Ever since I was a little kid, I enjoyed mixing and matching parts of GI Joe toys, often with excessive use of Testors model glue. I always wanted to try sticking a PACRAT flamethrower onto a VAMP (they had machine guns and missiles, why not a flamethrower?) but I didn't ever get around to it back in those days.
A couple weeks ago, and a few ebay purchases later, I've gotten around to it. Unfortunately, I don't have the patience or painting skills of some of the members here, but I think it turned out well enough for world-dominating-terror-organization's work. Sorry the camera works not great, it's a phone. (You should see the ones I didn't post, eww) For those interested in an "in world" description: The VAMP may be an older design, but it's a solid one. When the US authorized shipment of numerous units armed with water cannon to UN forces and friendly nations for riot dispersal, it was the perfect opportunity. Under the command of Firefly and Scrap Iron, Cobra forces hijacked the shipments and went about turning the vehicles to their own purposes. The water cannons were replaced with dual flamethrowers, the frame was reinforced, and grenade launchers were added, capable of firing smoke or tear gas for urban pacification. The Flamethrowers are brutally efficient for clearing buildings, both faster and requiring fewer troops than sending infantry door to door. The body has been layered with titanium infused Kevlar, resistant to temperatures exceeding those of the burning fuel. Similarly, all view ports have had high temperature bullet resistant glass installed, helping to protect the occupants from burning fuel, small arms fire, and allowing the interior to be sealed against chemical weapons, such as the smoke and gas grenades used if the vehicle is threatened by overwhelming infantry forces (or angry locals). The reinforced roll cage system provides additional protection for the flamethrower reserves and makes the vehicle nearly impervious to collision damage from anything short of a main battle tank. Even in the case of a rollover, the frame should remain sufficiently intact that getting the vehicle back on it's wheels should get it back to near full functionality. Those wheels by the way are formed from the same titanium infused Kevlar as the body, and have no inner tube to be damaged in combat or rough terrain. And when buildings are falling down around you, rough terrain can be as much a threat to mission success as enemy forces. That's where the reinforced independent hydraulics come into play, linked via computer into a "smart" terrain compensation system, this vehicle can climb over nearly anything it can't drive around or through. PARTS The core of this build is a 25th anniversary VAMP. I was going to use an original, but this thing is just built to be modded. Everything comes apart nice and easy, and more important, goes back again if necessary. There's obviously a slew of PACRAT Flamethrowers in the mix, both for the autoturret and on the fender mounted grenade launchers. The launcher barrels are just brass pipe from the hobby store. The roof & doors are from a Stinger, and most of the pipe bumper/roll cage is from that Captain America vehicle that came out a while back. Those were actually more of a pain to resize than I expected. The glass is all from a cassette tape door, cut to shape and then routered to snap into place on the doors and roof. The guard over the roof viewport is part of the gas can rack. The armored air intake/filter on the hood is just the side of a Target pill bottle cap. The primary paints are Krylon Colormaster Oil Rubbed Bronze and Oxford Blue (Satin). I know it's becoming popular to just do badguys in black, but the Cobra blue still matters to me, and this particular shade is subtle and dark enough that it seems reasonable for realistic purpose, while showing the Cobra roots. While I'm calling this done, I do have a pair of wheels that I'm pretty sure are from a Snow Cat, that fit. They're just a smidge larger, but look much more "beefy." If I run across another pair I'm going to switch them out. Last edited by Starhammer; 09-17-2013 at 11:18 PM.. |

I like it. And it might come in handy to keep those zombie vipers in-line.
