i buy the 1/2 inch stuff. use a heat wand (saudering wand) and "carve' in brick and pattern detail. the foam is super easy to work and cut. I use hot glue, because i like to work fast.
i hand paint with acrylic, then mist black, white and gray. never blast the foam like you would a model car, foam likes mist coats. I use a low temp glue gun, works fast, if it's too hot it will melt the foam.

Also "cheap" dollar store foam-core is great for thin strips or walls. I use the "cheap" stuff because the paper just peels right off. With no paper, it's easy to cut, glue paint, and I built a freakin Star Destroyer playset with the stuff when I didn't know what I was doing. Great for light-piping (allowing internal lighting to show through cut-aways or tubes).

Thanks again for the tips and support, folks!
Today I took my daughter's Monster High Sweet 1600 Draculaura Roadster out for a shoot. If you squint and then get really drunk and then pass out or die, it's passable as a wildly stylized take on one of the Neutrino flying cars: To suggest the car is floating, I simply balanced it on this barrel accessory: If and when my daughter finalizes her long, drawn-out process of outgrowing Monster High, I might conduct some painting and weathering experiments on it to make it more viable. Had I read an essay like this yesterday I'd have dismissed it as click-bait trolling, but here we are.

Thank you, sir!

Now then: Quote:
So... much as I boldly predicted I'd hate the Bay TMNT movie and ended up loving it (here again is a link to my review: They're Not Taking This Seriously Enough!), and much as I became convinced, like so many HISS Tank haters, that the Technodrome forum was to be avoided just because its population includes a few jerks, only to post a truncated version of this thread at the Technodrome and receive many friendly, supportive replies, I dismissed the new Secret Sewer Lair playset and was then convinced by Pixel Dan that it is much better than I was giving it credit for. I'm gonna get it, photograph it in my default "sewer" setting (beneath the Perrine Bridge) and then maybe try to weather it and/or use its parts for my giant custom sewer. Meanwhile, I have many new portraits to share. First, McFarlane's Poacher as Doctor El: Mikey's new friend, McFarlane's Code Red: Here's an older Code Red portrait from before heymilt weathered the Turtles, and man does Donatello look weird and unfinished and wrong to me now: Two nearly identical portraits of Leonardo, both of which I felt compelled to keep because I am fascinated by how a slight tilt of the camera can leave a massive chunk of the backdrop obscured in shadow: Generic portraits: A new adversary in the form of Mandarin Spawn, who I may use as an evolved, power-up version of Shredder: Finally, the Nickelodeon LARP Turtles series brought us Donatello as a wizard and Michelangelo as an elf. And now: Last edited by Monte Williams; 09-07-2019 at 03:58 PM.. |

Sewer update: I went back to the thrift shop, and hit the jackpot!
First up, a few more ramps and some weird tiki mask thing, not particularly exciting but potentially useful: Next, a giant friggin' race track, also not exactly thrilling, and I probably would have opted not to spend five bucks on it if I'd had a clearer sense of what it was (it was all wrapped up in a baggie; I thought maybe there would be other parts besides the track, but no luck), but I might incorporate a few pieces into the sewer setup: And for one dollar, a new wing to add to Corduroy's dollhouse: (For those who've never seen him, Corduroy is my lazy kitbash of a Toyman-like serial killer.) I also scored a nearly complete Helm's Deep castle; I posted photos in my Geek Creek Kitbashes thread and the "Mixing GIJOE with toys from other lines / different scales" thread. More relevant to the sewer project is this goofy but charming Fisher Price tower: And best of all, for a whopping four dollars I nabbed all of the following (as well as the skate ramps and tiki item at the start of this post): Bigass skate pool! Mysterious Hot Wheels thing! It's about as random and nonsensical as can be, but the basketball hoop alone makes it worth the four dollars. Man... the scale of this thing is getting out of hand. Also, the more cool items I find, the steeper the burden of accountability; I kinda feel like I can't back out now. I just hope I don't screw it all up once I start trying to paint! Leonardo goes on a spirit quest.
Also: Update: In a 24-hour period that last photo demolished my previous Flickr record for most Favorites earned by a single photo... I'm a bit baffled, but not unpleasantly so! Last edited by Monte Williams; 09-07-2019 at 04:00 PM.. |
