Didn't someone once post on here a method for 'painting' figures by soaking them in RIT dye? I think some acetone was involved?

I can't speak to the action figure aspect of using RIT for customs, which might make my comment off-topic, but I do know that the product doesn't work very well on clothing. It ends up washing out of clothes after several visits to the asian cleaners.

get a pot. bring some water to a simmer. add the dye. separate all the pieces (take out screws). get some sort of strainer or something to grab the pieces. throw the pieces in. bring water to a low heat boil. watch the pieces, check em every few minutes to avoid warping. that is the basic method.
it is great for nailing a base color for your troops, like black or green. then painting in the details really adds visual impressiveness.

Ask Jfak at Trigate, I know he did a tute awhile back, you also should get a strainer thingie so the figs don't touch the pot and make sure the boiling water is boiling hot, not just warmish hot, especially if you do black, or it'll turn purple, lol

There's a good tutorial over on the joecustoms customizing guide. It's actually in the painting section of the wiki. Although, it's pretty much what ecsmith7 said, just longer and with pics.

Crap, too bad. The item I had in mind is too big for me to fit in a pot - over two feet in diameter. I'll have to think about this.

I tried the Rit method before. I have so-so success. The plastic bits colored fine. It was those rubbery bits on the 25th figures that didn't take the dye well at all.
