, I think, if people recognize exactly what they did. When IIIzoeIII posted in this very thread that he assumes most of his customs are "shit," I went back and checked out the last few that posted, and they are most asssuredly NOT shit. They're actually pretty damn great, and I'm personally going to make more time to tell people like him so when they post their stuff. Unless their customs REALLY suck, in which case I'm not saying anything. This is true.

I love it when people comment on my customs be it good or bad. I know some of my customs are really 'cheap' compared to other more intense ones though and I understand that's why sometimes people don't comment. I mean, my latest one, the Steel Brigade driver, I spent more time photographing it than actually making the custom...haha.

I keep 99% of my customs to myself. I let a few out with some nudging, but as for posting more..I don't see myself doing much of that, lol. It's good to see people's customs, but unless I'm goofing off,and posting random pics of unfinished figures I rarely feel like taking pics, and posting threads. that's me tho.
I comment occasionally, but ARAH inspired, and PMC customs over&over tend to bore me after a while no matter how good they are done, and I just don't feel like commenting. When the rare custom posts that impresses me I always comment, but it's still rare compared to what's posted daily..maybe I comment a few times a week in this section..I look almost daily tho,lol

I will admit I am extremely guilty of this. I get on the site and may not log in (usually because I'm doing it at work) and just look around at the customs. I will say this...the customizers on this site are very, very good. I will steal at least one good idea a week. I rarely post my owne customs because in reality I know they're not very good. I will say that from now on instead of stealing ideas I can certainly pay for them with a little feedback. If someone has the nerve to put themselves "out there" on a site then I should at least give them some feedback, respectful of course.

I love seeing great customs. That said I don't always post because of the following:
1) A lot of times if I just feel like posting AWESOME or GREAT JOB, it is hard to do because I don't want to be flooding sites with posts, especially ones that don't add to the conversation. 2) I don't really come to hisstank for customs. I more go to Joecustoms for that, so I will forget to look at the customs if I don't see them in the recent posts. 3) I do dios and feel bad that more people don't comment. But, like mentioned above, I believe that I engage in this hobby for me. Comments to me about my work may make me work faster, but they don't drive me to do the work, so I figure most other people are the same. That is to say: everyone wants feedback/praise, but that's not why we're doing the work. |
