So...
Some friends and I play D20 Modern/Future, and we have a little "crew" of characters. I saw some of the custom jobs here on the site and I thought about doing some custom work. Problem is, I don't know how. I don't know where to start. Yes, I imagine there are "how to" threads on here, geared more toward people who have some idea how to do this. But I don't. For one character, I need an entirely new head sculpt. I can show anyone if they PM me about it, but I can tell it's going to require a razorblad, drilling tool, etc. So, where should I start? What tools do I need? Is there anyone willing to assist me via pointers? |

It was going to be either the D20 future characters, or maybe even some Ninja characters.
I thought maybe some people on the forum were into ninjas, so we could have a "make your own badass ninja dude" thing. After all, most of you are sick of the constant "ninjas" in the line, why not go all-out with them? |

Member "TheLongestDay" seems to be keen into ninjas. Check into some of his customs? Otherwise, man, you just have to sort of wing it. Haha. That's how I got into it.
Have some tools, the "basics" being brushes and paints, all sizes of screw drivers, pliers, clamps, tweezers, X-Actos, box cutters, knives, toothpicks, and whatever you can find helpful to shape/cut/scrape whatever. Then, you just need some plastic donors to start modifying. May not want to start out on the rarer/harder to acquire figures first. Then, just practice, and refer to the boards for ideas/help. FYI, for the life of me, I can't crack a torso successfully without destroying it, so I work around it as much as possible. Most Joe parts can be disassembled by pulling or using a screwdriver, but the arms/feet/hands you have to heat and pull, look up "boil and pop" and the other "sticky" threads at the top of the customs section of the forums. And good luck. Don't lose any fingers, and don't eat the paint. |

I think one of the easiest things you could do is find some images of what you want made and post them here. There are a lot of guys out there that are good and piecing up parts for customs... I'm sure with a pic of what you have in mind, within days people will have your customs mentally parted out for you, then you'll just have to track down the parts, lol.

I started by enhancing articulation... then I decided certain heads sucked so I would replace them... then I got into "this guy looks to bland.... Im gonna add some crap too him!" and now I am to the point were I say "Im bored and that character in that movie looks sweet, I am going to find the right parts and make him!" That said... get an xacto with extra blades, loctite super glue, and some Model Masters acryl paint/brushes.... you can go a long, long way with just that stuff. After that you will want a dremel, hot glue gun, green stuff sculpting putty, and more.
Also I live in Cartersville, if you want to get together to do some customizing PM me, I dont know how close you are but let me know!

Dave started a cool section here on diff things to get:
New to Customs pretty cool and has pics of some stuff cause when you're new to it, you wouldn't know Green stuff or Krylon paint if it was staring right back at you... lol.. hope that helps. |

OKay, here's my plans-
Marvel Universe: "What if Deadpool became Weapon X?" 1. "Creation of Weapon X"- Combination of Movie Deadpool and Weapon X Wolverine. Keeping Wolverine's claws, forearms, lower torso, legs. Using Deadpool's upper torso, upper arms, and head. 2. "Deadpool- Weapon X Merc"- Pretty simple, just doing a hand swap with Comic Deadpool and Wolverine. Paint scheme will most likely be a reverse-pattern of Deadpool's colors, or possibly a military color scheme (Olive Drab, Tan, and Black) 3. Deadpool- Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.- Just a color-over of Deadpool in SHIELD colors. ----------------------------------- "JOE" Customs- I'm really just interested in doing a few Ninjas at this point, with a fantasy theme. I've got an idea, but I'm waiting for more figs to come out so I can butcher them. ----------------------------------------- Star Wars- Hard to explain, but it's an old character I devised a while back. |

Hmmm...
Customising is all about two things... 1. A very clear idea about what you want to make (and think about it) 2. There's more then one way to swing a cat! The other tip (other than specifics detailed above) is to read everyone's threads and pic up tips. |
