Joecustoms.com’s eighth annual Custom Celebration starts today. Each year, Custom Celebration is two weeks filled with new customs, tricks and tips, contests and challenges. There is something for everyone from beginners to seasoned customizers. Everyone is welcome.
This year, to help celebrate the event, Bucky and I have made a series of customs. So, tune in each day for the next tow weeks for at least two new customs based on characters originally released during the infamous New Sculpt years. Check out the new reveals here or visit us at Joecustoms.com to partake in all kinds of custom goodness: JoeCustoms.com > View forum - Custom Celebration VIII Day 1: http://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-jo...ml#post4604416 Day 2: http://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-jo...ml#post4604415 Day 3: http://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-jo...ml#post4604414 Day 4: http://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-jo...ml#post4604412 Day 5: http://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-jo...ml#post4604411 Day 6: http://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-jo...ml#post4604410 Day 7: http://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-jo...ml#post4604409 Day 8: http://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-jo...ml#post4604408 Day 9: http://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-jo...ml#post4604407 Day 10: http://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-jo...ml#post4604406 Day 11: http://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-jo...ml#post4604405 Day 12: http://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-jo...ml#post4604404 Day 13: http://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-jo...ml#post4604403 Day 14: http://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-jo...ml#post4604402 Group Shots and Final Thoughts Bucky: ‘’This is the most amount of customs I have ever done at once, in this short of period of time. The project took around 4 months to complete, starting with brainstorming in late September. My basement was a complete and utter disaster for most of the time, though I now have systems in place to keep it better organized. I literally would have dreams about the project and sometimes couldn't sleep as I kept "kit bashing" in my head while trying to doze off. Some of my better ideas came up while trying to fall asleep. I wrapped up my end the day before a surgery that left me in crutches and a wheelchair for a month. I’m currently thinking of a way to top this.’’ Oreobuilder: ‘’When Bucky approached me in September with the idea of doing a New Sculpt Event, I took to the idea immediately. It was an idea that I had been kicking around for some time. However, I was not sure about the timing. I was one month into creating my 50th Anniversary Tribute and I was not sure where I would find the time to work on both projects. Fortunately, Bucky understood and we agreed on a February reveal. At the same time, thanks to Pluv and the Joecustoms staff, we decided to integrate our event with Customs Celebration VIII. Although the last 6 months have been insanely busy customs-wise, I’m really happy with how this project came out. I was afraid that by juggling both Project New Sculpt and the 50th Anniversary Tribute, one or both projects would suffer. However, I found that by doing both simultaneously, I could switch projects when I was losing steam on one. Since the two projects are set in different time periods and contain vastly different styles, looks and colors, it was always refreshing to move back and forth between the two. More importantly, working with a partner for the first time was a terrific experience. We could bounce ideas of each other, critique each other’s work and motivate the other to keep going. It was so much fun that we have already started brainstorming our next joint project!’’ Some WIPs: You can check out more WIPs at my blog or at Joecustoms. Day 14
Bucky ‘’Crosshair was on my list to make soon after I had made dart last summer. I began to put him together and shelved him in favor of other customs that I had going at the time, so when the project came about, I modified the wip I had had going and came up with a better recipe that what I had before, and he became one of the first I completed.’’ OB: ‘’The DTC line actually had two versions of Spirit. Both share the same construction. However, the black suited one from the comic pack has the superior color scheme in my opinion. This version is perfect for a tracker and my take on DTC Spirit will find a home with my Night Force figures.’’ Bucky: ‘’When I made the decision to do Scarlett, I knew I had to go get the black widow head. I thought the recipe I had was decent enough to be a great homage to the new sculpt version, and double as an "ultimate" version for my collection. I am not a fan of most of the heads that Hasbro has used for Scarlett in the past opulence of years, and really wanted to try something different. I'm very happy with how ol’ red turned out.’’ OB: ‘’Here he is, Joecustoms’ favorite unofficial bad boy mascot: Big Brawler. For my interpretation, I tried to actually make him into a genuine bad-a$$, not just a wannabe. I kept the tattoo from the base figure and went with the Tiger Force paint scheme. It seemed like the more interesting of the choices. I also changed the direction of the tiger stripes, so he would fit with the rest of the TF team.’’

Day 13
OB: ‘’I never had DTC Mutt, but this version always seemed like a younger version of the character. The face never had the lines of a grizzled experienced soldier. Still, it is an interesting take on the character. ‘’ OB: ‘’The DTC version of Salvo was a cool evolution of the character. It added some height to his build, gave us a cool removable helmet and introduced the Javelin portable missile launcher to the GI Joe universe. Unfortunately, the original figure also suffered from some proportion issues and was quite bow-legged.‘’ Bucky: ‘’I've always imagined Swamp Rat as an individual character and not a trooper, and the color scheme here is my favorite one he had back in that era. I had the top half pieced together very early on, the legs came at a much later time, as most legs made the figure look too lanky with that long skinny torso and arms from the retaliation Zartan. I finally chose the jungle viper legs. While not 100% accurate, they gave the bottom half the look I was aiming for. Bucky: ‘’When this Snake Eyes was released, it was THE snake eyes that everybody wanted and needed. It was an excellent figure, and is one of the few new sculpt era figures I still own. This custom hopefully does that version some justice. More or less a kitbash with some black paint, it reads the ninja/commando line rather well.’’

12: Cobra Troops Friday
Bucky: ''This version of the BAT was the first of two I did. He came together rather easily, and a lot of the modding was done during the Iowa convention Assembly Required, at or near the joecustoms booth. He ended up being a very close match to the original figure. It's a unique look for the BAT, and a pretty cool one at that.'' OB: ''The DTC SAW Viper has always been a favorite of mine. It improved on the 1989 version in every way – colors, articulation and accessories – so including him in this project was a no-brainer for me. In fact, SAW Viper was one of the first figures that were made. I like him quite a lot, I may go back and make more, possibly with other environment-specific color schemes.'' OB: ''Iron Grenadier was released in the Spytroops line in two color schemes – Black and gray. I chose to homage the black version as that color has always been associated with Destro’s army. Although it is not as accurate to the 2003 figure, I replaced the silver with gold to further strengthen the ties with the vintage Iron Grenadier.''

Day 11
Bucky: Towards the last couple of weeks I was making these, OB was just slaying me with the incredible WIPs he was sending me and ideas that he had. I was starting to lose steam, and I had kind of run out of ideas...and fodder! I sat down for a couple of nights and poured through Yojoe.com's archives trying to come up with ideas, and made some notes. Fodder was getting hard to come by, but by luck, I had a table set up at Assembly Required and was able to make a couple of rounds to the dealer tables and buy some stuff and start on it while I was there. Blowtorch is a retaliation Duke base with lower legs from retaliation zartan, both purchased from joeczar, Blowtorch and some others were started very sneakily at the Joecustoms booth. It's a very simple recipe and I love the way it turned out. OB: ‘’I made this custom with Python Patrol in mind. I always saw Spytroops Dr Mindbender as that sub-team’s version of the character. The black and red color scheme and the snake skin pattern on the pants certainly evoke the New Sculpt PP colors.’’ OB: ‘’Introduced in the Spytroops line, Red Spot was GI Joe’s third Laser trooper. The original had a cool look, but needed some adjustments for the proportions and the color was a little bland. This was a good opportunity to modernize the figure. The Retaliation GI Joe Trooper mold was a good base. I went back and forth on the helmet. The PoC Beachhead helmet may not be my final choice, but it works for now.’’

Day 10
Bucky: ‘’I wanted to do Beach for the project, he had a unique look with the large gloves and rolled up sleeves in that era, which I tried to duplicate here. It ends up being somewhat of an interpretation of the new sculpt version rather than a straight up redo of the new sculpt version.’’ Bucky: ‘’Dusty was a last minute entry to boost the ranks up on my end. The original recipe I had just didn't pan out, so in the end, he ended up as almost an lbc. I tried to change him up a little bit by adding the larger goggles, and used the new sculpt gear to tie him in with that era.’’ OB: ‘’Rollbar is another new character introduced during the New Sculpt years. He got a couple of figures during that time and he was always a bit non-descript. As strange as it sounds, that is what attracted me to making this custom. GI Joe has always had a few ‘’generic’’ looking soldiers – Grunt, Doc, Short Fuse, etc. Rollbar fits nicely into that group in my opinion. The Humvee is barely a custom as I did not make any mods to it structurally or paint-wise. The base vehicle is the PTE Humvee and I added the Joe stickers. ‘’

Day 9
Bucky: ‘’Blackout was one of the first I did, and if I remember right, may be the reason I started the project. I had received the club’s Blackout and was just so underwhelmed, I decided I could do better by just adding black paint to parts that looked like they would make a good figure. I had been looking into and had started creating several "new sculpt" figures (last year’s Dart for example), and Blackout was one of the first. As I soon discovered that I had a decent size project on my hands, I made the connection with Oreobuilder to see if he wanted to help me pull this together as a joint project. Blackout ended up being one of my favorites and after I wrapped him up the club’s version went to eBay, and the money from that went into more fodder for the project. While not an exact remake, I think he pulls off an instantly recognizable look. ‘’ OB: ‘’Coils were one of the new types of Cobra troops created during the New Sculpt run. Ironically, these ‘’High Speed Motorcycle Drivers’’ were never included with a motorcycle. To fix that, I made an updated version of the Venom Cycle for them to ride.’’ OB: ‘’The New Sculpt Era was good to Shipwreck. He had a number of figures during that stretch and most of them were very good. The figure included with Cobra Mountain was well proportioned, well articulated, had an interesting color pallet and included gear to disguise ol’ Shippy into Cobra Commander. What’s not to like?’’

Day 8:
OB: ‘’Med Alert was one of the new characters created in the DTC line. The original was an almost complete repaint of Hard Drive. He is sculpted with a bulky suit, lots of pockets and little details. For my custom, I picked 25th Barbecue as a base figure. The mold shares a lot of the sculpted details with the original Med Alert and he is already molded in dark orange, making this custom completely playable.’’ Bucky: ‘’Destro was a pain in my rear. I really wanted to do him, but the end result for me kind of fell short of what I had envisioned. The collar is from a POC Duke, the head is Crossbones. The design elements of the original would make for a great figure, which I tried to capture here.’’ OB: ‘’I always liked the concept of Cobra experimenting with clones and genetic manipulation. It fits with Cobra’s modus operandi. It is one of the reasons I like the Neo-Vipers. So in that frame of mind, I like the inclusion of Hannibal in the GI Joe mythos. The idea that Mindbender has spare clones of Serpentor locked up in a lab somewhere is very cool. For this custom, the skull head on the t-shirt is not as detailed as I would like. I may go back and change it for a transfer label sometime in the future.’’ Bucky: ‘’One of the last I did after scouring the Yojoe archives, I think he turned out o.k. Considering I had little to no fodder at this point, I had to try to be as creative as I could with him. The holsters attached to the vest are off a belt from the VvV Leatherneck. The shoulder pad is scrap from some webgear. I think he came out ok in the end. It is definitely a unique look for Duke.

Day 7: Sound Attack 8-Pack
Bucky: ‘’I started with Roadblock just because I thought it would be fun and off the wall to throw him in there. He didn't really fit the vibe, even though he came out in the same era, he had been ARAH construction. I started to think it could be a fun side project, so then I came up with Firefly and Storm Shadow, which were very simple kit bashes and required little paint. So then, (Long story lol) I came up with a recipe for Dial Tone. After that, I got stuck, and really didn't want to do the rest. I kept mentioning it to Oreobuilder, and he said he'd see what he could come up with, and sent me some WIPs of the rest that were awesome! The Fast Blast Viper inspired me to make my fast draw custom (JoeCustoms.com > View topic - Bucky's customs end of year poll) within a couple of days of seeing his WIP.’’ OB: ‘’The BJ’s Sound Attack 8-Pack exclusive was a weird duck when it was released. On the one hand, it gave collectors access to some cool molds (like Undertow, Fast Blast Viper and Firefly). On the other hand, the choice of accessories was, shall we say, lacking. For our customs, we tried to fix the problems in this set while accentuating what was cool about it. For Wetsuit and Undertow, I used modern diver parts and added the dive gear. This version of Wetsuit will now be added to my Night Force shelf. Fast Blast Viper is a bit of a re-imagining. I basically took the name and ran with it. The original did not have any special gear to make it ‘’Fast Blast’’. The Data Viper’s pack fills that void.’’

Day 6:
Bucky: ‘’I had Grunt ready to go fairly early on as well, and was trying to figure out how I could do the Battle Blitz tank up to make it not so funky looking. That proved impossible, so I started to look around for a substitute. The Avengers mini tank proved to be the best option, as it shares the three wheel design of the Battle Blitz. I'm not a big one for vehicle customs, so this was a risky one for me. I can still see some overspray on the tires, which bugs me. The stickers were added from various leftovers from vehicles over the last couple of years. Grunt's shirt is a dry transfer decal. Fast Track: this figure was a throw away figure for me, I kind of made him as a joke. I remember a lot of jokes back in the day on the forums about battle luge guy, so I threw him in there for a laugh. I have him a code name of Fast Track, made sure to add his scarf... Just a fun guy to include.’’ OB: I have always been a fan of Footloose. Growing up, his 1985 figure was one of my favorites. The DTC version is a bit of a mixed bag. On the one hand, the proportions are less than ideal with long legs and a short stubby torso and arms. However, he did include a fantastic modular M16/M209 rifle. This custom gave me the opportunity to improve the original’s failings while keeping the good. I still need to fix the non-matching skin tone issues and I will probably keep an eye out for a better head, but I’m pretty happy with the result.
