it's all about the threading. While I have very lightweight canvas for portraits, the threading makes it appear like really heavy burlap in 1/18th scale. It's great for belts but if you see my ninja with all fabric clothing, you may see how a heavy burlap wouldn't look right.
But I think I've found a solution. Looking at the material in question, it looks more like a linen and not a canvas. The term "micro-canvas" I believe is used to reference what the material is suppose to look like and not what it is. I took a cheap pillowcase cut a 8x8 square and duct taped it to a piece of masonite. I soaked it in hot water and dried it with a blow dryer to remove any wrinkles and tighten the threading. I then brushed a thin layer of gel medium over it and let that dry. It is almost as identical to the "micro canvas" in question. Some here have used a similar method with glue. This is thinner than any canvas and the threading is very close to the scale. I'm going to try this with a higher quality linen with a higher thread count I found but didn't buy today. The only problem is I need to find a way to keep the material from staining. It went from bright white to the canvas color when I applied the clear medium. My theory is it drew oil from the masonite. See I plan on doing some more ninjas in different colors and the great thing about using a white linen is I can dye specific colors beforehand. |

Hasbro needs to use some of that on their Joes, because the fabric they do use ends up looking like scale burlap sacks.
I take off any fabric and replace it if possible because it looks silly. |

Yah, i do that.
I choose a very thin fabric (or not, depending on what i need to do) and then soak it completely on vinylic glue. Then you can paint as much as you want, and even you can shape it before appliying the glue to get wrinkles. I've also cut to pieces an old military shirt i had, and put a LOT of glue on it. Since the thread runs in one direction, i can make belts that look like the plastic belts. (y'now, they have strips horizontally, or in some cases vertically) Also, after painting, you can add another layer of glue, to get the plastic look if you don't want the gear look out of place. |

This is what I've been able to do with a different fabric than micro canvas. While I was content with my Sideshow StormShadow, I didn't like the sound the figure made when I'd pose him. So I decided to work on a Ninja Viper that I would actually want.
This is using Navy Blue Kota Cotton with gloss medium. It was more of an experiment but I like the gloss because it sort or gives a Cobra it's scales. This is just a WIP. |

Great so far, tho i would try something different for the waist sash...have you tried that kind of tape that doesn't have glue? the one used to seal the intersections in pipes...dammit, what's the name?...amianto? |

yeah, I needed something to tie it and just had linen on hand. I'll look into that.
The kota cotton I got for 4 bucks a yard at Hobby Lobby, when it's been coated with a medium, it has a lot more flex than micro canvas, which is good for those tough spots. It's got a good thread count, which takes a little more care when cutting, and is pretty thin. |
