The model of a field kitchen was inspired by the ones used by the extinct East German army. I can't say that I liked that army, but after reunification of Germany its field kitchens were sold and today hundreds of clubs have one. Consequently you can find lots of pictures of these field kitchens on the Internet. Besides, they simply looked good. "Inspired" means that I did not make an exact copy of a East German field kitchen at scale 1:18 but that I followed the design in a general way.
The first picture show the main materials used: a wooden block (10 cm large, 5 cm wide and 4 cm high), parts of an old writer, plastic pieces normally used to line up ceramic tiles, wooden toy blocks and plastic blocks of some oriental game, three wheels of a 1:18 scale Maisto model of a Mercedes and part of a round wooden furniture handle (diameter ca. 4.2-4.5 cm). The first step is to saw the wooden toy blocks a little bit in order to create the impression of boxes with caps. Then a hole is drilled into the wooden block. Later the chimney will be put in. Then all the wooden and plastic blocks are glued as shown in the following pictures. Next step: Cut a piece of 50 cm from the plastic used for alignment of tiles. It will become the chassis. The piece has to be bowed in the middle and 11 cm from each end as shown in the following picture. That is being done with heat but after giving the new form each heated part has to be cooled in water in order to fix the new form. The "chassis" has to be glued at the main wooden box underneath the smaller boxes glued at the left and right sides. Put two smaller pieces on top as shown in the next pictures because these will hold the spare wheel. The bowed middle of the plastic chassis has to be cut a little bit. I also glued a small brass ring as shown in the picture. As rear door I used an old key tag but you also could use a piece of wood or any other piece of plastic that is a little bit smaller than 5 cm x 4 cm. I used a small screw as lock and glued two one centimeter long pieces of round wooden sticks as hinges. The next step was to glue s small piece of a writer at the front part of the chassis. Later it would hold the front support piece. I glued cardboard stripes on to of the boxes at the sides for purpose of a sturdier appearance. Two small sticks of wood were glued on the bottom in order to stabilize the axle. The have to be a little bit behind the middle of the big wooden block . Thus the mass center of the field kitchen will be in front of the axle. Now the bottom of the main wooden block has to be painted grey and all the remainder beige (or any other color you may chose). I used water-based acrylic paint. I also cut and painted two 1.5 cm wide pieces off cardboard you find used in rolls of kitchen tissue. These were chosen to be used as mudguards. Now the pieces to hold the axle are glued. I used two internal parts of old writers. Important: These pieces have to exceed the main wooden block by 0,5 cm in order to avoid friction between the wheels and the chassis. As axle I used a wooden barbeque stick. Finally I glued a piece of electric wire and a small toy wheel as support at the front part of the chassis. The cardboard rings I painted cut and glued as mudguards and the ends of two red caps of instant glue became rear lights. Now the field kitchen at scale 1:18 was ready. |

Most impressive. You have skills sir. To be able to see that pile of stuff and make what you did, is awesome. I didn't see that coming from the first photo.
