Dude, position it like this:
"I'm going to hollow out tiny GI Joe heads. I can either do it with an X-Acto blade and we can spend hours at the emergency room and pay the bills for that, or drop $50 or less on a rotary tool like a Dremel and at worst sand my finger so it's raw for a day." |

I recently bought a Dremel brand, but starting off, (getting my feet wet), I bought a small 60 pc "Rotary Tool Set" from Harbor Freight for about 8 bucks. Now mind you you can't push it hard, 'cause the motor will smoke, and you have to plug it into an electric outlet, but it's a great starter tool, and easy on the budget.
Once my wife saw how much some of my customs went for on the 'bay, she stopped complaining about how much my materials cost. It's funny how that works, lol!

If you are artistic, use the dremel to make her something, ie etch the mirror in your room. I bought tons of plastic and my wife shook her head until I used it, some super glue and the special tools i bought to rebuild the remote for the TV that the kids busted. Play the game man!

If no dremel is allowed for you, then the old fashion way (or at least I did it this way) was to carve it out, with scalpel blades. Long & dnagerous route (cut myself many atime) but you get a similar result. The dremel tho makes life so much easier & quicker.
Also as pointed out by others, great for odd jobs around the house. Master engraving if you get one, jewelry that`s engraved by YOU wins so many more browny points than store done ones.Plus you CAN have anything put on then ;) |

Dude talk her into the stylus. It is SAFE. If she cares about your hands and what wife wouldnt she will give in. My went out and bought me mine b/c I am a cheap bastard and refused at first. also buy a 10 vice at home depot. You can pop the chest EASY with one. Don't listen to the walnut or knife folks. That is dangerous. Wrap the dude in a paper towel vice him at the shoulder and they will pop the chest. BOOYAH!!!

If she scrapbooks, then I'm sure she understands the need to get the right tools for the job. My mother-in-law scrapbooks and it ain't cheap (or at least her version isn't).
20 bucks for a non-brand-name dremel-like tool is not that hefty for a tool that will not only get you customizing your joes, but can also be used for minor repairs around the house |
