I've been wanting to do this for awhile. I finally found a 30th anniversary box set reasonably priced online so I purchased it, then set up the cheesy style Wish Book diorama like the ones I drooled over for hours as a kid. I also faded the pictures to give them that old school catalog look.

Pretty cool. My brother and I used to create a desert landscape of our own using a sand colored velour blanket, throwing some things underneath to make hills. Then we'd set up the bivouac and the watch tower. Loads of fun! We would also set up our diorama outside... I can still remember digging a trench to make a river, filling it with rock on the bottom so that the water would stay there for a while. Filled it with the garden hose. Then people would walk by and laugh at us for playing GI JOE... And those people were told to get a life...
