He is a model circus builder and builds approximately 1/18 scale. He has a 50 foot locomotive that his 1940s circus loads up on and a couple of 5 ring circus tents which are roughly 6 foot by 4 foot when set up. Along with all the animals side shows. He is roughly 70 years old and still building. When he sets it up it literally takes all day. A few years back he ran out of stuff to build and started building a carnival. He now has a huge traveling carnival as well. about 30 rides including a ferris wheel and a double ferris wheel. He also worked at CAT (just in the factory not design) so he built several wooden scale models of just about every kind of dump truck and land mover you can imagine to have hauled on the train since the train would be hauling more then just a circus. Anyway my wife was well conditioned to toy collecting and building when I met her. I keep wanting to go visit him on a day it gets set up (which does not happen very often) and do a whole day of GI Joe dio shots. Here are a couple of pics of some of the stuff when he had it displayed at a local college. Just the tip of the iceberg though. Last edited by Dremel; 08-08-2013 at 04:58 PM.. |

My wife is pretty understanding about it. Her father has been a toy collector-creator-customizer her whole life. And even drug her to the equivalent of what would be a con for his collection.

Yes his stuff is impressive. Animals are customized toys but everything else is made out of wood. Hopefully I will have a huge album of pictures of Joes playing at the carnival to post.

That is awesome, I think that you are very lucky that it just runs in the family. In any case it would be a great idea to create a group that supports each other when it comes to having a normal life and being a collector/ customizer. I know that if I am not careful my hobbies would take away most my time and I would run the risk of neglecting the important people in my life, like my spouse. She understands that eventually I would like to take this hobby further and make it into an extra means of income one day. I am truly grateful for her support in that regard, I am fairly new to customizing in general so I am interested in hearing what some of you guys who have been in this for years have to say. Anyone else cares to share their experience?

Yeah if I had to work a real job I do not know how much time I would have but I have been a full time Ebay seller (deal primarily in vintage shoes and just in the last couple months started selling Joes as well) fo 9 years. My work week consists of cleaning shoes, listing shoes, shopping for shoes, and shipping. That part of my job only takes less then 20 hours a week so I have 20 hours of work time to buy, sort, list, and make joes and joe toys.
My shoe inventory is stored in a offsite warehouse. I think my finnished customs are going to get moved into that location as well. When the Ebay business took up half of the house (pre warehouse) my wife got kinda cranky about that. |
