It's hard to sell these as sheets because a lot of the difficulty lies in getting them applied. Because it's a home-ink-jet printing operation, the decals are fairly delicate.1

I'm interested in some more detailed info about your process...
What brand waterslide decals do you use? I'm mainly asking because I got some of the Testors Water Slide Decal paper to make my own decals and had pretty miserable results. You've obviously got your technique down pat so I was just wondering if you could elaborate a little in your processes. Quote:
What kind of printer do you print these onto?

Do you have any special settings when you go to print?

Do you use a post-app solution (Micro-Sol) to further set the decals/make them conform to uneven surfaces? Do you apply a protective coating (dull coat, etc.)?

Testors Decal Paper, same as you. It takes a bit of patience and trial-and-error to get everything right. I'll share my experiences so far. I have an inkjet--Canon MP480. I don't think it's anything fancy. Not everything prints well--occasionally some of the ink doesn't fully cover, especially when using the clear paper. I have to make sure there's plenty of ink and the cartridges are aligned. I use the normal paper setting as stated in the instructions for the paper. I think the photo paper setting can be problematic. I set print quality to high. The printer software has several photo and image enhancement options--the one I use is called "image optimizer," which smooths out some of the edges. Yes to both. Working with the decals can be frustrating, especially since they tend to stick to everything but the figure sometimes! Every so often I have to give up and start with a new one. The Micro Sol is great for getting out any bubbles and getting the decal to sit in the sculpted wrinkles and folds of the figures. I really need to try my hand at making my own decals again. The first time I tried to print some on my inkjet at home (a Kodak), the ink didn't adhere to the paper. I'll just blame the printer on that one. I'm hoping the trial and error process doesn't take to long or I might as well light my money on fire. Again, I really appreciate the time you took to answer my questions. Now if only I was as good at painting as you, I'd be set. |

Oh so that's the trick! I bought a piece of Decal Paper but it says that a LASER Printer is needed to print. That's why I didn't use it for my Michael Jordan custom... I will try this out. Thanks!

What about SURVIVAL for Outback? Or Right of Might for Salvo? Or the number 72 for The Fridge? Can you do those?
