I've been inspired by all the amazing work I've seen in these pages to try and fill the gap Hasbro appears to be leaving in their 25th Anniversary line. Namely, Tanks.
I picked up a couple of BBI Tanks, the Bradley and the Abrams on clearance from Target and ordered decals with the intention of re-making them in the image of vintage GI Joe vehicles. Hopefully a fitting match to the new figures. My plan is to repaint the Bradley in Black and Red to match the classic Sears Crimson Attack Tank. The Abrams will be a MOBAT. I just haven't decided if I need to repaint it all green before applying the MOBAT decals. Last night I began the painting, and I have to admit that I was in a rush to get started before the rains come, and was excited to finally be getting somewhere. I'm afraid that my first spray painting pass left my Bradley blotchy in some places. I haven't spray painted anything since I was a kid. Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated. Pictures to come once I've gotten a bit further in the process. Thanks to everyone and all their great work for giving the idea in the first place.

start with the hard to reach areas. go with light coats to begin with. the idea being to ensure adequate coverage so as to avoid splotchy areas. then progressivly build up your layers till you have the desired finish. this equates to 3-4 coats for me.
i'm hooked on joe customs now so i'm eager to see what you do. that and i have yet to pick up a tank or anything other than the bradley/lav and i'm finding it harder and harder not to grab a tank and apache atleast. Last edited by arch2b; 01-04-2008 at 01:44 PM.. |

I appreciate the insight. Is there anything I can do for the blotchy mistakes I've already made? I've got plenty of paint, and plenty of time to get this right. I only need the patience.

Lightly wet-sand it? Works on actual cars, but I've never tried it on models.

patience is your friend but also the hardest thing for me to acheive anyway. i'll start a project and find it very difficult not to blast thru it. for example, i painted most of my bradley outdoors in the freezing cold while raining. i just didn't have the patience to wait a couple days as i wanted to see it done. that and i only had an x amount of vacation time at home to get it done over the holiday break.
becareful with any sanding as you don't want to remove surface detail with the paint. i've never tried thinner but it's a good suggestion. what paint are you using? |

I'm using the Krylon for plastics. I'm only on my first coat, but it looked really good in some places. It's the few wet-looking places I was concerned about. When I'm done with the Black, I'll go back with some crimson model paint for the canons, wheels, and back hatch like the CAT.
If this works, then I'll consider painting the Abrams, although it looks darn good already in the camoflauge. I might just apply the Mobat stickers and be done with it.

if it makes you feel any better, my camo bradley will just be getting sticker applications as a joe vehicle. while being a joe vehicle, dedication to the 25th line level of detail seems to fit with the more accurate paint jobs done on some of the vehicles. atleast thats the approach i'm taking. it seems your going more vintage which i like as well. there are a couple vintage camo joe vehicles and the mobat was released in camo once so you have precedent on your side

That's exactly what I was thinkin'. ;)
Once the decals arrive, my only problem will be waiting for a 25th Steeler to drive it. I hate the idea of having this beautifully designed tank, and no Tank Commander to drive it. Right now I've got Stalker and Roadblack at the controls, but RB looks HUGE.
