The main reason I love making or felt the urge to make these playsets and especially my Spaceport playset was the complete lack of even half-ass decent playsets available for the 1:18th scale toy market. I've been collecting (or playing with) various 3.75" toylines since the mid to late 70's. I mean, I get why toy companies aren't exactly stumbling over themselves to push large playsets onto the store shelves with all the obvious costs involved like engineering, tooling, oil etc. And I understand (sorta) the marketing gamble of big box items squatting on shelves but I just really miss seeing true action environments at retail. Star Wars had some great ones but most of the big plastic items were the ships but Hasbro in the 80's, hands down the best, had all those great headquarters and terror dromes and platform and especially the Flagg which was just genius as ship AND playset. I always thought basic, generic non-toddler houses or buildings would have been a perfect option for the play of numerous lines of the same scale. I mean, when Joe collectors are resorting to using the Fisher Price Sesame Street playset just because it's a decent looking building almost to scale I'd think one of the big or even small toy companies would make something of some sort available. I will though give credit to Schleich for their few offerings and Playmobil is an amazingly well built toyline it's just unfortunately slightly under scale. |

As for paint I just use spray paint, typically a gray primer. I did have a guy that bought a set of 4 from me that wanted them all in a brown/red oxide color. I'll sometimes put a base coat of black primer and then spray over with a gray. After drying, I sand over the surfaces usually with 400 grit sandpaper. The black begins to show thru random edges giving different effects. Even though the blast edges look sharp and jagged they are actually fairly blunt. After sanding, all the surfaces are super smooth, almost slick. For the final detail, I do a wash and dry brush of a flat brown acrylic in all the crevices and along the corners. |
