EDIT 6/6/14, story finally written
Part 138: Enter Viper Kingdom For months, the snowy mountain passes between the vast badlands of Sector 858A and the rest of the Cobra Empire had been held by the Titan Division of the Iron Grenadiers Siberian Troopers. Their mission was to block all Cobra supply convoys headed for Prometheus, a refinery colony that was secretly Cobra Commander’s nuclear warhead manufacturing facility. Prometheus is currently under siege by the forces of the Empire of the Iron Grenadiers, and the traitor, her Majesty, the Baroness and her Cobra Immortals (Cobra faction fanatically loyal to the Baroness and the bloodline of Alexander the Great). King Mighty Destro and the Baroness have declared war on Cobra. Cobra has been desperately trying to break through the mountain blockade to rescue its encircled forces, the Royal Crimson Guard Dragoons who were defending Prometheus. The Titan Division, however, stood between them. The men and women of the Titan Division were no ordinary winter soldiers. These Siberian Troopers were recruited from the vast frozen tundra from the Empire of the Iron Grenadiers. They were no stranger to hardship in the inhospitable and desolate cold. They were widely regarded as the deadliest force of the Iron Grenadiers in the service of King Mighty Destro. Many thought of them as inhuman for their ability to survive in such extreme conditions. From their mountain stronghold, they thwarted every attempt by Cobra to break through their blockade and liberate Sector 858A. These Siberian Troopers were responsible for the deaths of countless Cobra soldiers. For over 2 months, Cobra made multiple attempts to probe their defenses. Each time was met with disaster. It seemed as though their legend was true, they were invincible in the snow. At least it would have been true if it were not for one brave Fang pilot who discovered a major enemy supply depot, and decimated it (see part 137: http://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-jo...lance858a.html). The days following that attack were filled with intercepted enemy communications calling for reinforcements and resupply. Unbeknownst to the Iron Grenadiers, Cobra Televipers had broken their communication codes and a weakness in the enemy’s defensive line was exposed. Once this weakness was discovered, it was thoroughly exploited. The Cobra Fangs pounced on the supply starved positions for weeks before Cobra ground forces poured through the break in the line. At the head of the advance was Cobra’s elite assault force. The Great Cobra Commander called into action the strength in his arm and the pride of his nation. He called into action, the King Cobra division of the VSS (Viper State Security). Shortly after Cobra conquered the world, the Viper Corp was divided into two branches, the Vipers Foreign Legion, and the Vipers State Security. The Foreign Legion’s mission was to secure the frontier and bring order to the Badlands. The VSS’s mission was to maintain order and provide security to the state. Over the years, the VSS’s strength and influence grew. Today, they not only oversee security within Cobra’s borders, they’ve become the main invasion and occupation force that was repeatedly called into action by every Cobra Commander to take office over the past 200 years. The King Cobra division was the elite strike force of the VSS. Although they were officially designated the moniker King Cobra, they quickly earned a nickname that would raise their status to that of legend. It was said that wherever the King Cobra division stood and on whichever battlefield they fought, the area could be considered sovereign Cobra territory because the King Cobra division never lost a battle. It was for that reason that they were unofficially called Viper Kingdom. And today, Viper Kingdom is crossing over the mountains and entering Sector 858A. The Cobra convoy of personnel carriers and supply trucks was making its way up the narrow pass through the snowy mountains of Sector 858A after intense fighting which finally forced the enemy to withdraw. As they made their way along the icy roads, a young sergeant finally allowed herself a moment of relaxation atop one of the transports. But to call it relaxation was a complete stretch of the imagination. Somehow though, after being put through so much hardship, soldiers manage to find rest even in the most extreme of circumstances. There was no room inside the troop transport so she had to sit on the roof and hold on to anything she could. She had the honor of being a Viper Kingdom Recon Scout so she was used to being alone. Recon scouts often ventured out alone for weeks well ahead of the advancing army. Their job was to stealthily scout ahead and take out high value targets or communicate enemy positions to waiting forces. Truth be told, she was used to being alone and hated the company of others. But in this bitter cold, she would have been willing to put up with just about anything to be warm. If she had known that the temperature would have dropped so much as they climbed in elevation, she would have crammed herself into that transport that was meant to carry 20 troops but in this case, had over 30. Somehow though, she managed to take her mind off the cold and hold on to the rails on the roof of the transport while it slowly waddled its way through the icy pass. As the transport’s engine roared up the mountain, it seemed to hit every ditch and boulder on the road which made for a constant jerking motion and a hell of a bumpy ride. But her exhaustion from all the recent fighting made the constant jerking atop the transport seem as if she was being rocked to sleep in a crib. She closed her eyes and lay back across the roof. In these rare moments between actual fighting, she enjoyed nothing more than clearing her mind. She drifted into a stupor and began to dream. She always had the same dream. It was always about her biggest regret. She thought of her baby and what Cobra did to it. Although she gave birth to her daughter years ago, she remembered and dreamed of the moment as though it was yesterday. Her pregnancy was an accident. She chose to deliver the baby, but give it up for adoption (in this day and age, natural pregnancy and birth is rare and there were those who eagerly paid a great sum of money for a chance to adopt a natural birth child). She remembered the immense pain of the delivery, her cries, her screams, the methodic breathing, and the exhaustion. After hours of labor dripping in sweat in a dimly lit room, right as she began to feel faint, the baby came and with great relief, she heard the cries of her child. It was a perfectly healthy baby girl. She wasn’t supposed to see her baby at all, but they made a mistake; the nurse handed the baby to her. She was still in a state of shock but when she looked into the eyes of her child, she was suddenly struck by a feeling unlike anything else. In the eyes of her child, she saw the eyes of all of her ancestors looking back at her. She saw all the stars and beauty of the universe on and on forever into infinity. She felt suddenly heartbroken and completely in love at the same time. All this, she found in the eyes of her child. It was in that moment that she just couldn’t hold it back any longer. She felt cold and alone all her life. As a soldier of Viper Kingdom, She was trained to be tough. She was taught that she had to be tough to survive in this world. But when she looked upon the face of her child for the first time, she just couldn’t hold it back any longer. Her eyes swelled with tears of joy as her emotions burst from deep within and she began sobbing uncontrollably while she held her screaming child close to her breast. It was her baby. Every ounce of her being screamed for her to protect her baby at all costs. And that’s when the nursing staff realized their mistake and took the baby away. She tried to fight them off but she was too exhausted from the birth. She was never given a chance to name it. An agent of the state then paid her for the child. When she awoke the next day, the baby was gone and it was too late to change her mind. The guilt she felt was crushing. It drove her mad and she was quickly dismissed from Viper Kingdom. She spent the next several years alone as a street rat. She traveled from town to town earning money as a mercenary. She tried to find her daughter, but records were nowhere to be found. It wasn’t until tensions between Cobra and the Iron Grenadiers escalated that Cobra agents found her. After all those years, they needed her to re-enlist due to the coming war. They knew something she didn’t. They knew she was no ordinary soldier. Sergeant Tabitha Tran, codenamed Vixen, the half Vietnamese, half French Viper Kingdom Recon Scout was considered one of the Souls of Chaos, soldiers with an almost supernatural talent for warfare (like Snake Eyes, Jinx, Storm Shadow, Zartan, Zarana). When they told her that she was ordered to report for duty, she laughed and told them they had 10 seconds to leave before she killed them. The Cobra Agents replied, “I wouldn’t do that if I were you.” She then immediately reached for her pistol and shot him in the leg. As the he fell to the ground screaming, she shot his partner in the leg. Before his partner hit the ground, she shot him again in the face. To say that she despised Cobra was a vast understatement. As she approached the first agent on the ground now writhing in pain, he screamed, “Stop! Please stop! If you fight for us, you can be with your daughter again!” That was 12 months ago and ever since she agreed to re-enlist with Viper Kingdom for a chance to be reunited with her daughter, all she could think of was her daughter. For this promise, she would be willing to single handedly kill all Iron Grenadiers. Her daughter should be about 6 years old by now. Just the thought of being with her again filled a void in her life that had been there since she gave her baby away. Even in the most terrible of conditions, thinking of her daughter would put a quiet smile on her face. Just as suddenly as she fell asleep, she was awakened. Her dream was interrupted by what has become one of the strangest traditions from this recent conflict. It was interrupted by the Viper Kingdom victory song. Every Cobra soldier knows that King Mighty Destro is a fanatic lover of classical music (see part 136: http://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-jo...lance858a.html). Destro despised any other kind of music, particularly, any genre of music to have come from the 20th and 21st century. He considered the music from that era part of the culture of a lessor people and banned that music from being played from within his borders. It was said that hearing just a small sample of this music irritated him to the point where he wanted to jump off a cliff. Viper Kingdom was more than happy to oblige by playing this music after every victory over the Iron Grenadiers. This accomplished several things; not only would it annoy Destro (if he was listening), taunt the Iron Grenadiers after every Cobra victory, and lift the spirits of Viper Kingdom, it also blanketed the battlefield with noise which helped confuse and disguise troop movement from enemy listening and surveillance drones. Although Cobra had banned music from this era as well (for other reasons), Viper Kingdom was always allowed to do whatever they pleased. This was also Viper Kingdom’s way of saying F U to Destro. F U for dragging them away from their families. F U for making their wives and husbands have to find ways to raise their children alone and cope without them. F U for taking them far away from their families. But most of all, F U for dragging them into yet another war so soon after they already kicked the Iron Grenadier’s @ss not long ago (reference to the Eastern Rebellion). So for all that, F U Destro, F U very much from Viper Kingdom. So as the column of transports, armor, anti aircraft gun platforms, and supply trucks slowly advanced up the narrow icy mountain passes, they broadcast on every channel, through a network of drones scattered all throughout the battlefield, the most irritating song they had on file: PLAY THIS SONG WHILE READING THE REST OF THE STORY As the music played, the troops inside the transport began hollering, laughing, and some even dancing despite the cramped space. Their spirits were heightened with this small celebration. She didn’t think they would not be in such high spirits if they could see what she was seeing at that moment. From atop the transport, she saw the results of the recent air strikes from the Cobra Fangs as they passed over the countless dead. There was wreckage still burning with intensity. She felt the warm glow from the fires as they passed by each wreckage. She saw wreckage after wreckage, body after body as they meandered along the mountain roads. She was in awe at the deadly precision of the rocket fire from the Cobra Fang squadrons. She saw the remains of anti-aircraft tank that had a perfect circular hole right through its front armor plate. The rocket must have hit at precisely the right angle to pierce straight through like that. She then noticed the turret of this tank 30 yards away, still whole. It was blown right off. There were bodies of Iron Grenadiers still smoldering while others were frozen in the snow. There were even bodies piled up alongside the road, each with an open gash on their helmets. These were executed soldiers. Viper Kingdom was Cobra’s spearhead unit for every attack. They advance ahead of the main VSS force and cannot take prisoners. She remembered that when his campaign began, they were told that they would be over the mountains and into Sector 858A within a week. They’ve been fighting for almost two months. They were told that the experts predicted a short winter and that the ice would melt soon allowing them easy passage through the mountains. Shortly thereafter, they’ve discovered that the most valuable piece of equipment in this campaign was the humble bulldozer with which to clear the snow from the roads that never melted as the experts predicted. They were told that the Titan Division of the Iron Grenadiers Siberian Troopers were half starved, blinded, deafened, dumb and would eagerly surrender as a result of the constant onslaught by the Cobra Fangs flying above them. The Siberian Troopers have not yielded an inch of ground without a fire fight since they started. But at this moment, none of that mattered. What truly mattered now, was that they were finally advancing. Moving forward, or up, or side to side, or even back. It didn’t matter what direction they moved. Anything was better than the stalemate that they faced over the last few months in these snowy mountains. The troops inside the transport clearly felt the same relief as their celebration became louder and louder. There was no point in trying to sleep now, no matter how exhausted she was, no matter how slow her heartbeat became, there will be no sleep to be had here. As the transports waddled higher into the mountains and the music and celebration became louder than ever, and they played a new song: Just then it began to snow. The snowflakes here were like nowhere else in the world. They were bigger and more intricate than she’d ever seen. She gawked upward and saw how the snowflakes were reflecting the fires below. She was mesmerized by this glowing amber colored blanket of snow slowly drifting down on her. And that’s when it happened. It came with a shrieking cry from a rocket and a booming explosion. At the head of the advancing column, a walking heavy mech tank was blown into the air and flipped upside down over the mountain cliff. This was followed by silver streaks from anti-armor rocket fire heading straight for the other transports. She saw as the rockets streaked towards them and into the unsuspecting transports ahead. These vehicles erupted in bursts of flames. And then she saw yet another rocket blast headed straight for her transport. Everything appeared as if it were in slow motion. There was no time to warn those inside. Tabitha leapt from the roof of her transport into a snowy embankment. She covered herself as best she could. The rocket slammed into her transport and the percussion from the blast crashed straight through her body as it sent the entire transport flying into the air and crashing back down again. It too burst into flames. She couldn’t imagine how, but some of the troops inside the transport survived the initial blast. She heard them screaming from within as they desperately tried to claw their way out. By now they realized that not all Siberian Troopers retreated. They sounded the alarm and troops from within the remaining transports began pouring out and taking up defensive positions along the roadside. There was sporadic gunfire all over. The Siberian Troopers were nowhere to be seen, but then, the Siberian Troopers launch static smoke bombs. The static smoke was designed to cloud all manner of detection, including infrared. This rendered the optics in her helmet useless and only meant one thing; these Siberian Troopers were low on ammunition and wanted to attack up close and personal. As the static smoke began to blanket them, the order from their captain was given, “attach bayonets!” This stuck fear into the hearts of every soldier. It was always unclear why soldiers seemed to fear bayonets more than bullets but the fact remained, they did. The idea of close quarters combat was distasteful to all, except for Tabitha. She seemed to excel in close quarters combat. As the surviving members of her squad lined up in defensive positions, she realized that the safest place to be was away from the others. She jumped up from the snowy embankment and raced uphill in the direction of where the rocket fire came from. Then, at that moment, they began to pour down from the mountain. Siberian Troopers rushed down towards the Vipers. The Viper Kingdom captain screamed, “Let them have it!” Every Viper in that defensive line began firing blindly into the fog of war. Gun shots rang all around her as Siberian Troopers rushed down passed her. She was suddenly in the middle of a most chaotic firefight she had ever been in. Although she couldn’t see them until they were within just a few feet of her, they couldn’t see her either, but she still had one advantage over them. She still had plenty of ammo. As she made her way up the mountain, she calmly shot one Siberian Trooper after another. She danced her way up the mountain, spinning, jumping, and twirling passed charging enemies. As they rushed by her, she surgically placed bullets into the backs of their heads. They didn’t expect their enemy to advance uphill. The Siberian Troopers never saw their deaths coming. They charged right passed her without taking notice only to receive a sudden journey into emptiness. She was almost too good at killing. The remaining Vipers were able to kill the rest. It was a massacre. This attack was nothing more than an act of desperation. These Siberian Troopers were on a suicide mission in hopes of stalling their advance. Finally, after so much bloodshed, she reached the peak of the mountain and found herself looking into the valley of Sector 858A. Still exhausted from the fighting, she looked back and saw the trail of dead in her wake as the static smoke began to clear. She wondered why they would so willingly surrender their lives for Destro. It was such a waste of life. As she peered forward into Sector 858A below, she was suddenly overwhelmed by an eerie suspicion. The inhospitable landscape of the badlands reminded her of the hardship of life in this cold dark world. She didn’t know how she knew, but somehow, a mother always knows. Even though she was determined to cling onto every spec of hope no matter what, and that she would keep killing Iron Grenadiers so long as there was a chance that she could be reunited with her daughter, she realized that no matter how many she killed, she could not shake this sneaking suspicion. For virtually no reason at all, she suspected that her daughter died years ago.

Great as always. You have a unique style, reminds me just a little of the strange Japanese amalgamation of WWII Germans, low fantasy/Hard ScI-Fi & "babes". It's like a wierd thing... it's a thing. I mean they sell highly detailed Panzer model kits with teddy bear faces and girly girl pilots... which isn't completely relevant to this but whatever.

Nice huntsman/trackers Lance. They look like they're ready to go out hunting animals or track down people. Oh they could be a frontier patrol or some form of police.

Absolutely awesome, Lance. You never cease to amaze me with your customs. The entire design of both is excellent and the paint apps are top-notch. Like Tankster mentioned, the weathering you do with your paint apps is phenomenal.
