Hi Everyone,
I'm kind of new to posting at Hisstank.com. I'm a big fan of the ARAH line and often stop by for toys news and sometime lurk around the boards. LOL. I'm a digital artist and have made kits for Transformer-never for Joes. However, that recently changed. Inspired by some amazing CROSSOVER customs that made their way to the TFW boards, I wanted to do something similar and fun. Something that everyone could own and wouldn't require years of skill or tons of cash. And I really didn't want to model an existing Joe character in the standard scale. What would be the point-right? Well, a while back I came across a deluxe Fall of Cybertron Jazz figure and said hey, it looks like it could be an exosuit for a Modern Age G.I. Joe figure. I entertained the idea of fan favs like Duke, Flint or Scarlet, but decided to do something a bit different. Then I thought to myself, why not do an homage to a human character from the TF universe in Joe scale. I actually came really close to modeling Marissa Faireborn, a true crossover character. It would have been epic, the daughter of Flint and Lady Jaye in a futuristic Joe scale exosuit. YIKES!! But again, I decided against it, recalling the unhealthy hatred some hardcore fans have for her. Anyway, I ended up with the standard three, which I'm calling (Space Man, Space Woman and Space Boy). So basically, this fun little CROSSOVER kit is intended to give one the illusion of a G.I. Joe scale figure, fully encapsulated in a transformable exosuit. And like the concept, each character/head, can remain attached during transformation, albeit a tight fit. The dome can pivot in bot mode, able to reveal or conceal each character. However, the dome must be removed during transformation, but after which it can be stored in vehicle mode. Although, I printed the models in both Frosted Ultra Detail (FUD) and Full Color Sandstone(FCS)-with the FUD material yielding sharper results- these photos are of the colored FCS material, for ease of viewing. Due to the nature of this fully colored material (intended for figurines and not so much mechanical parts and accuracy) the sphere/ball joint at the base of each head had to be lightly sanded to obtain the same fit as the (FUD) material, in order to pop it in Jazz’s neck socket . Aside from this small step, the fully colored heads look good, and can possibly be a game changer for future models. Just thought I’d mention it, for those of you who are interested in the fully colored sandstone material. Intended to add playability to an already fun toy and be a small bridge between two awesome brands, I hope this kit is something both TF and G.I. Joe fans will enjoy. I am, curious what combination, of software you use? I use a little sketchup but want to learn more. Sketchup makes it hard to make organic things like heads and faces

What ever works actually. Good programs for organics are 3D Coat, Blender, Zbrush, Maya and 3D Studio Max. I "think" the first two are free to the public, to an extent, if memory serves me. However, with organic modeling you encounter issues like extremely high polygons. My models are generally 1 to 2 million polys and I've seen them as high as 10 million or more. I think Shapeways has issues supporting anything over 800K polys though, so you have to be aware of that when modeling. In contrast, Sketch up, Rhino, Solidworks are good for harder surfaces and mechanical parts. The latter two are used by Mattel and Hasbro respectively. In general, inorganic/hard surfaces, don't need really high polys to look good, so there's rarely an issue when printing them. However, if you want the best bang for your buck, meaning both organic and hard surfaces, with clean, manageable and relatively low poly counts, I'd go with Maya or 3D Studio Max. These are generally used in the Film and Video Game Industries and are the standard if you want to break in. I hope this helps. -Tecrom

I see, thanks a lot for the information man. That definitely helps. I am looking for maybe a software to design human action figures, maybe begin with head models that print into 1/18 scale
