P.S. Also as you mentioned, the spades would have to be utilized or the piece would rock over too much. It would be a nasty experience I wouldn't hang around to see. Last edited by 733; 05-01-2015 at 01:04 PM.. |

Well first off it would have to be loaded by hand because its a 175 MM self-propelled artillery piece. The shell is separate from the powder charge and primer, which depending on the distance you are shooting determines the powder charge (Charge 3, 4, 5, etc...). When the FDC (Fire Direction Control) gives commands for the guns to shoot, the gun whether self propelled or towed has to be stationary and sighted in for accurate fires. Unlike a tank which fires a self contained shell and is limited in range and by what they can actually see, artillery shoots much farther and usually at what someone else sees. Although gunners do practice direct shoots over their sights and our guns used to have a friendly competition at the end of a field exercise to see who was TOP GUN for the battery. Artillery is The King Of Battle! Go Red Legs!
P.S. Also as you mentioned, the spades would have to be utilized or the piece would rock over too much. It would be a nasty experience I wouldn't hang around to see.
