If you can keep it all in one piece for painting, go for it. But if you have to remove a part to paint a different color, take that part off first. You don't want to have to paint two different things sitting on top of one another if you don't have too.
As for paint, any acrylic paint will do, and Wal-Mart has some cheap stuff. |

ok personally i would take the guy a part. an make sure you wash it an let it dry, an keep a cup of water at hand, an paint fast, cus acrylic dries fast. an constanly dip the brush in water dont mash the brush on the bottom of the cup you will ruin the brush especially on the type of brush you are using. mash it on the side of the cup. dont mash it but you know. an make sure you do the trimming of the joints using a dremel an a dentist bit. here, this will explain the bit. Custom Action Figure Guides and Tutorials by Jin Saotome! .. an take your time but move fast cus the paint dries fast an you wanna spread it out evenly an thin through out. dont let sit an puddle up. you will show your inexperience in painting. i hope this helps you, its hard for me to explain over the net. in person i would show you what to do an what not to do!

but testors mm are pre thinned ready to air brush out the jar. although you do get some thick ones, stirring is a great thing, make sure you stir the shit out of the paint every so often. get all the bonding properties an tint all mixed well before any brsh dipping, another tip get a eye dropper an take out lil bit of paint at a time, an get a carasell paint dish to work out of. leavin the jar open as you work will gum up the paint in the jar an get boogers! use quality brushes an paint as well. dont go gettin some cheap brushes cus you got 5 in a pack for 3 bux comapred to one brush for 6. get the 6 dollar one. an take care of the brushes.

Every time I tried doing a custom figure, it never works like I want it to...
I've done about 5 figures so far. I'm not good at them yet, but I try. Now vehicles, I got that done! ;)

well i paint for a living so its second nature for me, i only did a few customs, but they came out incredible. you would think i painted toys for years. but it boils down to me knowing how to paint. you have to feel confident prior to tryin ti think. an im a perfectionist so i strive for perfection an wont settle for nothin less. but after time you can only get better man. just keep doin it. you will get the hang of things, the brushes matter too. there are million styles. try to stay away from any bigger ones, i use a loew-cornell 7000 round for most of my shit. i have others but this lil guy is awesome. it cost me round 5 bux i think. just dont give up man. keep swingin dont let it get you down. just keep swingin' eventually you will conquer! an victory will be yours!
