i discussed and documented most of the pre-build work in my long running thread about customs done with my kids.
I typically wait a week before reassembly but i just couldn't wait anymore and put this one back together a couple days early. this is complete except for stickers which i've already ordered from cobrasticker.com. i've always been interested in giving python patrol scheme a try as it's clearly one that requires some thought and care, atleast more so than my straight up repaints that i've done thus far. the inspiration finally came from my recent purchase of the target exclusive python patrol conquest x-30. while i was previously not very interested in this repaint of the classic joe plane, i was oddly impressed once i actually had it and got a chance to examine and play with it. the particular color tones mixed in on the conquest offered some nice layering to the overall look vs. a flat criss-cross pattern over a solid color. i immediately began digging through my box o extras and found a vamp near the top and jumped on that. i first took it all apart as is customary for me. with my sons help we gave nearly everything a base coat of kyrlon fusion satin burgandy. i then painted selective parts black and yellow. after a couple hours i began the tedious process of masking off the intricate grid that makes python patrol pattern. this took hours... i used tamiya mask tape which i cut into 1/8" strips. i got this measurement from the pp x-30. my son fell asleep before i finished. it took abotu another two hours to get the black and silver top coats on and then the rest was just finish detail work such as clear red paint on the headlight lens, brush guard lights. so without further rambling, here are some pictures

here are the tinted front headlights and colored brush guard lights
i'm leary in general about using yellow on anything so when it came to this i was hesitant to say the least. one of the common denominators among pp vehicles are yellow weapons. i felt i had not real choice in making an authentic python patrol vehicle than to paint the rear mounted gun yellow. to mask the fact that it's a rear deck mounted gun that is yellow, i added some back weathering to the barrels.

in these pictures you can see my inspiration and the end result of reproducing the layered look of the pp x-30.

Looks great arch! I remember you talking about trying a PP custom and it got me thinking about it too. I have so many customs in the works right now though it will be awhile before I get to it. Kind of a pain in the butt doing the pattern and masking them off? How many custom vehicles do you have now? It seems like you have at least one for every faction and I see new ones every day that you've done. Your Rattlers are my favorites still and I'm impressed with your custom vehicle armies, are you planning an invassion in the near future?

yes, my son helped with the base red paint work. the rest was above his skill level, and he was asleep. i finished 95% of all this in one day.
