or a heated needle, i did that already on some guns, i made straps out of black string from a craft shop, an layed em parallel to each other an rubber cemented em together, an then tucked em in the hole using the needle an a lil more rubber cement an then at the barrel i split the ends an wrapped em around the barrel, an rubber cemented the ends together again. it worked great an has the flexiblity of rubber, but it collects dust an crap. i was gonna coat it wit' some paint but never gotten around to doing so. an then seen slings from obi or deramo, an was like wow that's interesting. but dont know where to get the material from..

As opposed to a tiny drill bit!? Well, whatever works for you, I guess. Rexlace is good for some apps, imo, but it tends to be a tad thick for gun straps/slings. That's just me though, since I try to achieve a more accurate scale with my accessories.
Back to the coffee stirrer sword scabbard, here are 2 examples of mine made some time ago - The only problem with these, is finding stir straws that are small enough. Once flattened, the sword blade shouldn't be "swimming" inside. Also, if it is too big, the scabbard will look really weird anyway. Food for thought. |

I use to take these as a kid and make lightsabers from them. Cut the ball off the end, break away and smooth out the part that clicks to other legos, paint the handle black and your done. Fit was good too. I had tons of them. GI JEDIs |

I use a pinvise that I got from Hobby Town to drill my holes for my weapon slings. Use the flexrex, but it's a little too thick for some uses, so I also use thin nylon straps I get from GSTG, from when I did 1/6 customs.

Yeah, I love the coffee stirrers for scabbards. And you don't even have to paint them if you use black ones. Add a little green stuff on the ends and you'll have a perfect fit, too.
Here's the tutorial I did for making your own scabbards/sheaths/holders/slings/belts, now found in the Custom Tutorials sticky. I started out with rexlace, but I prefer flexrex for the straps (at least until I find something thinner and still flexible). They're both made by the same company, but the flexrex is a lot more flexible, although it does not take paint well. I'd get a small pinvise/drill for making the holes too, so much easier to do. I've been using vinyl tape (electrical tape), for gun slings. I've recently started experimenting with it, for holsters and working pouches. I still preffer thin black styrene for holsters and scabbards, but not everybody has access to a hobby shop that sells it. I haven't tried it, but I'd guess that the clear box windows from Joe vehicles and multipacks would work for that, too.
This sling is made from tape, and the harness it clips to is made from Craft Lace from wal-mart. It's not as nice as Rex Lace, but it's the only thing to be had, in this town. The hardware is made from thin silver wire, also found in wal-mart's craft section. |
