My finished Night Force Crazy Legs Custom.
This is the first painted figure custom I have ever done. I was always to scared before to try since I don't have budget to just wreck figures. I decided that I would document my process and turn it into a how-to for people that are totally new to painted customs. [Special thanks to Whargoul44, you rock!] I read the forums here for a couple weeks collecting tips and ideas etc and I have tried to explain those in my guide so someone starting out doesn't have to deep search to begin. Having said that, if you try this and like it there is a rabbit hole of techniques and info way beyond what I cover. I have been trying to figure out how to post all this content in a thread here but it just kept blowing up in the preview frames. So for now I set the page up on my scratchpad site. Update: I Figured out how to get the text and pictures into the posts but my formatting is toast and I can only have 20 pictures per post so the guide is split but at least it's on the tank now. The original scratch site version can still be found here. Please let me know what you think of my figure and the guide. TRAZZ'S NIGHT FORCE CRAZY LEGS CUSTOM - HOW TO GUIDE First Off I have to thank the customs threads at Hisstank and Whargoul44 for his awesome advice I wouldn't have been able to do this without his help and I wouldn't have even wanted to make this so bad if I hadn't been inspired by his kick ass Crazy Legs Custom. Staring at his custom made me fidgety waiting for Hasbro to put this guy out and gave me the courage to try my hand at this. My hope is that this guide gives those of you who haven't tried painting or are scared of it to give it a shot. Also this is my first ever painted figure custom so if I can do it, so can you! First you want a figure you don't care about screwing up to test on and comeon nobody likes Breaker.... To do this custom you are going to need
Place the figure into a dish of soapy water, I used regular dish soap. This gets the figure clean and besides look what a great time he's having! Dry the figure off thoroughly and no I'm not kidding I mistakenly didn't and when you start painting you'll notice the clumps immediately, good thing we have the dummy! Splay the figure in a way that the figure can lay down without the part your interested in painting touching the paper. It helps to keep the painted surfaces from contacting other surfaces. Practice painting. Check the consistency of the paint and get used to how much to use to cover a surface. Also practice on the joints as they present the biggest issues due to paint rub. I experimented with painting the knee joint and then moving the leg back and forth to learn how the paint rubs off. Same for the hip ball joint below. It's really easy to forget but whenever you are not actively using a brush try to wash it out and let it dry. If you are super busy and can't, at least put it in the water so that the paint doesn't dry in the bristles. Time to disassemble Crazy Legs for painting, If you haven't done this before keep reading, if you are comfortable disassembling scroll on down to paint. The head just pops off gently with a little pressure. The legs screws come out to remove the legs, I use a regular pocket knife for this and the whole disassembly it is really handy. You can get a tight leg apart without damage by inserting a thin blade and applying a little wedge pressure to the side. This has worked on every figure for me except POC action Snake Eyes that's a whole other issue I may cover eventually. While taking the legs apart be sure to watch for that little circle plate inside the leg joint. They have a tendency to fall out and get lost. I include another picture of it more closely later in this guide. The hands will come out by just pulling on them gently and giving a tug. To get the lower arms and the feet out you need to heat the plastic with a blow dryer for 30 seconds or so and then pull on them. The heat softens the plastic and makes it easy to pull out. See the next two pictures below for the respective detached parts. Continues 3 posts down Last edited by Trazz; 12-14-2013 at 03:06 PM.. Reason: importing guide from site to tank |

CONTINUED
All right, he's disassembled so let's paint him. I started with his leg pockets and his helmet since they were both the Tamiya green and I wanted to start with something easy. I used the tweezers on the knife to hold the pieces while I painted them lightly with the brush. One note that the Hobby Store manager brought up to me. Tamiya is supposed to be sprayed on with spray kit not painted on with a brush; so you need to paint lightly with it at first until you get used to the consistency. Having finished those it's time to move on to the gloves and the boots, repeat using the same green. For the lower legs I painted the trim at the bottom up to the start of his pant leg. If you screw up painting the narrow surface either take a wet paper towel and wipe it off, or if it's already dried just leave it and you can paint over it with the black when we get there. The backpack arms and legs are gettting the flat black. I painted around the red pockets on his lower arms leaving them to reflect his ARAH look. Also here you can see the leg disc I was talking about earlier try not to lose it. Making good progress! I painted the torso in one piece, you can take the torso appart using the torso cracking method but since I wasn't swapping upper arms I decided to just leave it as is. Also I painted the front of the backpack first and let that dry before painting the back surface.I also left the silver on the belt and hooks and such to give some detail to the figure. Once all this dries you can reverse the disassembly and start putting him back together. See the start of the legs below. Remember to put the disc back in when assembling the upper leg and be sure to slide the pockets back into place before closing the leg. Push the hands back into the lower arm sockets. Push the lower arms back into the upper arms and reclose the legs around the hip sockets. Reinsert the screws into the leg joints. Your custom is good to go! Congratulations, load up some weapons and start taking pictures it's the BEST part! Last edited by Trazz; 12-14-2013 at 02:19 AM.. |
