A recent group project over at Joecustoms.com gave me the opportunity to make figures that I never thought I would tackle: The Sonic Fighters. The originals were a bit of a strange subset in the early '90s. They did not anything to tie them together except the large sound backpacks. In this project, I tried to re-invent them with modern parts as well as a common color scheme. Also, I structured the project around a made-up mission (that involves a new Cobra super weapon) to give these characters an ''excuse'' to work together in a squad.
Psyche Out Excerpt from Psyche Out’s after action report: Location: GI Joe Briefing Room, the Pit ‘’Dial-tone and I figured out a way to neutralize the Sonic Emitter’s waves. Shortly after we joined the mission to storm the fortress and take it out. Unfortunately, what we didn’t know was that Cobra had already tested it a few weeks before. It was a small town on the East Coast called Broca Beach. The people we found there, were… are completely despondent now… like their brains got erased.” Psyche Out was the first figure I thought of for this project. His character was always “out there” when it comes to military specialties. However, I didn’t want to simply re-do his V1 figure. It has been done quite a bit already, so I thought of his Sonic Fighters figure and that started this whole project for me. It snowballed from there. I took some liberties with the shade of blue for his uniform as I wanted to tie all my GI Joe Sonic Fighters together. Also, his colors make him fit into an urban setting as well. Dial-Tone Excerpt from Dialtone’s briefing Location: GI Joe Briefing Room, USS Flagg, somewhere in the Gulf of Mexico, September 30th 2230 hrs: “The Sonic Emitter creates energy waves that will allow Cobra to send out mind-control signals over large areas. It also allows Cobra to send out all types of psychic energy across a broad spectrum. When its beam is pointed at a wide area like a country, the citizens of that nation could be mind-controlled by Cobra. Fortunately, working with Psyche-Out, we have found a way to counter its effects. Dial-Tone was the second figure to be included in this project. After Psyche Out, I started mapping out the storyline and Dial-Tone seemed like a natural fit. I took some liberties with the shade of gray for his uniform as I wanted to tie all my GI Joe Sonic Fighters together. Also, his colors make him fit into an urban setting as well. Falcon Excerpt from Lt Falcon’s after action report: Location: GI Joe Briefing Room, the Pit: ‘’The intel guys didn’t tell us that Dr Brainwave found a way to miniaturize the Sonic Emitter and adapt it to Cobra vehicles and rifles. The focused beam is a tactical weapon. The sonic shock wave is strong enough to destroy vehicles and vaporize people. One of their Fangboats nailed us good. We didn’t lose anyone, but it will take a while to fix the gaping hole on the side of the Orca.” Once Psyche Out and Dial-Tone were locked and the storyline was developing, I started looking at the other Sonic Fighter figures that had been made and tried to find ways of fitting them into the project. Falcon was a no-brainer for the leader of the Joe strike team. I took some liberties with the shade of gray for his uniform as I wanted to tie all my GI Joe Sonic Fighters together. Also, his colors make him fit into an urban setting as well. Zap Excerpt from Zap’s after action report: Location: GI Joe Briefing Room, the Pit ‘’Hawk and Stalker wanted me along for heavy fire support. I brought along Romita, I hadn’t used her in the field for a while. She came in handy. Her double barrels took out two HISSes a few seconds after those Snakes blew up the Orca. I reloaded and took out the fortress doors. We started taking fire from a few Sonic Viper stragglers (…). ” Zap was the last Joe I settled on (before adding the Talking Battle Commanders). I wanted some heavy fire support for my Sonic Fighters team. I thought of Rock and Roll, but the colors were wrong for what I was trying to do. I always liked Zap as a character and once I found the simple recipe for parts, the colors fell into place. He stands out among the others, but still blends nicely because of the green.

As usual, very clean work! Great part choices on these, with the exception of Zap's head... I would prefer to see a removable helmet on him, like the original, but that is just my opinion. Otherwise, the figure is solid. Also, I like that you made the figures more uniform, so they actually look like the belong together as a team.

Nicely done, helps brings back memories of some of these figures, though I only owned Major Bludd and Road Pig before I sold them. Looking forward to seeing those next!

Very nice! If Hasbro made a subset as nice as yours, I'd be wanting it.
