I was wondering what the prescribed method for applying clear coat is on a custom'd figure. I've used it in a spray can before, and it worked semi-well; there wasn't as even of a coat as I would have liked, but otherwise it worked well for the figure. I tried to apply by brush on an aborted figure, and it seemed to smear the paint (that had been applied several months ago). Is there another way to use a brush and keep this from happening? Any advice would be appreciated.

Its pretty easy when you get the hang of it. Hold the can about 8 to 10 inches away from your work, and then use a side to side sweeping motion giving it a light misting. It may take a coat or two before you cover everything eveny, but it works.
As far as using a brush, not likely gonna happen beacuse the acrylic paint. Due to the different ingredients of the acrylic paints, and dull/semi gloss coating, using a brush will almost always smear the work. |

I was applying semi gloss this weekend and ran into the paint smearing problem as well. Any recommendations on what brand of spray to use?

I use either Testors Dull coat, or Krylon Matte Finish. It is cheaper to go with Krylon. Its like $2.97 at Wal Mart for a regular sized can compared to the $4.00 little can from Testors. Results from both are identical.
As far as smearing... you have to let it completely dry before touching or handling. Could be up to an hour, but I usually handle them after about 20 minutes or so. It may be dry to the touch, but that doesnt mean that it has completely cured. You still have to be cautious that you don't apply any pressure on the finish or it will smear, or you'll leave imposed fingerprints because the paint hasn't adheared to the plastic. Krylon also has a gloss and semi gloss finish as well. Last edited by Marine_Deadpool; 01-26-2009 at 03:16 PM.. |

I used to spray the Krylon sealer in a baggie and then go out back behind the barn and huff it...
I mean, I'd spray it in a baggie and then use a brush to paint it on some of the trouble spots(shoulders, elbows, crotches, knees).. worked out real well on some, but you have to make sure the paint is try for sure, like 2 days old dry, lol |
