Non GI Joe: Gypsy Joes
My wife is a member of our local chapter of the Gypsy Motorcycle Club. Every year, her Chapter hosts a toy run that giveaway toys to special needs children and other needy families. In conjunction with the toy run, they also hold a live auction to raise money for some of the special needs they fulfill at Christmas for needy children at our local pediatric therapy clinic and to raise funds to buy toys for the big toy giveaway. After last year's auction, I decided to make a set of GI Joe members of their motorcycle club. I initially planned to do just one "Gypsy Joe" with a bike, and it grew into the diorama below, with 4 bikers and bikes in a display case with a plaque and an accompanying certificate. The vest are cut in the Gypsy MC style and feature their actual back patch, as well as front patches taken from actual Gypsy vests. None are a direct likeness for any of the club members, but there are definite similarities. It was my hope that this item would bring at least a few hundred dollars at the auction. The members of the club love having unique MC memorabilia, but I had no idea how much they would all want my Gypsy Joe set. I was very proud when my little custom dio ended up as the highest selling item at the auction. The winning bid was $2000! It was unbelievably gratifying to see my work be appreciated so much, and it is awesome to know that the money they raised will be going to brighten the holidays of children in need. Here are my Gypsy Joes, starting with some WIP pics and ending with the finished project.

Non GI Joe: Gypsy Joes part 2
After the success of the Gypsy Joes above at the charity auction, I was approached by the Club to make a second set as a gift for their outgoing Chapter President's 50th birthday. This 3 figure dio consist of the President and two of his closest brothers, one of whom had moved out of state, and the other who was killed in a motorcycle accident about a year and a half ago. It was a major challenge to capture their likenesses in an idealized GI Joe format, as well as to capture their friendship and brotherhood. The vests are exact replicas of each of the 3 guys' vests, with water slides of all of their patches individually recreated and placed on their cuts. It was a difficult project, but it was very well received by everyone in the Club. It was very gratifying to me to be able to build this little plastic memorial to three of my very good friends.

Vehicles: Dreadnok Air and Ground Assault v2
With their role in Cobra's operation dramatically expanded, Zartan approached Cobra Commander with the thought of increasing the Dreadnoks' vehicle firepower. After some persuasion, Cobra Commander relented and allowed the Dreadnoks access to Cobra's motor pool of derelict hulks, prototypes, and captured vehicles. With the help of a couple of off-duty Techno Vipers and some demented Dreadnok innovation, they came up with the following new pieces of the Dreadnok stable of vehicular mayhem.

Vehicle: Iron H.I.S.S.
In addition to MARS Industries' work on developing new vehicles for military sales, and entire division of MARS is dedicated to upgrading tried and true designs to increase capability and utility on an ever-changing battlefield. Enter the Iron H.I.S.S. Project. This new version of the venerable H.I.S.S. hearkens back to the first redesign, the H.I.S.S. II, by utilizing a 2 person cockpit and a lower, flatter silhouette. Crew size and space has been increased throughout, in order to accomodate the vastly increased weapons payload. The cockpit crew now has direct control of 3 underbody miniguns (2 7.62mm and one 20mm). A dismountable scout position on the top is armed with a .50 cal MG in a pintle mount. The standard twin main cannons have now been replaced with an elevating and roatating turret equipped with 4 Anti-Armor/Anti Aircraft hybrid missiles, along with a 40mm cannon mounted coaxially. This turret system allows the H.I.S.S. to employ its main weapons systems while leaving the body of the tank in defilade. A rear systems management post allows unit commanders to keep track of the battlefield via satellite maps and comm links. The Iron H.I.S.S. moves into battle on an updated suspension system, utilizing a multi-link, flexing suspension and longer tracks to increase speed while maintaining maneuverability. The MARS Industries Iron H.I.S.S. is available for government and private purchase immediately...if you can afford it.

Vehicles: Destro's P.A.R.I.A.H.
Introducing Destro's Piloted Advanced Reconnaissance, Insertion and Assault Helicopter, the P.A.R.I.A.H. Armed with dual pulse cannons, a single chin gun, twin 2.75" rocket pods, and dual guided missiles, the P.A.R.I.A.H. is capable of functioning in both a ground support and assault role. By combining advanced low sound signature rotor blades with cutting edge stealth technology and an advanced FLIR system, the P.A.R.I.A.H. can spot targets and identify weak points in defense systems around the globe. Destro is using this first model as his personal transport, but the assembly line is ready to crank out squadrons of these advanced multi-role helicopters...to the highest bidder.

Vehicles: Slaughter's H.A.T.
I'm proud to introduce Slaughter's H.A.T. (Heavy Assault Tank). I wanted an armored assault vehicle for my BBTS Marauders set, and I liked how the Corps! tank had the ridiculously overdone armament that reminded me of a lot of the ARAH vehicles. The coloring needed a serious update, but I wanted to retain a little bit of that cartoon aesthetic. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out.

Vehicles: Steel Brigade Fast Attack Vehicle
This one started life as a PTE military buggy. I wasn't originally going to customize this, but out of the package I realized that the stock paint is crap. They were obviously going for some sort of night camo paint scheme, but it looks like some really crappy overspray. So I decided to paint it up as a signature vehicle for my Steel Brigades. The paint is krylon camo tan, flat black, satin hunt club green, and aqua. Extra accessories are from some other PTE sets I have acquired. I did leave the back bar from the roll cage and machine gun off. The MG doesn't mount in there particularly well, and it doesn't function well with a gunner in the seat. Here it is:

Vehicles: Cobra Rocket Hauler
This was my first custom of any kind. When I saw that TRU had this True Heroes Rocket Hauler on sale for $20 on Black Friday, I picked it up on impulse. Its a nice toy, and it has some great play/display value, but the color scheme leaves a LOT to be desired. With that in mind, I decided to customize it into a custom Cobra chemical rocket hauler. This was my first custom vehicle, but it won't be my last. I learned a lot from it. I need better brushes, and a desk mounted magnifier with a light for the detail work. This definitely isn't up there with some of the pros on here (I'm looking at you, Nath!) but I'm fairly pleased with how it turned out and I had a lot of fun doing it. I wanted to give it a classic Cobra look, so I used Krylon Navy Blue and Model Masters Guards Red spray for the main body work. The detail is done in Model Masters Steel and Flat Black. Stickers are from Cobra Stickers.

Thanks! I only started collecting a few years ago, but I got into it pretty hardcore. Other than motorcycles, this is really my only hobby. It took me a while to start customizing, but that has become one of my favorite aspects of the hobby. I love making my own versions of characters, putting together kitbashes, and making non-Joe customs for people. I've kinda stopped vehicle customs, as I have a lot less display space at my house than I did when I had my whole collection in my office.
