For purpose of this example I used a piece of styrofoam measuring 15 cm x 10 cm x 1 cm.
The first step consists in smoothing the surface with fine grained sand paper (180 grains per cm2) for purpose of erasing possible brilliant shining. Besides, the dust enters into the gaps between the styrofoam balls and thus reduces a little bit the appearance of that material. Second step: Wrap sand paper around a ruler and cut the horizontal gaps smoothly and without using much force. Do not forget the sides! The third step is much more difficult, because the vertical cuts have to show that the stones are interleaved. Instead of sand paper I used a hot nail. Fourth step: The stones are painted with a wide brush in order to avoid that the paint enters into the gaps. I used water based non-brilliant acrylic paint. Fifth step, after drying of the first paint: The whole piece is painted with dark grey acrylic ink diluted with water. In that way the white gaps between the stones become dark and whole wall looks old. In case you want to produce a new looking wall you simply have to invert the paintings: Apply first the diluted grey ink and then paint the stones red or orange. Nice work! Thanks for posting the tutorial. My wife has an electric styrofoam knife/cutter, that may speed the brick detailing up.

Wouldn't this cause an issue due to scale? Plus this foam is not as durable as the insulation foam sold at hardware stores.

I do not see the scale issue. The scale is determined by the one who crafts the wall by way of deciding on the distance of the gaps and therefore on the size of the bricks. Of course these walls are not too durable but normally I craft outfits for dioramas in accordance with the needs for one specific diorama. Upon taking down the diorama I throw things away if the are cheap. Anyway, thanks for the tip about the insulation foam. I will check that material.

I think the scale issue he may be referring to is that most bricks are uniform in size, and dimensions...? Brick Sizes To be correct in scale there'd be a math step involved somewhere to make the bricks 1:18 or whatever scale the diorama is going to be...? Some measuring&whatnot? I like the overall technique you used tho,and paint application...I can't say I've ever made a brick wall,so it's definitely better then the ones I've made
