This sort of helmet is called a Bascinet. The chainmail extending to protect the throat is called an Aventail.

It's called a "camail". The aventail is the leather strip which the camail attaches to.
Krexx... I'm diggin' the sculpt (that helmet was my suggestion to DW), but I need to point out one crucial thing. The point of the helmet should be swept towards the top/back of the head. Your visor would have one hell of a time raising against that more vertical front. Example... Look at that... I posted something. |

That's a very nice helmet. They are also known as "pig-faced bascinets." The visors typically opened horizontally rather than vertically (like opening a door). The hinge for the visor was also usually held together by a pin that could be easily removed so the visor could come off once the wearer was in close combat. The visor was meant to protect the wearer from missile fire, such as arrows and crossbow bolts that would be deflected off the pointed front while the wearer was charging on horseback. They restricted breathing and eyesight, however, hence the ability to remove them. After the battle they could be recovered or replaced by another visor. They were common during the period of the Hundred Years War (mid 14th-15th centuries).

Sweet Jeebus, all this huffing and puffing about a helmet.
For the record, I know exactly what it is and exactly what it's for because I wear one on the weekend, and I'm only here to tell you that it's a damn fine job and you do damn fine work. Well done!

Helmet looks great (so does the cat). I was wondering why there are a limited number of medieval style helmets. Hopefully we will see more.
Great job. |

Kind of pointless to do medieval helmets if there's nothing to put them on. Still, I'll find a use for this one. |

I love all the discussion about the history behind the helmet.
