Not to hijack a thread for a very, VERY nice custom (and great masked version, btw), but the handguard makes the most sense and makes it far more practical than a regular lightsaber. The nozzle emitters would protect you from sliding up and cutting your own hand, but I'm sure the blade is still active inside the nozzles on the chance your opponent hits them. Win-win. Trust me, I lightsaber fight with my son all the time with his toy sabers, and the blade always slides right down and nicks your hand.
