Pardon my ignorance but I have been curious about this for a while and maybe one of you military buffs might know.
Did WW2 planes have machine guns on the nose in real life like you see in movies, toys and cartoons? And if so how did they not shoot their own propellers off? Where they synchronized somehow with the plane's engine?

Yes the German BF-109 had two machine guns mounted on the cowling on top of the engine. Different versions had a single cannon firing through a tube between the cylinder banks of the engine. And actually towards the end of the war Germany had moved the vast majority of there factories underground and they were actually mass producing more planes and tanks than at any point during the war.

They actually had a place inside a mountain where after assembling the planes they dragged them up the mountain on an elevator type thing to a run way on top of the mountain.

This is all very cool info guys! Wow! That interrupter gear is just incredible engineering. The level of thought for a mechanism like that is just genius. I truly believe we humans have always been smart and inventive tool makers, the only difference between us and people in past times is that each generation improves the tools of the previous one.

Thankfully for all of us the Me 262 came into operation very late and few in numbers in WWII. If that bird would have been operational in 1939 we would be speaking German today. Neither the P-40 or the P-51 Mustang were a match. In fact, in 1944 the Me 262 had no match. By the way great job on that P-40, it looks great. I just never liked that big gun underneath.
