Part 136 – Fire Upon Prometheus:
Ludwig van Beethoven, a historical figure desperately admired by King Mighty Destro. As the Absolute Ruler of the Empire of the Iron Grenadiers, Destro’s upbringing was one of supreme privilege. He benefitted from having the finest tutors in all manner of education: military strategy and tactics, engineering, science, math, the arts, and music. Above all else, he was one of the very few in the world with knowledge of the true history of the mankind. After Cobra conquered the world nearly 200 years ago, they rewrote history. Today’s population has virtually no real knowledge of how the world was before Cobra’s domination with the exception of one thing, music. Throughout mankind’s history and across all cultures, human beings had at least one thing in common. Every culture created music. Among the different forms of music, there were perhaps just a handful of examples that remained timeless. Since its creation, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 was universally regarded as the greatest piece of music ever written. It was timeless. Despite a world that had tried to destroy itself several times in the name of those who sought to rule it, Symphony No. 9 survived. It survived throughout the centuries, through famine, world wars, and the nuclear holocaust in which Cobra had nearly wiped out humanity. It eventually found its way to a young King Mighty Destro decades ago. He never fully understood why he was always nearly brought to tears every time he heard the mesmerizing melodies through the masterful composition of Symphony No 9. Destro thought that his deep feelings for this music stemmed from the fact that Beethoven himself was nearly deaf and dying while obsessively composing such a spellbinding masterpiece with Death at his doorstep. Destro admired the neurotic determination in which Beethoven desperately struggled to complete his gift to the world before it was too late. Destro imagined Beethoven in his decrepit state of health feverishly writing notes on every scrap of paper he could find all while knowing that Death was close behind him. Destro imagined the long arm and boney fingers of Death reaching across the candle lit room to tap Beethoven on his shoulder. He imagined that Beethoven would simply scoff at Death and bark, “My genius is not yet complete!” The hand then cowardly retreated back into the darkness from whence it came. Death would have to wait. Today, Destro is said to be old and sickly and he too desperately wanted to achieve his plans with Death waiting at his own doorstep. He was on his way to the bridge of the mightiest Airship ever constructed, the IGS (Iron Grenadiers Ship) Bahamut. He considered the IGS Bahamut his own masterpiece. But this masterpiece brought with it a different kind of gift to the world. It promised oblivion to the enemies of the Iron Grenadiers. The IGS Bahamut was intended to be the weapon to end all wars. It was the largest airship in the world by far, nearly one third larger than the second largest ship in existence, the HMS Alexander, her Majesty, the Baroness’s own gleaming white flagship of the Cobra Immortals. After signing a secret pact with her Majesty, the Baroness and the Cobra Immortals, both ships were now side by side at 10,000 ft. and headed directly at Prometheus, Cobra Commander’s secret nuclear warhead manufacturing facility that was disguised as a refinery colony. Both the Baroness and Destro declared war on Cobra. The Admiral of the IGS Bahamut was notified that King Mighty Destro was entering the bridge. The Admiral had the honor of announcing the King, “His Majesty, King Mighty Destro!” he proclaimed. A sudden silence fell upon them. All radio chatter was quickly turned off. All officers looked towards the main entrance to the bridge. Most of these men and women had never seen Destro in person so their hearts sank deep into their chests for they knew they would soon be in the presence of royalty. From the darkness of the hallway they heard his slow, heavy, and patient footsteps. They heard the ceremonial metals on his chest clink together as he stepped. They heard his jewel encrusted sabre drag along the steel floor. They expected to see a man of great stature who towered above everything around him. But when he finally emerged through the doorway, he was hunched over and decrepit. Destro appeared weak and frail. He quickly sat in his command seat in the center of the bridge. King Mighty Destro (in his youthful days) shown below: From his seat, he took a slow deep breath. The officers hoped to hear a rousing speech from him before their ensuing assault on Prometheus. Instead, their system broadcasted a prerecorded message. Nevertheless, all eyes were fixed upon him. When the speech ended, the Admiral gave the order to raise the ships signal flags. The blue and gold peacetime flag was taken down from the ship’s bow and in its place the Imperial Iron Grenadiers red and gold war flag was raised. King Mighty Destro slowly stretched his neck upward to peer out the main windows. He then silently nodded his head in approval before it gently fell back into the command seat from exhaustion. The radio chatter on the bridge came on again. The massive guns of the IGS Bahamut arched upward piercing through the white clouds streaking by at 10,000 ft. They would soon be in firing range. All gun positions gave their ready status. The Admiral stood by the King’s side and informed his Majesty that all systems were ready and the might of the entire Imperial Iron Grenadiers forces were awaiting his command. The Iron Grenadier forces shown below: But to the Admiral’s surprise, King Mighty Destro slouched silently. His eyes were glazed over in a joyless stupor. He then raised his finger and signaled to a caretaker by his side. His Majesty whispered into the caretaker’s ear. The caretaker then told the Admiral to play this song on the bridge as a personal request of his Majesty. PLAY THIS SONG WHILE READING THE REST OF THE STORY: When the music played, King Mighty Destro managed a quiet smile. How he loved Beethoven’s ability to build up and bring out his own raw emotions. He loved how there was always the silence before the storm. But most of all, he loved the climax before the explosive drums. The officers on the bridge watched as Destro began to wave an imaginary baton as if he were conducting the symphony himself. The Admiral began to doubt if the King’s presence did any good for the men’s morale. He began to fear that it was actually damaging. In fact, he began to wonder if King Mighty Destro had completely lost his mind. And when the symphony drums thundered, King Mighty Destro peered into the Admiral’s eyes, raised his frail hand and pointed forward to signal the attack. The Admiral took a deep breathe, and ordered, “All guns, fire upon Prometheus!” The Admiral then turned to Destro, saluted his King and exclaimed, “All hail Mighty Destro!” This was followed by every officer on the bridge. In unison they shouted, “All hail Mighty Destro!” With thunderous ferocity, the massive rail guns of the great ship IGS Bahamut suddenly came to life. This was soon followed by the HMS Alexander. Enormous blasts of fire erupted from the guns. The fire balls from the Bahamut towered over the massive ship casting bright violent flashes and shadows over the bridge. The shock rippled through the hull. The entire ship jolted backwards as its great engines whirled at full power just to keep the ship as stable as possible. King Mighty Destro laughed maniacally as volley after volley of shells ripped through the air, across the sky towards the heads of his enemies. This was his masterpiece. This was the moment he patiently waited for. The Bahamut was his weapon of vengeance. It was over a decade ago, when a young Captain of the Royal Crimson Guard had humiliated him in a conflict now referred to as the Eastern Rebellion. That Captain was now a rising star among Cobra’s ranks. He was now Field Marshall Collin O’hara. He was now in charge of all Cobra forces in the defense of Prometheus which meant that he was now cowering in his headquarters somewhere deep underground in Prometheus. Destro rejoiced as he imagined the Field Marshall trembling in fear as massive shells from the Bahamut and the Alexander were streaking towards him. Field Marshal Collin O’hara, codename The Matador, shown below: From Prometheus, all Cobra forces were on high alert. The Royal Crimson Guard Dragoons were hastily gathering their last minute supplies and rushing them to storage in one of Prometheus’s cavernous underground facilities. They were all ordered into their bomb shelters. Since the betrayal of the Baroness and the Cobra Immortals, Field Marshall O’hara knew they would not stand a chance in an all-out battle against the firepower of the IGS Bahamut combined with the HMS Alexander. The Royal Crimson Guard Dragoons shown below: So he ordered his forces deep underground and to gather what supplies and ammunition they can with them. His strategy was now to allow the two air battle cruisers closer so the ground guns hidden throughout Prometheus could be in an effective range. He planned to lure them in and cause as much damage to the ships as possible before forcing a ground war. He could only hope that the hidden guns placed throughout Prometheus could survive the onslaught from the two airships. His only real hope was to hold out long enough for the Great Cobra Commander’s Viper Corps. to break through the mountain pass blockade held by the Imperial Iron Grenadiers Siberian Troopers and come to their aid. Imperial Iron Grenadiers Siberian Troopers shown below: Major Natasha Belov, codename The Rain Spider, was overseeing the last minute evacuation of their above ground outposts. She called out to her men to immediately get to their bomb shelters. She saw the panic in them. They were still unaware that the Baroness and the Cobra Immortals had betrayed them. But her main concern for now was the safety of her troops. Major Natasha Belov, codename The Rain Spider, shown below: By now, most of the civilians had been evacuated but many refused to leave as they had nowhere else to go. Beyond Prometheus was the Badlands of Sector 858A, a vast barren wasteland controlled by bandits, outlaws, and rebels. Thanks to Cobra’s propaganda machine which painted the rebels as savages, the civilians preferred death to what they feared the rebels would do to them. The Rain Spider watched as a nearby civilian, an elderly woman, panicked at the sound of the bomb sirens. This was a sound they’ve all become familiar with, but this time, the civilians saw the troops panic and scatter. They knew that this was not a drill and that destruction would soon be upon them. As the troopers hastily gathered what they could, some food supplies were left unguarded. Starvation had been a scourge of Prometheus ever since the Imperial Iron Grenadiers Siberian Troopers held the mountain passes and blocked all incoming supply convoys months ago. At first, the civilians were able to live off of rats and pigeons. But now, there wasn’t a single vermin in sight. It was as if they were warned that King Mighty Destro was coming and abandoned Prometheus before it was too late. So in her desperation, knowing that her punishment would be death, the elderly woman snatched as many food rations as her frail arms could carry and ran for shelter. A nearby trooper saw her. He chased after her. Natasha ordered him to forget the woman and let her have those desperately needed rations. Natasha chased after them while screaming at the trooper to get to his transport. She screamed, “Leave her be! Forget her! That’s an order!” But that’s when the first shells landed. Natasha heard the unmistakable sound of an incoming shell. It sounded like satin sheets being torn apart. The sound became louder and louder. From her training, she instinctively knew that because she heard the shell coming, it was not dropping directly over her. She knew that because of the way sound waves rippled from a shell piercing through the air, that you only heard the sound from shells that land away from you. She knew that you never heard a sound from a shell that’s dropping directly over you. The screaming sound became louder and louder until it suddenly impacted nearby. The explosion blew her off her feet. She was blown 20 yards down the debris littered street. She was momentarily shocked but managed to keep her wits about her. She somehow immediately scrabbled to her feet. She saw the trooper on the ground wrestling the elderly woman. They too must have been knocked over by the blast. The trooper grabbed the food rations away from the woman. As the elderly woman begged him for mercy, he struck her across the face. Natasha was sickened by the sight. The trooper rushed back towards her. She reached for her pistol. She had it in her mind to execute the trooper for disobeying orders. But she realized that they were in need of every abled man and woman to defend Prometheus against the greater evil of King Mighty Destro. So together, they rushed for the nearest transport headed for their bomb shelter. They ran as fast as they could with massive explosions impacting all around them. The explosions produced terrifying flashes like thunder and lightning. Together, they dodged all manner of falling debris for the iron and stone buildings and structures of Prometheus. The explosions were so deafening that she couldn’t even hear her own breath as she gasped for air. Towers of flame and Earth exploded skyward all around them. The trooper was ahead of her as they both ran with nothing but survival in mind. Suddenly, a shell impacted in front of that trooper as he charged ahead. Natasha saw as the trooper’s body from waist down suddenly disappeared. The explosion ripped him in half. What remained of him was thrown forward to the ground. She eventually made it into a nearby bomb shelter, but the last she saw him, he was somehow still conscience on the ground. Without realizing what had just happened to him, the trooper was still clutching onto his precious food rations as he slowly faded from existence. From the open fields just outside of Prometheus, the Flying Wolves of Dog Company of the 66th Iron Grenadiers T.A.R.G.A.T.S. carried on their mission to wipe out the rebels. Captain Renalda Spears, a.k.a. Captain Ren, codename Hell Sprite, took a brief moment to look upon the devastation of Prometheus with pride. Her master, King Mighty Destro has finally made his presence known. Captain Renalda Spears, a.k.a. Captain Ren, codename Hell Sprite shown below: She immediately radioed to her forces, “Rally on my position!” They regrouped from their attack on the Rebel Angel’s encampment outside of Prometheus. When Dog Company gathered around her she proclaimed, “This is our day of glory! King Mighty Destro is here and he will wipe our enemies from the face of the Earth!” The Flying Wolves cheered. Captain Ren went on, “Today will be remembered as the day that our righteous might triumphs over evil. No longer will Cobra seize every morsel of land that is suitable for agriculture! No longer will we be forced to farm on toxic soil. No longer will we have to worry about our children and the future generations! No longer will Cobra keep us from our birthright! Today is the day that we take back what is rightfully ours! Today, we take back all of Sector 858A!” The Flying Wolves erupted in cheers. Captain Ren continued, “Each of you made a blood oath to King Mighty Destro! We will return to our grateful father victorious, or dead!” The Flying Wolves exuberance could not be contained. The let out roars of enthusiasm. In unison, they then all recited the Royal Oath of Loyalty, “For the Grateful Father and his glorious struggle, honor in blood, and the Iron Grenadiers! All hail Mighty Destro!” With that, Captain Ren ordered her men to attack the Rebel Angels and their newly found allies GI Joe. . From a faraway field, a lone Iron Grenadier sniper, Brae Allaway, codename The Baobhan Sith (pronounced baa'-van shee) watched the action unfold through her riffle scope. She saw the Flying Wolves encircle the Rebel Angels from the air as massive explosions tore apart Prometheus in the background. Brae Allaway, codename The Baobhan Sith shown below: She watched as the Flying Wolves deployed their tactics. They flew in groups at different heights above in alternating counter-circular patterns. It was a carefully coordinated maneuver to confuse the enemy. From the ground, it looked as if the T.A.R.G.A.T.s where attacking in a chaotic manner. But because of their alternating flight directions, there was nowhere to hide for attackers who came from all directions. But Brae never fired a shot while watching her comrades in battle. Brae had a different mission. She watched patiently for her target to reveal himself. She was waiting for the most important target of all. She was waiting to kill General Hawk, the highest ranking officer to betray the Empire of the Iron Grenadiers. There were others too watching from afar. The mercenaries Zartan and baby his sister Zarana had front row seats to the end of the world. They rejoiced in the chaos for where there was chaos, there was profit to be made from human misery. The mercenaries Zartan and baby his sister Zarana shown below: Back aboard the IGS Bahamut, after the first rounds of artillery fire, the mighty airship readied itself for the next round. The Admiral, still fearful of King Mighty Destro’s seemingly insane behavior, stood proudly as his ship successfully fired the first shots in their declaration of war. The Admiral looked to Destro for his approval. Destro was completely still in his command seat. This was somewhat expected given his Majesty’s age and fragile health. But something was different. The Admiral cautiously approached Destro. He waived his hand in front of Destro. There was no response. The Admiral thought, perhaps his Majesty had fallen asleep. His boney finger tapped Destro on the shoulder. Still, there was no response. What the Admiral realized next horrified him. King Mighty Destro had passed away during the excitement of the attack. The Admiral’s spirit sank deep into the basement of his soul. The Admiral realized that they had been led to war by a mad man only to find themselves without a leader. What was worse was that the Great Cobra Commander’s revenge will know no bounds. He could only pray that the Iron Grenadiers Storm Troopers could quickly finish the ground war before their forces realize that they had lost King Mighty Destro. End of Chapter Two. The Iron Grenadiers Storm Troopers shown below:

Haven't been keeping up with the story, but always make time to check out your figures, as they are some of my favorites to look at... A great combination of historical period uniforms and modern warfare types, making for unique and inspiring custom pieces. Thanks for sharing them with us!

Man can't wait to see who pops up in chapter 3. And vehicles or bots. I'm at the point where I'm not sure if I'm anticipating more story or more customs, just keep them both going.
