I'm trying to make helmets for my pilots but I'm having trouble figuring out what plastic to use. I'd like the helmets to be the same type that was used on the Ace/Wild Bill helmets from the TrU set. I'm also thinking about using a more flexible plastic for the oxygen mask.

Hum, what do you mean?
You want/can cast your own helmets? Or you want to know if there's another figures that have similar gear of plastic? |

I have sculpts and silicone molds, but I want to know what plastic to use. Typically I've used Alumilite but it's too rigid for a helmet.
I've also started work on some custom body parts. Has anyone else cast torsos/arms/legs, and if so what plastic has worked the best for you? |

For the helmets, try smooth cast 327. It's a hard plastic, but if you mess with the mix ratio a little bit the helmets will have enough flex to go on and off easy.
For the body parts, you can do the same but tweak the mix a tad the other way. You can also try Task 4, as it is nice and hard but it's an ivory color plastic, not clear like this other one (which allows for easier color matching). You'll most likley need to use some Universal Mold Release (get the aeresol can) with both of these though depending on what silicone you made your molds out of. All of this is available from Smooth-On - Mold Making and Casting Materials for a World of Applications! . There are other plastics that are better suited for what you want, but both of these are easy to use and don't require pressure and heat to cure properly like the ones I use. |
